13:02 - Regarding NL's reasoning, I decided to go full Type A viewer, and posted this in a response to another comment as well. Let's try to solve this quantitatively. Double check me to make sure I don't make any mistakes. The multiplier value from copying Gros Michel is (30 • X) + (Y • X), where X is the multiplier from obelisk and Y is whatever multiplier value you get from the hand (hand type, mult cards, suit triggers, etc) prior to moving on to triggering the jokers. The multiplier value of copying Obelisk on the left is (Y • X²) + (15 • X). You're copying Gros Michel one less time, and it only receives the multiplier value from your Obelisk Copy, not the original. On the other hand, your mult prior to jokers triggering is now multiplied by both, so you get an X² multiplier on Y. To find the break even point, we set these equal to one another and solve for Y. This will tell us at what value our mult prior to joker triggers has to be for it to equal the value of copying Gros Michel. YX + 30X = YX² + 15X Y + 30 = YX + 15 YX - Y = 15 Because the square of X is involved here, it means the breakeven value is going to change depending on the value of X. Setting X equal to a series of values provides a series of "isomult" curves which should give the breakeven value for a given Obelisk magnitude. If Obelisk's multiplier was a continuous variable, these would describe a smooth surface of point payouts for any given Obelisk value, but the payout is actually a discrete variable so it's a discontinuous series of "ridges." If you were to plot these, you would find a progressively lower Y breakeven as the value of X goes up and the square of X has a larger impact on the initial Y multiplier. Let's look at this for the first hand played at 14:54 . The Obelisk multiplier is at 3.2 here so we have: 3.2Y - Y = 15 2.2Y = 15 Y = 6.81818181 (repeating, of course :P) So, your initial mult only has to be roughly 7 for copying Obelisk to be a better idea than Gros Michel. On that hand of two jacks, one of which was a mult card club suit, the initial multiplier from the hand prior to jokers is 9. So in that instance, NL would have been better copying Obelisk over Gros Michel. That's not an especially strong hand, so I would imagine in most instances, except maybe playing a single pair with only 1 or 0 clubs and no other effects, it is probably preferable to copy Obelisk. Any hand with at least a couple clubs in the score is going to outperform with Obelisk. It's even easier to see if we set the Obelisk value to, say, 4. You only need a Y of 5 to break even. At an X of 5, you only need a Y of 4. Given the low margin that NL lost that run by at the end, I suspect copying Obelisk would have saved that run for him. But this is part of why Balatro is such a fun game!

13:40 I think this is actually a misplay in this situation. Because he has the club joker which adds mult as the cards are scored which means he'll usually have enough initial mult for a 3x on the left to be worth more than a +15

Im not sure NL reads these comments anymore, but regarding brainstorm with obelisk, yes you want the multiplier at the end, but brainstorm would work as obelisk, thus you would still multiply it at the end, but you would multiply the multiple. Not trying to be a type B chatter, just hoping to clarify something you might have missed!

Brainstorm would go last and it should be higher since you're multiplying at the beginning and end. Works best with glass cards and planet cards adding mult before the jokers hit

After playing a few rounds, the full game seems a lot more harder and the Jokers are very very varied, getting big boy mults early is getting hard for my bland flush playstyle.
