Why would it be more valuable than the opinion of thousands and thousands of critics and directors, from Scorsese to Ebert, from Spielberg to Siskel, from Forman to Angelopoulos, from Mann to Pollack, who had cited, countless time, CK as the greatest film ever made? AFI's list was an example of a list based on a known criteria, again I'm not bashing on you or your list whom i really like, I'm just trying to show you how every major list in the movie business is made. Have a nice day :)

Excellent suggestions, I'm watching a few of them right now, thank you. When making this list, I have tried to include as many directors as possible and to not give any director too many entries (Hitchcock is the most represented with 6 films) so i left out many great movies by guys like Kubrick, Bergman, Eisenstein, Buñuel...in order to include other filmmakers.

Clerks I think may be deserving, not just because it's my favorite movie, but because I think it was a big milestone in indie filmmaking, especially considering the attention it got, the box office numbers, and its praise and influence it has come to attain. Gave credence to the anyone-can-do-it concept. And it's hilarious. Scream I mention, if at least for being partly responsible for resurrecting horror as a box office powerhouse to this day. And did I not see Halloween? Wtf?

I have seen 96 out of the top 100. So yeah, it's a good list. My only complaint would be the films aren't obscure enough. You only give the two or three most well-known from each director. Just because other people consider them to be the best you don't have to. For example, only Tokyo Story is in the list, the only 'famous' Ozu film. Why not mix it up and put Tokyo Twilight, or The Only Son? Kurosawa has done way more than 5 films, yet you put his five most known. Why not High and Low, The Hidden Fortress, Kagemusha. He has done 30 films, not five. Woody Allen's two most known films are Annie Hall and Manhattan. I think 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' and 'Love and Death' are better. But overall, a good list. check out mine :) (you can't honestly say you enjoyed Birth of a Nation. The film is one of the worst ways to spend 3 hours, even if it is 'historical')

Actually ignore that comment, I just realised it was based on Cinematic influence, initial popularity etc, not your opinion lol.

You have just answered yourself: the fact that you like 2001 doesn't make it a great movie, and the fact that I hate it doesn't make it terrible. What makes it great is the acclaim the influence and the impact it had on many filmmakers over more than 44 years of cinema. The perception of art and what makes something great varies from one person to another, but one can safely say that "Kane" is the greatest movie ever BASED on influence, impact and acclaim. The criteria determines the list, not me.

Nice list. good to see a truly broad appreciation of cinema. 'One flew over the cookoo's nest' should be higher up though.

Good work i like the list :) However, there are some great movies that are not shown on your list for the moment i have two for the moment: "Apocalypse Now" of Marlon Brando and "la vie est belle" de Roberto Begnini. thank you for sharing this great list with people :)

Man, I really wish I could appreciate films as critics do. I feel like to understand their importance, influence and originality I'd have to see most movies that came out prior to any given movie....Anyway....LENIN like a beast. No communist, but still...Dramatized Lenin like a beast. LIAM NEESON (I'm writing as I go). I've seen so few of these.

Wasn't that the music from Gallipoli? (Tomaso Albinoni - Adagio in G Minor). Which isn't on the list. Unless I missed it. And it could have been used elsewhere of course. Great movie, though.

Although I know extremely less about film than you, I have a few suggestions: Suspiria was a notable omission for me. That got under my skin, with the coloring and the Goblin soundtrack and all, the italian horror schtick. Frankenstein (or bride) is always on these lists, was a tad surprised it wasnt here.

@MrMusiclists

hi CinemaCinemaFilm I have a couple of remarks for you: IMO Dekalog shouldn't be on your list since it was made for TV, some classics (Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain....) are way too low or should be added, some directors are featured a lot, your top 10 has two movies by the same director and two parts of the same movie....other than that, your list looks very good.

I realize these lists are subjective. But I would put "The Graduate" in the top ten.

"Singin'" is objectively not a bad movie because "bad" is subjective. According to the AFI 100 Years...100 Movies (an entirely objective list by the way) it's the 5th greatest American movie of all-time, it has appeared twice and as high as 4 on Sight and Sound's list of the ten best films of all time, It has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, It was also among the first 25 films chosen for the National Film Registry by the US Library of Congress ...how about that for "objectively bad movie" ;)

"Apocalypse Now" is number 26.

Good. And if this list is not just of American films, too two 1950's films, Two Women (Italy) and Le Ballon Rouge (French). Also, Lili was great--Abstract Expressionist innovative in phantasmagoric fantasy scenes, as at end of giant puppets pursuing Lili; and uniquely poignant story of characters trapped in pathos (innocent and not) struggling to rise.

I thought the top ten was flawless. I bit curious that titanic and Lord of the Rings weren't on the list seeing as one of your categories was awards and recognition. Although seeing as some of those films haven't had enough time to have a "lasting popularity" perhaps you could make a list of top 100 since 1980. That would be great!

One flew over the cukoos nest outside of your top 100? I'd put in my 20, let alone 100. Same with shawshank Edit: I don't want that to be too negative, I thought overall it was a good list, just some things I'd put in very different spots

hi again, Your list is subjective, mine has a criteria, I've tried to make it as objective as humanly possible and, unlike yours, it doesn't reflect my own taste in any way :I don't like 2001 or Singin' or Belle de Jour and I really don't have to, but i understand their greatness and the way they shaped cinema .As as result, a lot of my all-time favs aren't even on this list. IMO It'll be just a waste of time and bandwith to post a list of personal favorites without any criteria to back it up.

Again...."better", "100 greater", "greatest film ever made", "directed perfectly" "my list is 1000 greatest, better than AFI" (whatever that means) are subjective views, they represent YOUR taste, why would they matter, even if you're the greatest, most knowledgeable movie buff to ever walk the planet, it's still your view, the view of one person, why would it matter that much?

The Thing maybe...top 150, objectively, even as a fan, is questionable. The masterpiece that is......Rubber. Dont think I saw A Clockwork Orange. Toy Story I think is a definite one that should be there, too. I....think Im done.

Nice try. Absolutely vulgar and silly. Citizen Kane is an artificial movie. It's a tour de force but it's surely not art. And no room for The Emigrants or The New Land or Black Robe? And so top heavy with English language films.
