The 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor Chronicles - The Steering Gear
In this video I swap out the old original steering gear, for a new, exact match, year specific steering gear. This is an installment to the 1997 CVPI Chronicles.
As part of an ongoing "project gone south, deep rabbit hole style" I'm taking care of a much needed Steering Gear Replacement. While this steering gear might look like a normal steering gear, it turns out that THIS steering gear is unique to the 1997 Interceptor. Apparently it has the strongest internal tortion bar of all of that vintage. I acquired this steering gear from a Genuine Ford Parts store in Virginia, on my way back to Massachusetts From South Carolina. Even though it was pricey, it was only 1 of a dozen or so left in the country, so I drove a bit out of the way to get it, due to the seriousness of this steering issue. This gear , unfortunately was mistakenly blamed for the steering problem that turned out to be the intermediate shaft (a different video in this playlist, when released)

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actrons, DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

The idea of turning a 5 year old 10mm bolt that isn't "rust-tited" solid, just tickles me! The Salt Belt really is a different world when it comes to whether bolts come out, or normally just break off...

Never realized the steering shafts could be so troublesome, was going crazy with wheel not returning to center drifting everything was leading me toward the ball joints. After watching your other video replacing the steering shaft, I pulled mine out and yes frozen solid. So, thank you for these videos they are very helpful and do entertain especially the bloopers...

Every experience is a learning experience. I can do the same thing 10 times... and there will ALWAYS be something different or something I didn't expect. (Murphy's Law has reserved time, just for me...)

Toyota Corolla videos were fun . I watch utube as you know to fix mine. Just changed transmission fluid with pan gasket and filter. Because at first i was rushing and only drained and refilled the fluid . And then those little ten millimeters bolts were lose so i start tightening those . And the tranny started leaking quick. But i had the gasket and the filter and initially was planning to change those but didn't. So lesson learned. But now tranny is solid and no leaks. Fun project because the before owner added a sealant to the pan gasket and i had to scrape that off. He did the same sealant on the valve cover gasket, WHY ??? So disappointed. But that's why we fix those the right way ! Thank you 😊!
