Orthotics, or shoe inserts, as some call them can mean the difference in playing tennis pain free and suffering out on the court so when buying over the counter orthotics for tennis you want to make you get a pair of inserts that fit well, are durable, and actually serve a function in your tennis shoes
Of course custom orthotics, custom insoles for tennis are always going to be better if they are well made and accurately casted/scanned but for most tennis players an over the counter orthotic serves the same purpose.
So today we are looking at my 5 best orthotics for tennis that are available over the counter (otc) for tennis and how each one of them can help your game and prevent foot issues on the tennis court.
Just because a company labels an orthotic as a sports orthotic or sport insole doesn't mean it will perform optimally and this video aims to debunk some myths about over the counter orthotic technology and marketing
I also give you some criteria for tennis shoe insoles (tennis shoe orthotics) so when you are thinking what orthotics to buy for tennis you have some ideas as to what features the inserts must have to earn your purchase.

Hey, Doc! Great channel. A lot of useful info for tennis players. More than 10 years ago I had a terrible case of plantar fasciitis and started experimenting with different insoles. Ended up totally curing myself using SOLE heat-moldable insoles, adidas Barricade shoes and over the counter non inflammatory pills from Europe. Was very surprised that you never mentioned SOLE brand of insoles. Now I’m on much lighter over the counter insoles in every shoe I wear, Adidas ubersonic 3 for tennis and no pills at all. Thanks a lot for your channel again.

I've worn Sof Sole Athlete Insoles for a while now (I replace original insole with these), and I've always loved the cushioning they provide. What difference should I expect if I move over to something like the Powerstep Pinnacle or Propet Pro? When people use orthotics do they normally have to size up to accommodate the room that they take? Since the Sof Sole Athletes are thicker than normal insoles the shoe gets a little tighter for sure. I have a neutral foot but do have some sort of ongoing injury in big toe/ball of foot on one foot, and occasional knee pain. Thanks for the great videos.
@FootDoctorZach
@FootDoctorZach 3 года назад
Glad you enjoy them 👍You shouldn’t have to size up the shoe but in terms of switching if you decide to switch to something like powerstep they’ll be a tad more rigid which just translates to longer break in
@webstermiller7765
@webstermiller7765 Год назад
I can't thank you enough for recommending of the Powerstep Pinnacle. I experience met pain along with a bit of hammer toe on my 2nd toe of my right foot. My podiatrist had me in the Spenco Total Support Max for the past year which has definitely helped. However, I saw your video and figured I should give the Powerstep at try. As you state in the video, the arch support is broad and wide on the Powerstep; a good deal more so than the Spenco. When I first put my foot into my shoe with the Powerstep I could feel a LOT more support towards the front of the arch; at first I was a bit concerned that it might be too much. That fear was erased after the first time I played it in. It has been an absolute game changer for my met pain; I now experience ZERO met pain during or after playing for hours. I'm guessing that longer arch support is taking quite a load off the 2nd met head. I've tried all sorts of inserts, with and without met pads, as well as adding Pedag met pads to others and the Powerstep Pinnacle has been the best solution for me by far. I know Powerstep makes a version with a built in met pad but just the regular version has solved my issue.

Let me start with saying I love Zach's content. As anything, one size does NOT fit all, however, so please do test for yourself what works for you. The Powerstep insoles caused major heel and hip pain for me. Switched back to different insoles and voila, pain be gone. Rackets, strings, shoes, insoles... gotta try 'em, and evaluate what works for you. Always appreciate Foot Doctor's narrowing the choices for us, though, that's for sure. Thanks, doc! (More on the Powerstep - they're SUPER wide - so much so that after 3 weeks in my Asics Court FF 2's, you can see major creases in the sides. Compare them to any other well-known-brand insoles (think SuperFeet or Sole), you can tell how wide these are. Sooo, if you've got wide feet, especially the heel, then go for it. Otherwise, I'd say test cautiously before you commit.)

Hi Doc, is there anything you could recommend to help with plantar fasciitis other than using an insole?
@FootDoctorZach
@FootDoctorZach 3 года назад
In general the most effective treatment for plantar fasciitis is stretching, but you should be evaluated just to make sure that you in fact have plantar fasciitis as a lot of things masquerade as it- in terms of shoes I like the SoleCourt boost, GP turbo, and a NEW pair of babolat jet Mach 2- there are other treatments for plantar fasciitis such as injections, anti inflammatory meds, cryo therapy but those are dependent on a solid diagnosis of plantar fasciitis

I have the Vapor X and love the low to the ground, lightweight feel which goes well with my predominantly serve volley game. The issue I have with the Vapor X is the overpronation, would any of these orthotics help with correcting that? Or alternatively should I just look for another shoe?

My physio said I am pronating my feet which is one of the possible causes why I hurt the outside muscle around my knees and quads. She recommended the pink superfeet because it has a high arch. Also, when I play tennis all of my tennis shoes outsole wear out the same way. Too portion is completely gone especially too left near inside of my foot. Thoughts on the pink superfeet? Wearing it on my right foot was really hard on my foot so I replaced it. I wear a Nike Vapour X knit version. Love this page btw - my only youtube subscription!
@FootDoctorZach
@FootDoctorZach 3 года назад
Thank you that really means a lot! For your foot type the vapor x / x knit is probably not great it doesn’t resist excessive pronation very well- if you pronate to the degree that you are wearing out that area of your shoe you need to probably be in custom orthotics with an EXTRINSIC heel post ( your foot doctor will know what that is) as far as shoes your should be in the Asics court ff, Asics gel resolution 8, adidas solecourt boost( best one for flat feet and over pronation) and if you want to wear Nike, the vapor cage 4’s ( although those would be last on my list) - as far as over the counter orthotics maybe try the powerstep pinnacle max- it has an extrinsic post on it but to be honest if i were your doctor I’d tell you to go custom with a deep heel cup and extrinsic post in the heel - hope that helps!

The Tennis Pro Doc wow! Thanks so much. My autocorrect replaced the word “top” into “too”. I meant to say the top portion is completely gone, especially top insides of my shoes. I hope you get sponsorship so you can review more shoes 😄

I dont like heat moldable inserts just because they lose so much strength so fast because of the exothermic way they mold to your foot- id rather have something less contoured and more supportive, but thats just me

I am a 64-year old intermediate tennis player battling plantar fasciitis. I have been trying a variety of aggressively shaped, rigid insoles (Natural Feet, Heel That Pain, Performance Fit) intended to provide arch support and / or provide pressure to address PF. These insoles have offered me good relief in off-court shoes and work boots. Do you have thoughts on their usefulness in hard court shoes? And, if you have time for a second question, do you recommend avoiding tennis while trying to alleviate PF?
@FootDoctorZach

Typically if an insert works for shoes and boots ive found it works well for performance shoes- but everyones different thats just my experience- in terms of avoiding sports there are a variety of opinions and research advocating for and discouraging activity with PF- you would have to work with your doctor to see where you are in your course of plantar fasciitis and what your body can tolerate

Way late to the party here, but I'm a MUCH bigger fan of the Run Comfort (or even the Trailblazer, they're very similar) from Superfeet. I like the Green ones for casual wear, but there are a couple ways I think they don't really work great for active sports. First, I think the top layer is pretty slick to be honest. Especially compared to the two I mentioned. That's probably my biggest issue with them. Second, the foam doesn't provide a ton of cushion. It's extremely firm. And last, I feel like they add too much height under the heel, again especially compared to the other two. I've had a LOT of problems with plantar fasciitis and since using the Run Comfort and Trailblazers in my active shoes, I haven't had any issues. I am also a HUGE fan of New Balance's 3210 insoles but they no longer make them. I think the brand 10 Seconds makes them now, but I'm not sure if the quality is the same. They're thicker and a bit wider, but if the factory insole you're removing was a little thicker to begin with, they work beautifully.

Hi Doc! I just stumbled across your channel after Googling a tennis shoe I’m interested in buying - super good content! I do have a few questions though. 1. I have a custom orthotic. How can I tell if it’s a good one? The bottom is super hard plastic that doesn’t flex at all. It does have a pretty nice heel cup and arch, as well as lateral support on the other side. 2. I have super flat feet. I’m looking to get the Nike GP Turbo’s possibly to use with my custom orthotics. Would you recommend not using my orthotics? 3. What tennis shoes do really well with custom orthotics? Thank you very much in advance and looking forward to hearing back from you! - Diego

I have been wearing Vapor X’s for years (with no issues) but recently bought a pair of Nike Vapor X Knit and have been experiencing some ball of the foot/base of 2nd toe pain. Not sure if it bruising, metatarsalgia, Morton’s or something else. But this is a complaint I have heard others make about this model (though not of the vapor x!) In your opinion are the soles of the vapor x and the vapor x knit the same? If so, what would be causing this pain? Are the insoles different? Do the vapor x knit have less cushioning? Which insoles would you recommend for the vapor x knit with this issue? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks 👍
@FootDoctorZach

Pwstp Pinnacle Maxx has a 2-degree offset in their heel for overpronation. Should you get these if you do not have overpronation? My right foot might have some mild pronation and my left foot might have a little supination (not 100% sure though) so don't want to continue wearing them if they would cause problems? They feel good on my feet when playing b-ball especially since my heel sits lower in the pinnacle Max than the other pinnacle full length insole which the heel cup does not seem to be as deep comparing them side by side or feel. Maybe just a neutral orthotic power step pulse might work better versus the 2 degree maxx-offset? I'm not sure of their heel cup depth though.

Recently, I've been experiencing some ball foot pain in my left foot more towards the left side of my foot. I'm wearing the same orthotics in both shoes but I don't understand why I'm having this ball of foot pain when I'm essentially wearing the tarsal pads. My question is I play pickleball.
