His pessimism and self-disappointment is clouding his judgement and getting in the way of him supporting a loved one. not really, applying to law school is an expensive and time consuming ordeal it's not 'just an application' its an expensive entrance exam that takes a lot of preparation, expensive and time consuming applications, flights, hotels, etc. to interviews if she even gets an interview offer (if she's writing at a sub-highschool level that is unlikely). It's likely he's just thinking about how much law school sucked and how much debt he's in now, as that's all I hear from the people who are in or have completed grad school. About the first two stories: "The other person in this story went absolutely crazy for NO REASON while I was perfectly logical and reasonable the whole time!" is such a staple of AITA stories. It's always clear that either the whole story is fake or the person who wrote it did something horrible and knows they're in the wrong, but is trying to get sympathy from the internet anyway.
@nomoretwitterhandles
@nomoretwitterhandles Год назад
I mean, that's not always true. I've dealt with some incredibly manipulative and explosive people. It's not the most common reaction from people, but those people and those reactions do exist. And with social media these days, I wouldn't be surprised if the butter aunt cried "fatphobia!" over being asked to not display such an unhealthy eating habit (which DOES rub off on children). Like, seriously, there are people who genuinely believe exercise, eating healthy, or anorexia is fatphobic. It's insane how some people behave. As for the first guy, I think his point would've been better if he wasn't so pessimistic. He can be worried about her potential struggles without telling her to give up a dream. He should've offered to help her achieve her dream instead. Her reaction was totally valid imo.
@IAmNotAWoodenDuck
@IAmNotAWoodenDuck Год назад
@@nomoretwitterhandles It may not always be true, but I'd say that in most situations it is. The whole idea that someone's obsessed with butter to the point that a child might try to replicate it and starts screeching immediately when a "calm and reasonable" person asks them to stop reads like a massive stereotype and in no way realistic. Is it possible that it's true? Sure, all kinds of people exist. But there exist way more people who would make up stories to make fun of people or who would try to safe face by pretending that the other party was unreasonable. To me personally it seems like a very unrealistic story. I've seen the same format a million times before and not just when it's about fat people. There's a particular genre of stories that seems to go "look how CRAZY (insert group of people) are because of the story I made up in which I'm the hero." Though I do agree with you on the first story. The writer might not have had awful intentions, but his pessimism was uncalled for and her reaction seems reasonable when I think about it.

He says he's unhappy with his job and how there's limitations to what you can do in the field to fight for justice and I think he's letting that color his idea of the future and he's projecting that same bitterness onto his gf. I feel like he could have been way more supportive and said something to the effect of 'here are some reasons why you may become dissatisfied with this job in the future but if you're sure that's what you want I'll support you. I can proof read your stuff" plus he went through the rigmarole already so he could definitely help her learn the technical jargon and writing styles. Ik every discipline has wildly different standards and a Dissertation is v different from a Law case, but a lot of technical writing tends to stem from knowing the jargon and connotations in your field far more than your aptitude for grammar and punctuation. English is also my second language (I speak it fluently though) and I still have issues with grammar and spelling occasionally but I *know* my technical terms for my field and my Profs care way more about the fact that I understand these concepts rather than 'hey you forgot a comma here' or 'this sentence is worded oddly' because spellchecker and stuff do exist on most typing apps. I know law school isn't a masters/PhD in Social Sciences but I have a sneaking suspicion her professors would have a similar attitude, most of my profs are willing to let me turn in essays early for proof reading so I don't lose points for minor stuff.

Might still have stung to hear, but that's a respectful (and not subtly racist) way of telling her she needs to improve her writing. And from the sound of it, she probably would've done it, powered through, and gotten a law degree. But he was just like "sorry, your English sucks so there's no way it's gonna happen" which just tears her down when he should be building her up. (and to clarify about the racism bit, the racism comes in where he assumes that because she is bad at writing essays in English, that she is therefore weak in language-universal functions like paying attention to precise wording, essay structure, or remembering case law. and also that she cannot improve her written English. it's a rationalized version of "bad English ergo stupid" and that's probably why she responded like she did)

It astounds me what morons you can find at very respectable positions at my university, not to mention other general positions of power around the world. It's very believable for someone who doesn't have the smarts for much to slip between the cracks and manage to get good credentials on paper. Also, as a non-native english speaker who uses english as a primary language despite living in the country I was born in, it is extremely common for people under the age of 40 to speak perfect english. You need it. Half of what you're given as mandatory literature at university is in english. Everything on the internet is in english. If you suck at writing in it, there's no way you can be a proper professional when it comes to law, since every little detail and way of wording matters astronomically. If you don't naturally have a way with language and technicalities, there's no way you can be a proper professional in the field.

And buying concert tickets is kind of forcing someone to get out and be social which I would definitely dislike BUT that doesn't mean that he can just fucking YELL at someone! What happened to just *communicating* like adults? If I were in that situation I definitely would've thanked the person for being thoughtful enough to remember my favourite musician and get tickets but also express that it is too much to not only do it as a surprise but also have it be something with so many other people in attendance like a concert (I personally barely leave the house bc of my anxiety disorder). I'd still try to go with them just so that they wouldn't feel like they wasted their money in case there are no refunds available or are a bad person for wanting to give me something nice without telling me beforehand. But actually yelling at someone for that and then insulting them on top of it AS WELL AS ignoring them for days? Nope. There didn't have to be an asshole in that situation at all. I actively tell people not to get me anything because I would rather spend time with them than have to figure out how how to quietly get rid of the things they bought me when I know they're going to throw a fit about me not liking it. In a family where giving gifts is an obligation and a power move rather than a genuine act of kindness and affection, this mindset of "please don't surprise me with gifts" is kind of natural. He was definitely an ass about it regardless, you don't yell at people for spending money on you unless they're hatecriming you with it somehow (which is possible, like buying a gay person a book designed to teach them how to ungay themselves and stuff like that). Either the birthday husband has deeply rooted trauma around birthday gifts and needs to see a therapist before they can continue the marriage or he is just an emotionally abusive a-hole who she needs to leave. Either way, she should be seriously reconsidering their relationship.

I have HATED the AITA sub lately. It's all "am i the asshole for telling this family should die?" I much prefer the AmITheAngel sub.

The first one: He seems a bit parental in the way he acts. I kinda think he is sort of the asshole, but not entirely. I get his concerns, but based around his wording, we don't actually know what was said. And it seems like he's against the idea entirely, like not even trying to support it. Not in a "I don't agree with it, I know how hard it is" way, but more like "I don't see this going well and so I'm not going to support her." He could have added more constructive criticism, but we don't actually know what was said tbh. Still, I feel he should have still tried to help her while trying to make her expectations more realistic. And at worse, if her writing skills are that bad, she'd most likely get rejected. It is honestly complicated and I feel since we don't know how it truly went down, I don't really wanna accuse him of being the worst. But some of his wording (like the base point) kind of shows that he didn't really try to give constructive criticism, but that is just an assumption based on what we were given. Second story: She has to apply it in the kitchen, but like...wouldn't the girl still see her eating it? Butter on a hotdog is difficult to miss. Her applying it in the kitchen isn't gonna change the fact that it can be seen. I get wanting kids to have healthy habits, but just talk to your kid. And who knows if the kid would even find that appetizing in any way. Not to mention, what else the kid is seeing at like school with "unhealthy" lunches and all. The woman is an asshole for sure, man. If she's that worried about the kid's health, she can have a talk with her. People eat differently, people eat healthy and unhealthy. That kid is gonna see a lot of unhealthy eating anyway. Third story: I'll start out saying, I still do birthday lists and requests as an adult. My whole family does and my friends as well. But we also accept surprise gifts. Like I got to open a birthday gift early from my friend and it was something I hadn't expected! I also purposefully add more gifts to the list than I know I'll get so it can be a "surprise" if my parents only get me things from there. I know they can't afford a ton so I give a list of things I want and wait to see. Sometimes I get surprise gifts, but I think that happens more at Christmas. Now for my actual opinions on the story. What the hell. He YELLED at her?! She told him about the tickets and even suggested it, not even as a birthday gift and he yelled at her?! Girl, run! Omg that is so not okay! I get not liking surprises and stuff, but she saw an opportunity and brought it up! And it's his favorite artist, not some random group or one of HER favorites! And he said "stupid bitch?!" Okay, okay, girl, run. That is NOT a good man! "I feel like I should have read between the lines" I'm autistic, no hun. You should not be forced to read between the lines. He should have communicated better and even then, his reaction is ridiculous! He's this angry because you got him tickets to an artist he likes! I feel so bad for this woman, I wanna cry honestly. Two days of anger. Jesus Christ. I can't imagine ever getting angry at my girlfriend for that long. Even if he doesn't like surprises, it does not justify insulting her! Gross, icky icky icky. I feel so bad for this woman, she deserves better :'(

Just starting the video, but I'm ready to choke on my jello from this video. Update: The jello was saved from disaster, but my throat was not. The butter portion of this video made me inhale sharply on a mouthful of jello, and Vacuum Mode activated instantly. 8.5/10 Stars. Would not recommend consuming jello whilst watching this video, however.

With the first one, I had a similar experience with my mom. She is one of the smartest people I know and her English is fluent, however I think she basically never had to do long form writing (she's a doctor). One time she wrote a letter to George Bush and I also was surprised and I think I even made fun of her a little :(. Now that I'm older I can see that being practiced in long form writing and intelligence are very different things.
@Bulhbluhbuy

But thats the thing, its something that can be practiced and learned. Thats why his criticism is so bizarre. Being able to write well is a skill that can be learned and improved.
