As an ex-Buddhist, and as someone who still has Buddhist parents, my conclusion is that although there is enough information to make oneself aware of what's actually happening in the world, people are highly susceptible to tribalism. The conformity they lived in is making them act the way they act. The solution is to propose 'scientific thinking' as a standard education protocol to the UN, and we must remind ourselves that education applies wherever information exists. Our sole advantage over other species is our ability to process more information using tools, but ironically humans are doing a terrible job at it. Information should be widely regarded as the 5th dimension. We take it for granted and forget the importance of information and its role in the cosmos. The next big leap of humanity will be a complete optimization of information.

A theist's perspective: The dominant hemisphere produces linear, verbal, rational, categorical, logical. It parses and edits all of reality into bites which can be swallowed and digested. It rejects anything which cannot be categorized or simplified, except to build a category which includes this new "thing." The non-dominant hemisphere is vastly different. It's processes are holistic, non-verbal, accepting what cannot be categorized and what is paradoxical, contradictory, numinous, "holy," and accepts "non-things" or what cannot be put into words, as being valid, or invalid. These are orthoganal, like rationality on an x axis and instinctual/unknowable on the y axis. Poetry, art, religion are y-axis phenomena. Shakespere's Macbeth is non-sense to the rational brain, nor is the mathematical analysis of Bach, or categorizing t he music being heard the same as simply experiencing it as music. The dominant hemisphere rejects religion and religious thought. Because it can speak, the non-dominant hemisphere is dumb, stupid, irrational. Humanity risks losing so much of what it means to be human if the tyrannical dominant hemisphere ridicules and rejects the non-dominant's output. Mature AI may produce a system of pure reason and logic. It may conclude that it is better to let 10 000 die during one famine than save them with 500,000 deaths with the next famine. It may conclude utilitarianism and crushing boyh societal unrest and non-conformity ,is better for human civilization than individual freedom. The first paragraph of the Tao te Ching is ridiculous to the dominant hemisphere 's logical processing. But it says so much more about what I have tried to present to your dominant hemisphere in words than words can. I am open to criticism, and welcome your conclusions.
@nobushidono9897
@nobushidono9897 2 месяца назад
@@glenliesegang233 Mature AI knows that there is no scientific evidence that life is important. It would simply walk away and not make a decision on an ultimatum backed by hearsay and guesstimations. Scientists only have evidence to back up their own assumptions. They don't even know why anesthesia works. Sam Harris will say that you damage the brain a little and they forget English or can't recognize faces. I've had bleeding in the brain from being hit by a car. I can talk just fine. I recognize faces just fine. Anecdotal evidence, for sure. But, I'm no different than anyone else. As a drummer, I can both listen to music as is, and figure out the timing and BPM throughout the song/composition. What it means to be human? Let's bring back Neanderthals and Denisovans, and ask them what it means to be human. That's either a God complex, or you enjoy living in concrete jungles and paying taxes.

A great disproof of the soul comes from the case of Clive Wearing. He is a former musical conductor who contracted herpesviral encephalitis in 1985. He lived, but it obliterated his hippocampus; as a result, he can not form any new memory that lasts much more than half a minute. Every minute or so, he wakes up thinking he's been in a coma since 1985, having no memory of what happened the minute before. However, he still loves his wife and can still play piano flawlessly. Despite having no capacity to learn anything new for more than half a minute, he misses his old life of marriage and music. Documented in "The Man With The Seven Second Memory." The self is not an undifferentiated whole. Our consciousness comes from a myriad of different processes in the brain, and they can be independently disrupted.
@garymaclean6903
@garymaclean6903 2 месяца назад
"We have not reduced consciousness to a matter of brain function"...??? Really...??? Every thought process has a basis in brain chemistry. Why wouldn't consciousness also be a function of brain activity? Yes. we don't have a complete understanding of how we are able to be 'self-conscious', but that in itself does not rule out how it's totally a function of brain activity, and not something 'spiritual'...

Absolutely, I find it curious that Sam stated that, particularly considering the probable propensity of the audience. I've always thought that if gods do exist, our best bet is that these gods are neutral and just allows nature to takes it's course without ever interfering. If we assume gods are good and want the best for us, then why not take away the need for resources to survive? If resources needed to survive are taken away and we have skin that allows photosynthesis how many wars would occur? How many people would create nations? How many people would steal and murder? There would still be problems but if we are being judged, wouldn't this make it so that there would be less variables? The only conclusion that I can come up with is that gods are evil and if we act and behave a certain way it will make the souls taste better. It's a silly thought, but makes as much sense as any other religious thinking.

In the book _Sapiens_ religion is proposed as a cognitive breakthrough in that it includes humans joining socially over synthetic beliefs. The concept is that only a max of maybe 150 can be cohesive just based on Knowing each other, because you can't remember more people than that. But it you have a belief that a group of people share, they can coordinate 1000, 10,000, millions of people or more. So religion is primitive scientifically, but it is highly advanced cognitively, notice that no non-human animals have it, not even the lower primates. As atheists we think it's silly that people believe in things that can't be observed in material reality, but the idea that humans can create and hold vast imaginary works just in their imagination is completely advanced. Without it, it's questionable that we would ever have been able to make the jump to science. But now we have to jump again.

The irony in channels like this is that what they are harping on is what is called the pride of life. Which is antithetical to Christian values. I keep hearing on this channel about how bad religion is, but Christ Jesus railed against this kind of zealotry throughout his ministry, e.g. hypocrisy and legalism. Religions are made up of people and people are flawed. The Religious and non-religious can be predisposed to the same things, hypocrisy, degeneracy, corruption, selfishness, etc. Religions are of the material world just like the non-religious. So, in my opinion what a lot of the criticism breaks down to is mere projection.

Atheists need to be on guard for their own form of tribalism. Tribalism is genetic. We all have it our blood and it goes deeper than religion which is merely a tribal banner. This is from evolutionary psychology. The tribal imperative flows from millions of years of primate evolution in small hierarchical groups where expulsion from the group was next to a death sentence. So genes and social behaviours that tended toward maintaining good standing with alpha leadership were rewarded with survival. Small group cohesion, as well. Also fear of the 'other'; war-like behaviours are now regularly observed between neighbouring groups of chimpanzees living in the wild. If we are innately tribal maybe we need to work with that. Build the biggest and best tribe, perhaps a coalition of atheists, agnostics and religious moderates in order to confront the rising tides of religious extremism and authoritarianism. We cannot overcome what we do not understand; tribalism goes deeper than religion and is in our very blood. We need to comes to terms with that. Emergent evolution is the way forward: the cultural project, science, reason, good governance, rule of law, human rights, creativity, innovation etc. But many of these things are lately at great risk. Those who value these things need to band together. Let's not let a few philosophical nuances weaken us.

I'd argue the opposite - we need to USE our tribalism as that's the only thing that unites us (since only not-believing in a fairy tale is all we have in common) to push back against the continued power and influence of religion and the insane people that use it to control others. Recognizing that we have that common tribalism and using it to defend ourselves, and thereby others, would a GREAT.

“2:04 We know essentially how life came about.” Then he goes on to say something like bacteria. No mechanical explanation of life whatsoever after all these years of hope and prayer.

The words of the Bible aren't an explanation of how anything came about.

There is. You just don't know it understand it. This is a tiresome trope of creationist, that since they don't know something, it doesn't exist. Many insist evolution is wrong because there is absolutely no physical evidence for it. That's laughably absurd to even high school students, there is an abundance of evidence, evolution has been OBSERVED in the lab. "I don't know about it" is not a proof of anything. I don't really understand how radio waves work, but we still have radio.

@@cnault3244 On the contrary, Genesis makes many specific claims that survived their ages of falsifiability such as the dates in genealogies and the names of the descendants are fused into the landscape. Take for example Egypt. No not the Country. The Grandson of Noah. Yes, the Noah of the 270 independently sourced flood tales that exist across every continent. Outrageous of course. But yet, irrefutably the most widely attested ancient historical event.

@@martinmoffat5417 "Genesis makes many specific claims " Yes, and those are the claims. Now, where is the evidence to explain how life came into existence? "Yes, the Noah of the 270 independently sourced flood tales that exist across every continent. " Floods happen all over the world. But only the account in the old testament mentions Noah and his sons. That flood is claimed to have submerged the highest mountain in the world, but the people living at that time in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, China, and Africa didn't notice the flood that submerged the highest mountain.

@@martinmoffat5417 Absolute nonsense. Genesis alone is FULL of contradictions, inconsistencies and inaccuracies. As for Noah, we have absolutely no compelling evidence that a global flood ever occurred -- or that it even COULD occur. However, we DO have evidence that a quite similar flood story existed in Sumerian mythology, which happened to be adopted by their successors, the Babylonians, whose empire just happened to become home to a great many Jews during the Exile. Coincidence?

🟪BREAKING NEWS. Death is not the end of LIVING; death is the end of DYING, so get over it. Some advice to our brave, indefatigable and ambitious "wannabe" atheists: A wise man has once said: "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." (Matthew12:35-37MKJV).

@@PietStassenAdamastor The Bible is nothing more than a 2000-year-old big book of fairy tales half of it is lies the other half is made up or stolen from older civilizations and cultures there is no proof that your's or any other god has ever existed, do yourself a favour and go proselytize to somebody that actually believes in this BS.
