How adorable everyone looks. The clothes, the dancing, the set design. Is that enough though, to turn a comic panel into a screenplay?
The Archies isn’t ALL show and no substance. The usually bitchy-ness one expects to be the flavor of a high school story, is replaced by kindness and acceptance. A sweet moment between Dilton and Reggie made my cold heart happy. There is a rather random but enjoyable little bop about how everything is political, right from the lunch we eat to the way we dress for school. In a lesser film, this would have been a dance off between 2 women fighting over the attention of a boy. Here it is a sing along goading its young viewers into political action, the sequence setting the stage for a later sequence with a group of kids standing up against town management to protect trees in the city park. The writing ALSO wants to talk about what it means to be “Indian”, why minorities deserve to live where they chose to, and in portions these attempts at civic statements come through. There is also a slightly underlined, but memorable scene where Reggie’s publisher father, played by Luke Kenny, tells Reggie about the importance of a free press, and what it is like to be a journalist operating under the government’s eye. If the internet has shown us anything recently, it is that genz is today very much interested in talking about all the above. Even if Agastya looks only mildly amused amidst it all.
There are 2 parallel conflicts in the narrative we are shown. A love triangle between Archie, Ronnie and Betty. The other is industrial capitalism. The battle against the industrialist who wants to level the park to make a hotel still has some escalation, an ascension, movement. However, the sudden rush with which BOTH conflicts are resolved gave me whiplash. The conclusions presented are so simple and rapid, it left me wondering if there IS no other way to rehash this story? And if Riverdale, did the only thing that could have been done and turned the story into a bizarre sleepy small-town murder mystery, which I am to understand later even became supernatural?
You watch and tell me, the movie is now streaming happily on Netflix.

The Archies is a 2023 Indian English and Hindi-language teen musical comedy film directed by Zoya Akhtar who also produced the film with Reema Kagti under Tiger Baby Films and Sharad Devarajan under Graphic India. The film features the fictional music band produced by and related to Archie Comics, starring Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor, Suhana Khan, Vedang Raina, Mihir Ahuja, Aditi Saigal and Yuvraj Menda in the lead roles.The Archies is scheduled for release on Netflix on 7 December 2023.
Set in 1960s India, Archie and the gang navigate romance, friendship and the future of Riverdale as developers threaten to destroy a beloved park.

Probably a movie that defies all traditional concepts of a hero and takes me into a different world of how that character is. Somewhat innocent but also unapologetic. Is there anything like the old classic this week? A character like 'raging bull', or a character like sunny deol from 'Ghayal', or may be a glimpse of scarface 'say hello to my little friend', or may be something original like a fight sequence with a chorus. You tell me. After all, that's what you get paid for. Review karo. Kya achha laga kya achha nahi laga bolo. Don't act like you know it all. Your are audience, . 0001℅ audience. Aur sath mein, thodi sharam karo.

Yes, perhaps the rich people aren't the problem. How it was adapted was the problem. I loved Dil dhadakne Do beyond I can explain. But I feel no hunch to watch this one

Zoya has proved once again after her 'Made in Heaven-2' debacle, that she can only cater to English speaking, wanna-be white class... which is pretentious, artificial, fake and totally distanced from reality...!!! If she is so obsessed with English, she should, along with her nepo crew, relocate to Hollywood, atleast then something more original and real stuff may come out of her.... making indians speak English and accented Hindi... makes them look like clowns...!!! Stop this buffoonery please and make hindi films in india if u have to.. for English or semi English films go to west and cast westners, that would be the real deal..!!! Dont cheat people by serving badly cooked cheap beta version of continental food, in the name of Indian/hindi cuisine!!!!

Her English is not natural, it's like forcing heavy words in between sentences just to look educated, but there is no flow. Also notice that she looks at a screen/script (she looks slightly away from camera) while speaking this review, which means she first wrote the review and then just read it out. This is not a natural communication English, but it is try hard English. Look for written books from good authors for good English writing.

@@sugandhapant6937 the wrong is that the flow of her speaking/English is not natural - you have to listen to her sentences 2 to 3 times to understand what she wants to say. - it's like she write a statement in simple English words - then selects some verbs in that sentence - finds synonyms which are never heard of before - and replace those simple English verbs with those synonyms - but the problem is the rest of the statement is still with simple English words, and these synonyms don't organically gel with the remaining statement.

I refuse to believe these kids actually auditioned for these roles. Amidst the gorgeous sets, watching them attempting to "perform"... was let's say visual diarrhoea. And all the PR tweets praising them is so nauseating.

In one of the interviews, Vedang (Reggie Mantle) said he went through multiple rounds of auditions for Archie and then didnt get a response for a long time. When he was called, he was told that his auditions were liked by Zoya but they want him to play the part of Reggie. Its kind of obvious that the star kids were just given the part midway through the audition process. Vedang would have done much better as Archie. As for Suhana, Khushi and Agastya, the less said the better.

the problem with this movie is that it takes American characters and then puts them in a Anglo -Indian environment from the 1960s in a set piece that looks neither Indian ,American, or British but rather somewhat French

I grew up reading Archies 📚. I was excited to show my teen daughter this movie, sinceshe hasn'tread any Archies books yet. All she said was "is this how pathetic those comic books you read?". 😢 I m super disappointed.

This is what happens when you give non-deserving people, opportunities. They got a dream launch in bollywood, and nothing about the movie suggets that they worked hard prior to it, in terms of acting, screen presence etc. If you can't even do the prep propoerly with the potential end result already being served on platter, do you really deserve a spot? Nepotism is fine, as long as the candidate genuinely is talented and you know as a matter of fact that they will make the best use of this opportunity given. But when you have backgrounds like SRK, Sridevi and Amitabh B, and you still manage to act like this, or to not develop your skill sets with so much access and network, that's just pathetic and entitiled. But alas, Zoya will defend it to her grave saying these were the most suited people for this role.

I can't agree with you more. The problem with nepotism is that movies are treated like acting schools for these non deserving non-actors, they learn with each film, they are given opportunities one after another while perfectly good actors from outside are pushed to the sidelines to accomodate the privileged.

Hi @sucharita, I liked the way you presented the review today... and I don't mean what you said about the movie or the actors, but just the rhythm of the review, the pace at which you spoke, the "theraav" if you will... that's what I liked... no agitation, no rush, no over enthusiasm, just normal, simple, direct presentation... This is exactly what I was worried about this film! It’s cute n all Bt it (trailer) felt empty from inside! I’m a fan of zoya’s previous work, I reallly wanted to like this one but it was alright at best! N regarding the acting power in this film, you said it in the best way, “they have a long way to go!”

This is THE honest review of archies!!!!! I mean u were spot on suhanna and kushi. They were just smiling and lazy.. even agasthya. Other actors kept more mark. Also u were right about dialogue. I don't know if uts mostly English, its just soo plain... I know its a comedy. But it's soo vanilla... Only positive things were the sets and costumes.. they were a treat to watch.. and some songs..

It's not about language. This movie is just boring and everything looks like a copy. Hindi speaking audiences watch global content with subtitles on, if it's good and worth watching. And nobody can explain why all the characters are painted WHITE.

The movie may be disappointing but I don't agree with people saying it's not relatable to Indian audience. Not every movie has to be massy right? These same audience has liked shows like sex education, Riverdale, Elite etc and made them hugely popular on ott in india. You mean to say those are relatable to Indian audience? I really don't understand the criticism. It is supposed to be a teen musical. It's pretty good for a teen musical. Teen musicals are very much like this. Whether you look at the Indian teen musicals or American, they are very simplistic. At least Zoya Akhtar tried to add some substance to the film. It's a comic book adaptation at the end of the day.

Easily it's Zoya's worst film till date. The only similarity between Archies and Animal is that both films are too far off from reality, but Animal is non stop entertainment with terrific performances and music whereas Archies is an epitome of boredom multiplied by 1000

Yes, I had the same sentiment that maybe going "dark and weird" like the Riverdale show was the only way to make the Archie comics entertaining for screen 😅. Because this movie is exactly like the comics with it's low stakes and good small town folks where no body is really that bad, including the antagonists. But maybe that wasn't enough to make an interesting movie. One can watch it for some fun choreography and the overall aesthetics.

I'm a little amazed to see people expressing disappointment with Zoya Akhtar's movie for its lack of depth. It's "The Archies" for crying out loud, not Grapes of Wrath. The filmmakers were true to the (arguably callow) spirit of the comics and recreated that feel admirably. Why people were going in expecting Citizen Kane is beyond me.

not a good movie:- pathetic acting - khusi kapoor bad acting- agastya, yuvraj not so good acting -- suhana very average acting -- mihir, vedang, aditi/dot good acting-- rest all other remaining cast good point- cinematography and costume design bad point-- story writing, screenplay, performance by lead, and no hidden subplot nothing everything was revealed in trailer. final verdict -- not worth the time if you value your time

I watched it just now and bolted to youtube to watch your take on it😂 I kind of liked it, as I had ZERO expectations from it. Movie looks Brilliant. Agsatya looks best when he is dancing, Khushi is tall and sounds like Janhvi, Suhana does better in serious bits but dances like a 7 YO, Mihir as Jughead is really good, Dilton is cute as a button! Storytelling is just average

Of the entire lot of newbies Vedang Raina stands out. Suhana is good in certain scenes. Agastya just pulls off his job somehow, but Khushi Kapoor is just another dumb star kid imposed upon the audience... Ki tumhe jhelna hi padega isse bcz she hails from a film family. Overall Archies is a one time watch, nothing more nothing less.

I wish they had actually leaned all the way towards the 'whimsical' and 'cutesy' and fun part of the movie, instead of trying to create some kind of 'depth'. The filmmakers could have made just a fun-filled whimsical musical, and nothing else.

The issue is not how relatable it is or not. Not every story has to be relatable to the audience. The issue wasn’t even the performances. Suhana khan got heavily criticised during promotions and actually she’s alright as an actor. The issue was the length. It went great for the first 45 mins - hour and then got boring. I mean it’s not some overly complicated story to be observed for 2+ hours so once you learn the premise it was as if, can we just get to it already and get it over with. The trailer gave away the story anyway. I genuinely didn’t care enough about any of the characters to sit and watch them for that long. Well may be they should’ve taken more time developing the characters, give us each of their backgrounds and letting us know how they’re close friends. This assumption that ever immediately connects with Archie’s characters anyway was pretty silly. Zoya Akthar being the director was the only faith I had about this movie but shame how that ended up being the weak point.

I went n watched zindagi na mileage dobara on Netflix recently. But that movie for that era made a lot of sense n I remember loving it back then . It somewhat falls flat when I watch now. Looks like zoya is still stuck in a timeline but her viewers have progressed since then n expect a lot more from her. Maybe she needs to grow. Moreover in recent interview , she shyed away from even giving a vocal credit for her writers in Archies movie.🤷🏻‍♀️so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️Reema was still better than her. In that interview. She was more open to give credit where it’s due

Zoya has proved once again after her 'Made in Heaven-2' debacle, that she can only cater to English speaking, wanna-be white class... which is pretentious, artificial, fake and totally distanced from reality...!!! If she is so obsessed with English, she should, along with her nepo crew, relocate to Hollywood, atleast then something more original and real stuff may come out of her.... making indians speak English and accented Hindi... makes them look like clowns...!!! On Episode one, I was expecting Veronica will be all red.. they all look amazingly good but the actual Netflix Riverdale is so much in the mind that it is a bit difficult to adjust the excitement to move further.

previous bollywood kids could act atleast Sonakshi S was so good in akira, lotera pari in her 1st flim LvsRB.. why now this days so called actors cant act, need time after 1st flim why "lot to improve" if 1 can 4 can't..Janvi k improve but she never can play a character 100% maybe 90% but not 100%.. Im fade up now,im happy with my drama atleast all actors can act ...

I just finished watching this movie. I’m surprised it’s a 2.5 hour film. This could have easily been an hour shorter and have more of an impact. The film just never quite gets off its feet for me. It’s self indulgent and at times, arrogant. It’s got this feel about it that “we haven’t made this movie for you, we’ve made it for us, because we can”. Having said that, I think Suhana Khan and Vedang Raina have potential if they pick the right projects.

I have watched it now can someone agree with me that suhana and khushi dialogue delivery is veryyyyy stiff maybe its their first movie i was trying not to be too critical but it still came off as stiff to me honestly speaking only vedang was better in dialogue delivery also aside from the nepo babies other cast members were basically used as props

Gotta give praise to the Production Design, Costumes, Art Direction, Cinematography and Choreography. The guy playing Reggie impressed me..Agastya, Khushi and Suhana seemed to have some screen presence but their acting left a lot to be desired..The supporting cast was excellent..The story, not so much..Overall, an average affair..5/10..

We just watched a comic book come to life, and not in a good way. The dialogues are stunted. The editing is wack. Why would you pull focus from the main plot, aka the park being ripped apart, and shine it on Veronica and Betty interrogating Jughead and then waking Archie up to tell him something inconsequential? This could have worked better as a series where each character could be given a chance to develop. Plus, Moose was basically an ornament on set. I'm a fan of Zoya and Reema's body of work but this was a huge miss.

The Archies is like wannabe Barbie in terms of marketing. Both tried to create a whirlwind of excitement before its release. It hype it up enough that people watch movies just not to feel left out. The only difference is the quality of content - story. Barbie - 1 Archies - 0. And people should start talking about nepotism again

My Archies would be set in Mussorie, kids wearing Indian 60s fashion, eating samosas and drinking sugarcane juice and trying to set up a band that sings cool hindi numbers a la Usha Uthup (60s craze). I really believe in order to bring American Archies characters live one needs to have grown up in that culture otherwise you end up with another 'kuchh kuchh hota hai' cringe.
