Thank you for posting, I have always said a drummer is not a drummer until he/she harnesses the power/feel of Latin music. What I didn't realize is the construct is based on Claves patterns. AMAZING.

Very happy to see this channel still available....... I hope Rebeca is well and treading in a pool of prosperity :) ON my "I'm gonna......" list is something I've wished for for years.....IF there were a resource that would give traditional (I don't want to say "typical") "rules" for a given style....... beginning with the song structure (e.g. the ABABCA and such forms), and also the terms such as diana, montuno, etc., when/where they occur. As for cowbells, which bell and when they play (or don't play) their particular patterns, etc. All this may be perfectly laid out in one of Rebeca's books...... I"ve had "101 Montunos" for many years; if any of her other books break down composition traditions as above, I'm all eyes and ears :) Any newcomers not yet aware of Rebeca's music, suffice it to say that her style is so distinctive, you'll know it's her within seconds. The Afro-Latino genres are so jam-packed with traditional parts, Rebeca's books and CD's bring into focus the parts that sounded like a "wall of sound" to me until someone taught me clave :) From that point, analytical listening sailed for me :)

The music represented in this video is generally categorized as "Afro-Cuban" in that the specific styles mentioned form part of Cuba's vast array of rhythms. She uses the term "Latin" in a general sense in order to reach a general audience that may not have any familiarity with this music. Both terms "Latino" and "Latin" have been commercially adopted in popular culture as a way to discuss or identify this music; of course neither term is really adequate in describing music of Latin America.

For Rebeca: I'm recalling the eons ago you had rumbeca.com; you'd apparently switched to another domain, and 'net resources about and by you were scarce. Wonderful to see SO MUCH deserved presence now :) I have had your "101 Montunos" book and CD since published. I've seen "Salsa Guidebook......" and see it as an oracle :) I'm reading Vernon Boggs' "Salsiology" ...... at some point in the myriad of articles that comprise the book I see terminology that's easy enough to define, but I'm wondering if there is any example breakdown of the the terms and how a "typical" composition can be shown using those terms. Terms such as diana, guajeo, montuno, etc., and what order they occur. Have you ever outlined any such method? It's not so easy to listen and take notes on sections.... other than listening to what percussion is playing (or not) and what it's playing. I'm sure some terminology is sketchy...... when I think "montuno" it's a repetitive piano pattern. Is "guajeo" not ALSO a repetitive piano pattern? There's a fact about salsa that I find more than amazing...... out of 14,000 songs, each is unique. Even if they were all built on: i V7 vamp (i.e; Am E7) (and how many aren't?) each would be unique :) However, there must be a method such as a song form ABABCABDCAB "typically" used? Any thoughts, ideas from anyone gets big gratitude in advance :)

@DJKAYZEE HI, I "naturally" dance 1,2 .... 3 , unsure this is the son montuno phrasing...or Rumba... it allow to have a good use with the last beat of the 3 side of the clave. Being not experienced enough yet to have the casino passes I know in place whith that phrasing.... but as I like it I will work on that, (when trying to dance more usually (and on1) I felt easily on a 2-3 sensation, it differs from the one generally danced, as you stated...

@Pianotec you're right about the clave not being as noticable, and as far as dancing goes, Timba takes the casino dancing to a whole another level but as long you dance the 3-2 in casino style everything should be fine there are some dances that are incorporated in timba dancing that not "advance dancers" in NY salsa would not be able to do. which dancing are you inclined towards more?
@IsaacOLEG
@IsaacOLEG 12 лет назад
@DJKAYZEE Thank you , no I listened to 14 Timba "standards" (I will send the list) , and heard all of them with a 3-2 clave orientation (some could be in rumba clave for sure, but I did not test that at that time). I believe that it is not as easy to hear the clave orientation in Timba, than in Son, or older salsas... Does it make a noticeable change for dancers ? (3-2 or 2-3) , or may be only to more advanced dancers ?... (Los VanVan most recent tunes, Pupy, etc...cuban music)

For non musicians, could you explain what is going on with the piano that makes you feel the clave? Are there specific notes hitting at the beats the clave would normally play? To drive my point home, the conga has so many notes within the 8 counts of two bars that they also include the beats where the clave would play but there are so many more notes that I feel you could practically say it includes any beat from any instruments (slight exaggeration but hopefully the point and the question is clear).

@Pianotec timba uses both, and even though it does use the son clave, there are many songs that have the rumba clave i think your confusing 3-2 and 2-3 with son and rumba clave, both claves can be played in either 3-2 or 2-3

Wow.... I didn't intend to write a book here, but..... as I had posted about the "prevalence" of 2-3 clave seeming much more frequently encountered than 3-2 in the music I listen to, I'm curious as to whether certain styles of AfroLatino music tend to be "based" more in 3-2? For example, I'm pretty addicted to: Eliades Ochoa, Eddie Palmieri, Johnny Pacheco, Guajiro Mirabal, Roberto Roena, Quinto Mayor, Celia Cruz, Diego Gale, Ismael Rivera, Fruko y sus Tesos, ....... seems 98% of their music is on 2-3. Open for suggested listening to hear the counterpart, which as is typical I describe as the "Hand Jive" or "Bo Diddley" feel. thanks for the thoughts :)

@DJKAYZEE Hello, thanks for the answer. I feel the rythm, and I like for instance to dance one twoo......syncop, or 4 th beat, or even Son Montuno rythm. In France most dancers are dancing on1 , OK but it render less on syncopated parts. On2 (Mambo) seem to be more adapted to more Portorican oriented music, often 2-3 clave, also. easy to get cheated in comprehension of rythm.. I also like to dance on2 even if the music is not, but in anycase as a novice dancer I am limited...

Is 2-3 Rumba clave present in Timba ? most of the musics seem to play in3-2 with some added measures sometime but no orientation change, to my ears. My questions are : does a feel for 2-3 induce a different phrasing (syncopating) while dancing on Timba music ? I feel that if I dance in 2-3 , very few partners catch my rythm totally. Timba music seem to be more 3-2 clave oriented, but as of its less. contrasted 2 measures rythm, I used to dance it in 2-3.... Any one can help me understand?

@oneworld9071
@oneworld9071 6 лет назад
Andrew Chando Yu "a musician who's never touched latin music" Sure you've touched latin music...... you've obviously been touched by IT..... but to the point, if you learn clave you might find your entire music listening experience has changed. You'll become aware of the power of those 5 beats over 2 measures; clave is just as powerful played as not played. Like the fact that Latin percussion is as complex as it is simple...... take each rhythmic entity separately, find that they are simple repeating patterns over a one- or two measure phrase. That's the simple of it, but stack them to play simultaneously and you've got some highly sophisticated syncopation, counterpoint, and ultimately, an entire mathematical system invented centuries ago, often credited to the Yoruba nation of Nigeria. It could have been that mathematics wasn't in the original plan but surely some high-level math can be applied analytically :) ....... and I utter these things at the oracle Rebeca Mauleon....?!?! SO MUCH I'm rather desperate to know, which brings me here too seldom. If you use any sort of multitracking software such as Sonar, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One (PreSonus) and a MIDI editor's part of it, I recommend the following supplemental knowledge source: www.formedia.ca/rhythms/index.html also, RU-vid channel host Michael de Miranda's percussion lessons: ru-vid.com/show-UCzxbCDm6R9Tm_Ae_MWSCaiw I hope it's not improper to post those links on Rebeca Mauleon's page...... haven't been able to find the website creator/author of the first site, but there's a wealth of rudimentary Latin percussion there. (Edit) look for clave in all music...... if it makes you feel the urge to move your body or parts thereof, it's got clave. Much learning I did with drumstick on dashboard.

With regard to 3-2 vs 2-3 clave discussion herein.....something curious to me about how most, if not all, clave primers primarily(!) discuss 3-2 clave and treat 2-3 as the "other direction"...... about 98% of the music I hear and listen to is 2-3 clave. 3-2 is the rarity. Just curious why 3-2 is treated as the fundamental and prevalent form? and... oh yeah.... Rebeca Mauleon's books and performance are beyond fantastic :)
@rmauleon
@rmauleon 10 лет назад
Thanks for your comments - I am happy to clarify the clave question, as it is a common one stemming from the misconception that "2-3" and "3-2" refer to types of clave patterns. This nomenclature has to do with the "direction" or phrasing of the pattern within a piece of music, NOT what type of clave pattern is being used. In popular Cuban music as well as salsa and Latin jazz, there are two commonly used types of clave patterns: SON CLAVE and RUMBA CLAVE, both which are commonly notated in 2-measure phrases. Each of these clave patterns can be played in either 3-2 or 2-3 direction, and it is the MELODY which determines that direction. Furthermore, if the music is notated in 2-measure phrases, and the number of measures in a phrase remains even, the clave direction should not change. The direction will shift to the other side when there is an odd number of measures in a phrase, "naturally" turning the clave around. Of course, every song is different, and it is up to the arranger to make these transitions as smooth as possible. I hope this helps! --R. Mauleón
@salsa4everable
@salsa4everable 10 лет назад
Rebeca Mauleon I am enlightened anew, Rebeca! I hadn't known the extent to which the direction of clave was so dependent on the melody; I'd thought it was solely the harmony, but the harmony itself is absolutely dependent on clave, from what I'm experiencing..... it's so far beyond just hearing it that one begins to realize the incredible power in just five notes. A dear friend Gali Sanchez gave me one initial exposure, and once I "got it" (dashboard drumming, etc.) my entire musical experience turned 90 degrees (and more) :) I'd frequently told him "man, my life has sunken into this hopeless addiction to clave, and it was your doing!!!!" It is fascinating that so many hundreds of years ago, those five notes became the grid of nearly infinite syncopations and accompaniments, and also the fact that out of the (probable) thousands of salsa songs I love, no two sound alike, yet that force behind them is such a common thread. As simple as it is complex. And about the even/odd phrases determining direction changes.... any recommended listening will be pursued with great appreciation. I gotta stop here.....your reply made my day..... many thanks :) P.S: you said "if" the music is notated in 2-measure phrases..... is clave not always a 2-bar phrase, or is that determined by tempo, or....? I'm a little sketchy on "cut" time if that's the factor...? and oh yeh... your Round Trip stuff was golden :) Love it a LOT. Your style is absolutely distinctive.
