⁠@@lildad559if you haven’t bought it I highly suggest you do… I sold my 97 for a 99 legacy outback, pretty much exactly the same but in better condition. Gonna put forester struts on it, already got 17” forester wheels on it. Gonna paint it with black truck bedliner soon

I love both. being the honest guy I am, jeep Cherokee 4.0 with np242 transfer case is way better in snow, mud, and off road. just don't skimp on tires.

Nothing about this video shows anything that would make me think this will outdo a Jeep off road. AWD is great for rally racing, 4WD is better for actual off road driving. No saying this thing is not capable, but a Jeep with equal amount of modification will most likely outdo this Subaru across a range of obstacles.

One of the most versatile vehicles on the road imo, more cargo room than a ford exploder, off road capable, good power, stock ground clearance is ample. I plowed my driveway last winter because i wanted to, not because i had to.

that first gear thing is all the 1996-2000 legacy outback, same with reverse, theyre straight cut gears, so sometimes they dont want to shift, no synchro. when you drive one for a while you get the special jiggle touch to get it into gear

I live in Colorado and I see these everywhere. I guess they probably aren't so common in Georgia, but there are more Subaru's than almost every other vehicle combined. It's great.

Haha i love this thing, it really made me smile. Love the creativity in turning an ordinary wagon into something that looks like it came out of some off-road playstation game. Maybe i'm nostalgic about subie wagons, i grew up with a white 1997 Legacy Outback that my mom drove for many years.

Would the owner of the outback care to share how he did the lift? I've been researching this off and on the last couple months but I can only find shock piller plates for a 1.5-2" lift

Swap out the struts for Forester struts. Change the top hats from the Outback struts to the Forester struts (on the rear). Install control arm spacers on the rear also

JDM outbacks have a optional gearbox with factory high/low factory reduction gear. there is a separate leaver by the handbrake/emergency brake.

I just my 96 outback's transmission rebuilt and it still doesn't want to go into first gear unless you're at a dead stop. So it might not be unique to this one.

I can drive my stock 97 Outback 300 miles in the CO Rockies with plenty of power and its so quiet which is why Im Leaving it bone stock. Its CO luxury exponential gear onboard.... I also own an 07 4Runner..... Subie is better.....

My outback has a really low 1st gear what year is this one. And mine is a 2002 that will go through any hole almost completely stock. The only mods are a, maybe an inch, lift and a trailer hitch.

I had a '97 Subaru Outback and it was the worst car I ever had, it was great until it blew a headgasket, then I replaced the headgasket and it was great again, until it threw a rod, so I put a used engine in it, and it was awful and never ran right and one day all the coolant was in the oil pan, so the block is now a weight on my dads tractors box blade and the shell went to the junkyard where subarus belong.

Love this thing there are quite a few that mob up and down the logging roads with similar mods in northern Washington. One question though. Is this a BD-BG-BK series Legacy Outback or GC, GF, GM Impreza Outback? The "Subaru Outback" as its own model, without the Legacy or Impreza model name did not exist until the early mid 2000's.

dear god, I had that same Hurst knob on my '95 BK Legacy. That thing was misery if it was cold! Also, the 'not going into first' thing is pretty common for this generation.
