The best course I’ve ever used to learn Portuguese is one that no one seems to talk about, but that you can find for free online! I’ve tried all sorts of language learning courses over the past few decades, so in this video I explain why I love this particular one so much.

I used it for Yoruba. The audio recordings were veeeery important for such a tonal/ musical language Sometimes the US government actually does some good things

How cool! Thank you very much for this free resource online! I'll take a look. It might look dry and not be as flashy as the modern day courses available, but if I can speak Portuguese like you do at the end of the day, I'm all for it. I think you even pronounce the word Portuguese in English the same way Brazilians do (that is, the accent on the first syllable PORT versus the third syllable GUESE.

It is tough to get through, but it is an amazing course. hahahaha where exactly are you from? where I live you'll hear both pronunciations (I think!)...maybe you're right thought lol

Hi after completing the 1st part of the FSI Brazillian Portuguese FAST course, I decided to go back and do their Full Programmatic Course. After maybe 3 weeks I am on lesson 14. It feels like the really solid review that I was looking for after really stretching myself at times with the FAST course material. It is sort of boring and formal; but, I find the structure very helpful. Its satisfying to see I'm making real progress in my portuguese learning!!!
@DecodingWordswithAndrew
@DecodingWordswithAndrew 4 месяца назад
Great to hear! Yes, you will have to unlearn a lot of the formal stuff to understand how Brazilians actually speak in the real world...but to be fair, this is how 99% of BR-PT courses teach it

Hi Andrew, thank you so much for your thorough videos. I have started the fsi course because of you. So far, I'm on unit 7 (gonna repeat it a few times before moving on). I was wondering if you have any tips for those working through the course? Also by the end of it, can I expect to be at a basic conversation fluency level at least? Or are my expectations too high? Lol
@DecodingWordswithAndrew
@DecodingWordswithAndrew 5 месяцев назад
Hey there! So like I mentioned in the video, the type of Portuguese that's taught in the course is a very formal, academic type of Portuguese (to be fair, most Portuguese courses out there are like this)...if you want to modernize the material, I'd suggest you find a Brazilian tutor or language partner who could help point out certain differences between what's taught in the course vs how people actually speak. Or you could just watch my videos since that's a huge part of what I talk about :) Other than that, I think it's a great idea that you're repeating the units several times to really absorb the material. Most people just want to rush through the course, but I think it's wise to just really master the material in each unit before moving on....so keep doing that. If you combine the FSI course, my videos, as well as conversation practice with Brazilians, basic conversational fluency is definitely possible...not easy, but doable. Hope that helps!

Hi and thanks for this. I have a question. Do you know about or have an opinion on using the FSI Familiarization And Short-Term Training (FAST) Brazilian Portuguese Course vs the full FSI Brazilian Portuguese Programmatic course? The FSI FAST courses seem similar to the longer Programmatic course but is shorter (30 lessons). The FAST material was created in the early 1990s but still part of the FSI language program. I am trying to decide between 3 options: the longer FSI Programmatic course; the FSI FAST course or Assimil. Any thoughts/suggestions? I am maybe an intermediate beginner so I have some grammar but stumble with speaking and listening comprehension.
@DecodingWordswithAndrew
@DecodingWordswithAndrew 10 месяцев назад
Hi there, no don't know anything about the FAST courses. I personally don't like Assimil, so I would just do the FSI. Just realize that either way you go, you'd be learning standard, academic Portuguese, which has significant differences from how people actually speak. I talk a lot about these differences on my channel.
@dharmony1378
@dharmony1378 10 месяцев назад
Thank you. I took a 2nd look at FAST and it appears to be solid material. its structure is similar to FSI focusing on drills to emphasize speaking; listening comprehension and tools to help your speaking intuitively and get you engaged quickly. I've used a Basic Portuguese grammar book to study and create my own materials for listening/speaking drills on specific grammar points. so, i'm a little reluctant to take on the full programmatic course. Thanks again, I've subscribed to your channel and will check out your videos to get the more current way of speaking. @@DecodingWordswithAndrew

I have a strategy that might work for Spanish, specifically spanish at the moment Im already learning German and Russian and im gonna try the fsi course for that as well Immersion- Latino version of south park apparantely its good? FSI course- For basic vocab Slang everyday language- Busuu Since your a experienced learner can you say if this is good or not thanks

Hey there! FSI programmatic Spanish is a great method so you can’t go wrong there. I don’t know anything about the other two so I can speak on them. In the beginning, I’d just focus on the FSI course, after maybe 3-6 months start slowly introducing content like graded readers, easy material that you’ll actually be able to understand at least 70% and then build up from there.

Would your recommend using FSI and Pimsleur at the same time?
@DecodingWordswithAndrew
@DecodingWordswithAndrew Год назад
No, I would recommend just picking the one you like the best and putting all your focus into it. I don’t think it’s a good idea to work on multiple courses at once…been there done that! The FSI course is way more intensive and comprehensive, but just pick the one you like more and get to work right away. Action at this point is 100x more important than anything else.
