Here in Canada, there aren't too many options when it comes to credit cards with no foreign transaction fees.
Most of our best credit cards levy a standard 2.5% FX fee on foreign purchases, which adds to your burdens when you're travelling abroad.

There is also the Home Trust Visa which is no fee and no fx. It wasn't a great card in the early days but it is passable now. Similar offer to brim with 1% back on everything and no FX.

Hi Ricky, Please consider including the following as part of your updated guide: 1. Does opening a USA Amex trigger any concerns on the Canadian side such as automatic closure of your cards (ex. AMEX thinking you will be in the USA only) 2. As part of the identity check from AMEX they ask to upload a passport etc. Does a foreign non-Canadian passport and/or PR card work for PR’s in Canada? 3. If applying through Nova Credit, they ask if you are currently in the USA or if not, when you are moving to the USA. How should we navigate this question if only residing in Canada with visits to the USA? Thank you so much for all that you do, love the vids!

I love to travel, so this is a must-watch video for me! I remember my first overseas vacation as a college student and was surprised to see the exchange rate fees hit my credit card bill. It’s great that there are now more options for travelers to take advantage of when spending abroad.

Great to see you mentionining some of the lesser-known cards like the brim financial MasterCard. By the way - was asking to cancel/downgrade after the first year and they waived the annual fee for the second year. Doesn't hurt to ask if you're in the same boat!

There's also Rogers MasterCard, us dollar purchases the cash back offsets the foreign transaction fee, same thing with Amazon credit card, also home trust visa has no foreign fx fees, all these cards have no annual fee

That's a great solution for withdrawing cash. We plan to move to Asia and was looking for ways to bring cash back, if the upper daily limit is not too low then this could be a great way to get larger sums of money to myself without going through bank wires and such. I used to always just get to a location and use local ATM network to take out local cash, there's a fee but I was told the local ATM's fx rates are actually better than FX places/banks.

It is worth noting that Visa and Mastercard both charges a 1% currency conversion network fee on top of the 2.5% foreign transaction fee charged by banks. No FX cards still has the 1% currency conversion fee charged by the payment network. AMEX's own cards do not have the extra 1% network fee.

for the scotia passport visa. if you open and keep $5000 in the ultimate package account, the annual fee is waived. but foreign purchases no longer get the 1% rebate.

Home Trust Preffered Visa. No annual fee. No exchange fees. No limit 1% back. I carry it and the Scotia Gold AmEx, but pay for everything using prepay options in CAD before I leave, so the big items have no FX charge. Mostly I use my AmEx platinum, so consierge can solve any problems.

I don’t understand this priority pass lounge system. For example, in Cabo Mexico, you have to show the Priority Pass card then you can use one of your credit cards for the discount price to enter??? So do I have to buy a Priority Pass card membership then use my American Express Gold through Scotiabank for a discount on the entry to the lounge? Seems weird and expensive down to the lounge??

I have amazon credit card, and eq bank debit card. They both dont have foreign exchange fees, so I think I am good. I wish to have a better one for points, but idk if its worth getting a card with a fee when I pay for everything on my cobalt, and its not that common when I get declined.

There is another comment about the same card below but note while it’s 0% FX, you no longer get 1% on foreign spend, just 1% in Canada. Better off with Brim unless you covet VISA over MC.

Decent for the No FX, but the rewards wouldn't be as strong as on one of the Chase or Amex rewards-earning cards.

Stack. AC Conversion Card still has FX fees, it's just embedded into the FX rate that you get whenever you convert between different currencies.

what happened to the HSBC world elite Mastercard its not on the prince of travel recommend no foreign transaction fee cards but in the video your saying its one to keep? I can't decide between the HSBC World Elite Mastercard, Scotia Passport, and TD infinite privilege when I am a high spender internationally --> university tuition that doesn't accept Amex :(

Unfortunately the HSBC card has been closed to new applicants. HSBC is being acquired by RBC. Existing cardholders are able to enjoy the benefits of the card for now. The Scotia Passport sounds like a great option for you, and they currently have an excellent first year free offer.

Rather weak I must say with their recent changes, in which only USD purchases are compensated with a higher earning rate now, and other foreign transactions are excluded

Personally, no - because there's no reason for them to get rid of a source of revenue on a card where FX fees aren't a differentiating factor (less so than lounge access, hotel benefits, etc.)

They sure do much more interesting options. I would say it's just much more competition in market than our market where all major banks acquire all smaller ones that get any significant amount of customers.
