I don't understand the routine BJ is suggesting-do I do 3" straight of triceps then go to biceps, etc, or do as many reps as possible then go to the next exercise and so on and keep going for 3", take a break, then do it again?

I’d like to add one to the list, rotational chest press. Start off with elbows to your side, neutral grip, and push/twist into a typical overhand position at the top, rotate down back into neutral grip. Explode on the way up, nice slow and controlled on the way down. Very good for getting more explosion in your straight punches.

I prefer pull ups for arms strength I’ll only use very light dumbbells for shadow boxing and to add weight for holding my arms straight out at the sides making small circles for as long as I can to build shoulder strength. I’ll do heavy squats very low reps and tuns of body weight squats and lunges for leg strength

Always pinch your shoulder blades together when doing these, It stops you in every movement from hurting your shoulders. Plus you dont gotta follow the 3 minutes but its pretty great. And heavy doesnt mean better. High rep low weight really gets a pump happening and i dont care what the studies say i as a lean man have always built faster with HR LW plus you get those ripped lines in your shoulders and massive horse shoes on the triceps

No disrespect to the fitness guy, but it seems he thinks that the strength of the punches come from the arms. It would be best to do workouts that involve the twisting of the core, hips and shoulders, like Russian Twists, Ball to Walls, etc. Boxing Science channel here on RU-vid and other Boxing/Combat Sports workout channels (Phil Daru among others) have a better grasp for the right program for Boxing or Combat Sports.

I actually agree with your general point, although at the top level, upper body strength is very important. Take a sport like badminton or tennis - all the pros have amazing weight transfer so having a conditioned upper body might give them that last bit of power in each stroke. If a beginner still focuses on weight transfer, there’s no reason not to work on upper body strength as long as the balance between power from the legs and upper body is maintained in execution.
@kevinsharp5602
@kevinsharp5602 Год назад
Exactly right, I've actually been doing this type of workout on and off in my workouts for years but never with heavy weights like he's using no more than three to five pounds Max and I got this workout from Jeff finnick and it's tremendous on building endurance in your muscles but not with a heavy dumbbell that's only going to end in eventually slow your punches down that's too much weight never exceed 5 lb
@koztah
@koztah Год назад
Coming from a longtime strength training background and having started boxing six months ago, I can say the movement that most resembles throwing a punch (to me) is the Kroc row - which is basically a "cheat" dumbbell row usually used to train your grip: it's like a regular dumbbell row but you pull the heaviest dumbbell you can up with your whole body/hips/lats/legs for 20-30 reps. I wasn't able to punch hard until I figured that out. The explosive pull on one side launches the opposite hand pretty fast if you apply it in boxing stance. Power through the ground and hips comes automatically from focusing on the pull. That's what worked for me anyway.

If you are into this kind of sport it should be clear that ONLY this workout don't make you a good fighter. I think it is a good workout for getting better in don't get tired arms during a fight, and thats what he said in the beginning. Not more, Not less...

I've been doing boxing only for the past six months or so (religiously, 5-6 times a week). I come from 25+ years of striking martial arts experience so it's not super foreign but I have been noticing some major differences in body mechanics, or stress on certain areas. I also have spent years doing the three main forms of resistance training (power/strength, hypertrophy, and stamina/endurance). However, boxing has been proving a large learning curve (having to deconstruct muay thai and karate stance/techniques before re-learning boxing technique). So, I have not been lifting any weights, and just focusing on technique and stamina/cardio. Muscle tightness is a huge factor with boxing since it has fairly limited movements and striking techniques. This does not make it easy one bit though! That is for sure. In any case, I just wanted to note that I have noticed my biceps extremely sore after sessions. I thought this at first was due to hooks etc. on the heavy bag but also noticed it after low impact days (basically footwork and shadow boxing days). I realized that it was the retraction of the punches. In muay thai, the focus is kicks, or in the very least/most balanced you spread your strikes thrown throughout 8 impact zones. Boxing is two only, so the volume of those strikes is very high. Sorry for the novel associated to my two cents. Take from it what you will!

Mike Tyson never lifted weights during his professional career. Hell he only did calisthenic pushing exercises. 400 bench dips, 400 push ups, 400 push ups, 400 shoulder shrugs, 2500 declining sit ups, jogging 3-5 miles, 10 rounds of sparring, 4-6 hours of speed bag work, 30-45 minutes jumping rope, daily for 6 weeks before a fight. Quiet frankly the only heavyweight champ I can think of that lifted weights was Evander Holyfield and a lot of people accused him of steroid abuse in that time because he went from 175 to 215 in a year.

Is this correct and the best way to lift weights for boxing ????? Great video as always Tony mate

Welldone Tony, another Xellent Vid. Glad I watched this, as it my daily routine, wasnt sure how i was doing. But now know, what I,m doing is exactly this, only, I tend to do, 2 larger sets with perhps slightly less weight. I'm nearly 58, love me Boxing back in the day and do this 6 days a weekto keep me sharp. So no Xcuses Guys. Get on.

I would add one tip that I incorperate, and that is, when doing the Bicep Curl, I always adopt my Boxing stance as this better replicates lifting tired arms and maintaining your Boxing Stance when tired. ;)

I’ve tested burpees with 10 kilos dumbbell in each hand with jump. Really demanding exercise, I’m 62.5 kilos.
