One most important thing i would like to point out that u kept mentioning in the video is: you DO NOT have to do DAILY water rinses when doing the water only method. U can customize that to your liking as well, especially after you reach full sebum coverage. Anyways, I'm glad you are doing videos on this, sebum is truly the best "product" for our hair, and isn't "disgusting" at all. The same way shea butter makes my hair feel, and my hair LOVES shea butter, that's the way my sebum made my hair feel. Ppl complaining about how expensive products for natural hair is getting, shoot we have a "product" coming out of our scalp that's free. Honestly, I think this "method", is for EVERYONE, but not everyone is willing to put in the time for it. Just like going natural from relaxers is for everyone, but not everyone is willing to go natural.
@nowfuture9330
@nowfuture9330 8 лет назад
It's not that people aren't willing to put in the time and effort, because I know that I myself have. Nonetheless, I have not had great results with the method in even getting TO the sebum for full coverage. I've watched other videos where people who gave the method an honest try, for a good amount of time, did not achieve beneficial results. I agree that what our body naturally produces in the form of sebum is supreme for our strands, but getting it to coat the entire of our strands, for what we call 4C hair, seems nearly impossible for many. Being that our hair coils, zig zags, and just refuses to hang, I wonder if the sebum was even MEANT to travel the length of our kinky strands? By design, maybe it's meant to travel just enough to maintain a certain length since the texture of our hair is designed for function in combating the suns penetrating rays in a very hot climate, basically. I would think that long tresses is not conducive to keeping cool in hot climates. Yet, the ultimate aim for the majority of us in engaging in all of these various methods, hair products, no product, protective styling, eliminating shrinkage, and such things is to grow long and thick hair. Anyway, I have experienced severe breakage in attempting this water method. I'm not going back to that since my hair has recovered in utilizing another health maintenance process. Unless, there is a variation of the method that sounds like it's worth giving it a shot. I"m amazed when I hear people say they are producing sebum in abundance! 4C, that is. May I ask, what your hair maintenance regimen is? If you utilize some variation of the water only method? It might be helpful to others.
@byoung4eva1
@byoung4eva1 8 лет назад
Now Future I think that, no matter the texture, our sebum was meant to reach full coverage, but for some of us, that may take a while. I think it took me 3 weeks, of rinsing my hair, at night only, for me to have full coverage. I put my hair in two strand twists. Later i wore it out, and water rinsed whenever i felt like it. I still believe not everyone is willing to put in the effort, including patience for sebum coverage, not to offend anyone, but it may take me 3 weeks, and someone else 3 months. It all depends on the purpose. Honestly, I think it's worth it. It saves money, and helps u to truly get to know the feel of your hair, whether it's actually dry or "feels dry" (what we call anything that's not soft), and just understand your hair in general. I won a giveaway some months ago, randomly, so i've stopped the method, but will be going back to it, when all the products i won get used up

Now Future I am 4bc and I produce quite a bit of sebum. Eating nuts,meat,eggs and fatty foods increases sebum production. Sebum can be supplemented with jojoba oil,shea butter or an oil of your liking. The oil must be applied almost daily along with water to prevent breakage. I use rice water for breakage if needed. I have been doing "water only" for 6 months.

Be aware of how hard your tap water is. The excess minerals will make your sebum thick, white, waxy, and tough. A distilled water rinse will fix this problem for you. There are no minerals in it, and so removes the minerals in your tap from your hair. This makes full coverage many times easier to obtain, as it make your HAIR soft as well as your sebum!!

Call Me Swivel Hips - wow thanks. I thought I was low sebum producer, so its cos my boiled kettle water still retain some minerals thus sebum not travel as easily hmmmm this is sure a continual learning. And I read sooo much before committing to this regimen 7 months ago. I guess you can only understand some things better with experience

It just dawned on me, after watching this video repeatedly, that my boys maintain such beautiful hair because their hair reaches full sebum coverage quickly. A sign they need a hair cut is when they don’t have full coverage quick enough after a wash. We do keep them in a low cut because I prefer their easy to maintain waves. When they are older I hope they’ll want to grow their stands long. Thanks to @greenbeauty I’ll be ready. I’m

I’m very late with this video. Long post: But today on my wash day I noticed something. I call this a lazy wash day. Usually I let my hair dry before doing LCO. But on lazy wash days I don’t do LCO. Typically I let my hair dry in 6 twist. My hair at this point feels very dry and rough. Then when it’s mostly dry/lightly damp, I twist it in to 12-14 twists. (Low density hair) I realize that when I go in to twist the smaller section it’s much softer especially closer to my roots (again no products just freshly washed hair). This video Literally explained why that’s happening omg. I’m thankful for this vid and I’m definitely intrigued by this 100% sebum coverage journey. Just can’t do water only because I love good artificial perfume smelling hair lol

Thanks so much for this follow up to your experience with WOHW. With your good advice of oiling your strands while waiting for TSC, would you consider doing it again? Cos then we won’t see the dryness? The WOHW lady had long hair too and achieved TSC. She did it for longer though. I would really like to see your total experience of it, cos I know you would do it better than most of us watchers and document it. Anybody else want GB to revisit WOHW with her hair?

Stop using all products except distilled water. The sebum will build up, and the distilled water rinses will remove mineral build up from hard water deposits. That will make it much much easier for the sebum to slide down your strands without assistance, and will soften your hair. And yes, eat fatty foods.

some things you can do to increase your sebum production: Massage the scalp regularly, ghe method(green house method), inverting your head during rinsing (can also be done outside of the shower), increasing the fat intake (healthy fat is preferable), fish oil, flaxseed oil, flaxseed meal, chia seeds, nuts, seeds. @GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 8 лет назад
It's best to let your scalp regulate itself. If you are having issues with pH and your scalp is flaking. Add some drops of Pure Tea Tree Oil in some portioned out shampoo before using it. And use this mixture to wash your hair on wash day. The antifungal properties will help kill whatever has grown on your scalp due to the imbalanced pH issue. Also, massage your scalp for a few minute on a daily basis. This is help stimulate the blood circulation on your scalp which will help your scalp fix itself. I hope this helps.

My hair became high porosity after bleaching it, and I know that it's good to incorporate some protein into your hair regime in a high porosity state. However, because I'm experiencing the protein overload, I don't want to go ANYWHERE NEAR hair products with protein in it just yet. I'm trying to focus on getting the moisture back into it! What should I do? How often shoudl I be washing/co-washing my hair? Can you recommend any specific product? PLEASE HELP!!!! FYI: My hair is super dry, super brittle, super sensitive to the touch, and so it breaks off easily. I keep it super short, so the broken parts are not so noticable. AGAIN, PLEASE HELP!!!
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 7 лет назад
Thanks ! The only way to get rid of protein overload is to clarify your hair with a strong clarifying shampoo. You can find one, in any grocery store. Just make sure you follow it immediately with a deep moisturizing treatment. The clarifying shampoo will be able to remove all the protein build-up on your hair, wipe the slate clean. On your next wash day, do a GreenBeauty REAL Protein Treatment. It's a better protein treatment b/c its molecules are very small so, it can penetrate and coat your hair to strengthen it without building up too much. It also leaves your hair super soft and flexible. It will not get rid of all the beach damage, nothing can. But, it will help patch up damaged areas along your hair strands enough to stop the excessive break. I hope this helps

HI, I wanted to know if you could give me some advice on what's going on with my hair. For the past three months I've been having major hair breakage at first it was medium but now its to the point where when I wash my hair it feels really gummy and comes out in huge clumps however when its dry its feels brittle and dry. I tried washing my hair with a clarifying shampoo but that didn't help much. Now I'm to the point where I cant even wash my hair because it will come out in clumps. A lot of people are telling to cut my hair but I feel like it wont help because the rest of my hair will still feel the same way but it will just be shorter. Do you know what I can do that can stop this breakage?
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 8 лет назад
I'm so sorry to hear that. If your hair is falling out in clumps, it's almost impossible for me to know why unless I have a lot more information. I suggest you go to a dermatologist about this. Perhaps she can run some test and get a better understanding on your health and what's going on. I hope you speak to a doctor sooner rather than later.

Use Apple cider vinegar mixed with equal part of water to clarify your hair. Don't add any other product to your hair. Depending on the length of your hair you may need to add shea butter to your ends of hair, after braiding or twisting your hair to prevent breakage.

Product build up makes your hair look and feel a lot differently than sebum coverage. Sebum coverage is not oily, and your hair looks shiny. But, with product buildup, your hair looks dull and feels greasy. Twist outs also look really nice with sebum coverage, while with product build up twist outs may not lay right. After experiencing full sebum coverage you will definitely be able to tell the difference between sebum coverage and product buildup.

thanks for such a thorough explanation. When I scratch my scalp, I usually see a thickish off white substance under my finger nails. Is that sebum or product buildup ? I often use shea butter on my hair so I'm not exactly sure. Thanks again for your helpful videos! :)

Taylor Brown - was just thinking same, when it covers, how long does it stay? Does it then wait around all 7/8 weeks till it gets clarified off OR does it wear off/wear down somehow? Store products build up in our hair but don't retain moisturising properties throughout do they? Wondering if sebum does same ?

What does sebum look like? This is the first I’ve ever even heard of it. And this whole time I’m thinking that it’s dry scalp. Help!

It’s hard to see it b/c it should be clear. But, you can definitely feel it. Massage your scalp for a little bit … that sticky feeling on your fingers is sebum

I've been trying the water only method for roughly 1 1/2 months. No shampoo and only put olive oil on hair. The other day I did a water wash and it left my hair grey! Lol. No joke. So today I had to reluctantly shampoo because not only was it grey but I had bad dandruff too. So, I'm guessing that was the sebum build up?.. The last time it happened I realised it was the coconut oil I was using so I stopped using it. But it's happened again and now I'm thinking water only may not be for me.. although I really want it to be. I will persevere and try other methods as I'm determined to be shampoo free ( strips my hair bad) soapnuts.. apple cider... Natural soap....any suggestions are welcome. Thanks X

Yup same exact thing happened to me when I tried water washing. I produce too much sebum to follow that method out right and my scalp never balanced out so I was walking around with dusty looking hair. What I do now is shampoo as needed and not on a schedule. When my hair starts to look dull I shampoo. I still water wash daily and bring the sebum down my strands with my hands or brush. I don't use standard shampoo but a shampoo bar made by 22nd Century Natural Woman. Look her up here on RU-vid. This bar does not strip the hair but lightly removes the excess sebum but it somehow makes the hair really clean from dirt and gunk. It's awesome! Of all of her products that bar gets the best reviews. Don't give up on water washing just modify it a bit to work for you.

That’s probably the sebum but you don’t have to use shampoo you can do an oil rinse, it dissolves some of the sebum and leaves hair shiny again

What about sebum over-production?....my scalp produces too much sebum leading to oily hair and scalp makes my scalp visible as I have scanty hair..... also my scalp is not porous and hence the scalp just remains on the top

so when do you wash your hair? wouldn't washing remove all the sebum?
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 8 лет назад
Warm water only washes will not remove the sebum, it will actually help slide the sebum down the length of you hair.
@onjeinika
@onjeinika 8 лет назад
I agree. I do warm water only rinses sometimes. I just rub my scalp well and detangle and let the sebum do the rest. No products. Then the next wash I do is a cleansing one because sebum can build up on my scalp quickly. I cleanse with a gentle shampoo bar or a non sulfate one like Kinky curly Not today. They cleanse but do not dry out my hair and scalp.

Will oiling your scalp block sebum? I just recently tried making basil oil and using it on my scalp after a wash...or should I wait and give the sebum a chance and use the oil only afterward? Sebum cakes on my scalp like crazy...like, I can peel it off. So I never know when to oil or not

i really want to try this method... the only thing that annoys me is the shrinkage... i keep my hair braided/cornrowed all the time (no extensions) because i don't want to detangle and clean my hair every other day when i need to wash/rinse it... can you do this preening business on braided hair or is it enough to do it on unbraided hair once a week or so?
@user-zc5yk5qu2y

have you ever tried washing your hair in small sections? my hair is neck length and I wash once a week. each time I keep them in twists before and then while rinsing one section with water I braid it up at the same time so it doesn't shrink..
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 8 лет назад
If your natural hair is in braids or twist, you can undo one, sritch and preen that section and put it back into the twist or braid. You don't have to do this every day either; you can doing it at least twice a week.

+Green Beauty Channel ™ hello! thank you so much for your reply! I've been doing that for now and i can already feel the difference! before twisting I scritch and preen my hair (after finger detangling, which is getting easier and easier) then i twist and plait them down! i wear a scarf all the time so the heat is trapped under there, i think it helps! So far I feel like the sebum is almost to the tip of my hair, i can't wait till it's fully coated! my hair is not nearly as dry as it was, and so much definition 😍 I'm a WoW girl now lol thank you for your wonderful videos!

+치즈.다이몬드 i do try to wash it in small sections but it takes a while and i get so cold in the shower lol my trick these past few days has just been to use a spray bottle out of the shower before i go in... i spray my hair,scritch and preen, twist it back and rinse it in the shower! i use aloe vera gel, ACV and oat water (which is just loads of water boiled with a tablespoon of rolled oats then blended and filtered) as my "shampoo"in the spray, idk where i saw the oat water tip (maybe a vintage book or the internet ) but it works well for me, my hair is clean and soft after! thanks for the sections tip, i was lazy about undoing and rebraiding my hair but it doesn't really take that long and it's worth it! i still need to wash/rinse my hair often, but this i do once a week outside of that and it feels great, i can feel the sebum coating my hair already!

Hey Kat, it depends on may factors like the length of your hair, how often you sritch and preen and how much sebum you produce. Health is indeed a major factor but, eating bad and being unhealthy can sometimes cause people to produce too much sebum. Hence why some unhealthy people break out a lot. Also as mentioned in the video sritching and preening your scalp and hair after a workout helps the sebum slide down faster. When I tried it for the second time, I first clarified my hair with a clarifying shampoo, coated my hair with some oil. I sritched and preened my hair and scalp every other day or so with a little oil. I started doing water only rinses with warm water after the first week and a half and did it every three to four days. With this regimen I got FULL coverage after 3 to 4 weeks.

@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 7 лет назад
If you have straight hair, get a high-quality BBB brush. Use it once every two to three days. Starting from your roots/scalp, brush the length of your hair to help smooth out the sebum build-up. This way the sebum will coat your hair more evenly and make your hair look more healthy and shiny rather than weighed down and oily. Additionally, you can also try rinsing your hair with warm water in the shower every day. If you have kinky textured hair, give yourself scalp quick 1 to 2 min messages, scritch your scalp and preen the oil down the length of your hair. This will help the sebum coat your hair more evenly so it helps keep your shiny and less frizzy.

GreenBeauty I’m now obsessed with your channel because your videos have taught me so much! I have kinky hair (type 4 God knows what) that’s highly porous naturally and fine. I think I’m producing too much sebum where my hair is thinner (front & edges) after I started taking biotin. These areas keep making thick scales on my scalp that flake off. I’ve stopped taking the supplements and I’m trying the S&P method but it’s difficult to work around the scales because the more they fall off the more hair I lose which happens when I scritch. I’m also washing my scalp twice a week using a shampoo that contain 2 percent ketoconazole with some drops of tea tree oil to it which is annoyingly drying my hair out now even though I pre poo and DC. Any advice on what I can do???

I have a question I did the hot oil treatment thing to my hair Bc of this video I watched but they said wash it out when you do it but why would you do that ? I didn't wash it out Bc that didn't make sense but are you suppose to wash it out ?
@TracyD2
@TracyD2 8 лет назад
Yes I would. Some oils aren't beneficial to keep in for a long period of time. It will clog your scalp and can cause hair loss over time. It does depend on the oils you use. I'm not sure which are good to keep on your scalp and which aren't. I know coconut oil should be rinsed out after awhile. Maybe someone can answer that better.
@yada4tube

You don't have to.. I do a hot oil treatment w/ coconut oil and I don't wash it out but I only use a little bit... And. Don't heat it in the microwave!! Use hot water!!!
@TimeraB
@TimeraB 8 лет назад
+yada4tube why can't it be heated In a microwave?
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 8 лет назад
It depends on if the hot oil treatment is organic or not. If it is like the Green Beauty Herbal Hot Oil Treatment, your instructed to lightly rinse out the excess so you don't walk around with oily hair. While processing the treatment (shower cap, steam ect.) your hair soaks up what it needs so keeping all that oil on your hair will only make it get dirty faster. So, don't 'wash' out an organic herbal hot oil treatment light rinse the excess. I hope this makes sense :-)
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 8 лет назад
B/c overheating any organic ingredient(s) will destroy a lot of its properties. Think of it like vegetables, the more you cook it the less nutrients it has. So, to heat up an organic herbal hot oil treatment, heat the water separately in the microwave or stove and place the portioned out oil you want to use in the hot/warm water. This will heat up the treatment more gradually and preserve a lot of its properties. I hope this helps :-)
