Leg Lymphedema is common, but not very well understood by doctors. That makes it difficult to get proper treatment. So as a certified lymphedema therapist, in this video I explain the best way to treat leg lymphedema and swelling.

Because of you Kelly, I quit drinking alcohol. There’s no post-surgical reason for my lower extremity lymphedema nor any cardiac, respiratory, or renal issues. All of your methods helped acutely yet the edema always returned. I know your methods aren’t curative so no problem, they are palliative. And they work!!! But something had to change and alcohol was it. In 3 days my edema abated. I have been alcohol free for three months now and besides all the other benefits, my edema has not returned. So thanks to you Kelly, you helped me rule out all other problems.

You mentioned alcohol consumption - have you also been supplementing with B-vitamins? Thiamine is especially important because your liver uses it to help with processing the alcohol, and even when you're replete with thiamine, there's a finite amount available that can be used up quickly if your body is stressed. I've found thiamine to be very helpful with my lower leg edema issues.

Thank You for this video. I'm in my 70's and just diagnosed with moderate lympedema thru my podiatrist. I'm kind of depressed about it and want to really educate myself with the best hope. Really glad I came across your posting. I'm not near a pool, so I use my rebounder, do some walking and now a elliptical machine. Plus I'm currently on a Ketovore diet, mostly carnivore. My legs feel really good when I have lots of meat. Again, thank you. 🎉

The leg wrapping is how I taught polo wraps on horses! 😊 Seriously, so relieved to have come across your post. Mastectomy (R) surgery in two days; lymph nodes in underarm to be removed. I understand that lymphedema is a very common side effect and I will need to take precautions by being careful and prepared ….like, forever! Thanks for sharing this informative post. I believe I watched your lymphatic video for arms and hands so I will find it again. I’ve been resourcing cancer since my first diagnosis in 2020. You are the most helpful by far…explaining why and how in layman’s logic is so important! ❤

l also used polo wraps on my horses to help reduce swelling , especially for injuries or long periods in the trailer. The most important part of wrapping is not to get the wraps too tight causing “ cording”, which can occur in human tissues as well.

Huh. The lymphatic drainage movement looks like the oil massage I do for some friends. One of them has swollen legs and it helps her. Tip: buy a jar of organic coconut oil at the supermarket, the type that you can use for cooking. It's convenient because it's solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature, so you can scoop out a solid bit with a spoon and it melts only on the skin instead of dripping everywhere. It's much cheaper than specialized massage oils, smells nice but not too strong, heats up comfortably as you do the massage, hydrates the skin, and you can use the rest for cooking.

My mother had right side mastectomy for breast cancer 5 months back . 2 days back she had a slip and fall and sustained a distal radial bone fracture on the right wrist and now have her arm immobilised below the elbow. We are worried about her now having a higher chance of getting lymphedema because of the injury and the immobilisation. She was very actively following the exercises from your channel prior to the injury. I wanted to help her out and put her at ease but don't know how. It seems her right arm will remain in a cast for upto 6 weeks . She has been in pain for almost 10 months with a the chemo , surgery and radiation and chemo again . I want her to just be pain free and not disabled so she can be happy again. Even if her right arm become edematous is it possible to bring her arm back to normal again with your technique and exercises? Thank you so much for all these valuable free content which am sure is helping plenty of people like my mother.

I just found your channel and subscribed. I have had primary lymphedema in my left leg since having a hysterectomy in 2011. I had uterine cancer and after the doctor removed 10 lymph nodes on both sides, no cancer had spread but I developed lymphedema. I have a book on this condition with foods to eat or eliminate. I wore compression socks for years faithfully until about 3 or 4 years ago when the top of the sock was so tight below my knee that it was just too painful to wear. I have to say I don't always avoid the foods that probably cause more swelling but I keep on trying. I just recently bought a Power Plate Move. What is your opinion on that? I sure hope it will help considering what I paid. I have the Tactile wrapping massaging system I used for years too but have not used it in a while, just inconvenient to wrap by myself.

Kelly, I developed Lymphedema as a result of being hit by a car. I was hurt very, very bad including a grade 3a tibia/fibula fracture. This led to Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome and this didn't get diagnosed for almost 4 years. I was never able to find a Physical Therapist who was knowledgeable about this or the Lymphedema I began to develop. Will you help me learn to properly wrap my legs? Both legs have become huge and despite my saying Lasix is contraindicated, my Doctors do nothing else. In the past, when I was going to UCLA, Lymphatic Massage was prescribed but I couldn't find a Therapist who was only slightly knowledgeable but didn't know about wrapping or proper compression. Please send me a notification or message or email. I don't care about the cost. Pierce. P. S- your RU-vid station to which I've subscribed is the very best. Pierce

I underwent a liposuction/ de-bulking surgery in my left upper and lower leg. The surgery was performed by Dr. Wei Chen at the Cleveland Clinic. This far i have seen great results in terms of smaller limb size and new lymphatic vessel regeneration visualized through indocyanine green lymphography. He also performs lymphovenous anastomoses (LVA), basically a lymphatic bypass either in the legs or arms (depending on the affected limb). I haven’t had the LVA yet, so I can’t speak to much about the outcomes of the surgery, but from what I’ve heard that he has “cured” many patients from their lymphedema through his surgeries.

Can you please give s simple plan what to do at home for those of us who have had canckles and thick calves all our lives no matter our weight? But not enough to see a doctor? I notice such a dent after a day of wearing socks with a tight band that I now suspect oedema to be the problem. Also, when I was pregnant my legs and ankles swelled to much. And if my thick, heavy legs ARE a kind of mild oedema that ive had all my life, an affliction that just never has been identified as such Where to go if I just have this suspicion? Again, my doc would probably just say: if it IS oedema, it isn't bad enough to treat. ...so keep buying extra extra wide boots and hiding legs and ankles and just feeling so heavy and tired in my legs.

I had lymphedema in my leg. I injured my leg in an accident. Then I noticed my shoe was filling up with fluid . I couldn’t figure out what was happening. Then I saw that it was coming from a tiny little scratch on my leg. It drained my whole leg. It has been about 1 1/2 years and the lymphedema still hasn’t come back the way it was. I don’t know why doctors don’t just do this type of a drain?
@AndreaGerakSinger
@AndreaGerakSinger 2 месяца назад
What?! 😮 Maybe you have found the key to lymphedema?? That would be sooooo terrific!!! Lymph oozing through the skin is considered to be a very unpleasant side effect of lymphedema and it's indeed a pain in the a$$, so we are told to stop it by all means possible. With pads, towels, compression and what not, it normally takes 2 or 3 days. I also know this from experience. And I found a special gel that stops it within minutes or hours. But maybe I should take a few days when I don't go out of the house and try this drain and see what happens. Could you please tell us more about it? How long did that take? Did you use anything to absorb the fluid, or just let it flow and dried it every now and then? If you prefer, you can also write me privately, just google my name and choose a platform. Thanks! 🌷
@monroe1258
@monroe1258 Месяц назад
@@AndreaGerakSinger it would be great if this was a solution! A concern I may point out is could the " draining" leave an opening for infection to enter the body through the open lymph system? ( I do not know, and would love to see if draining works, but I would ask a Dr or Google the risks of encouraging a drain)
@sarcasticcat4982
@sarcasticcat4982 Месяц назад
@@AndreaGerakSingera shunt would work. "Shunt procedures can address pressure on the brain caused by hydrocephalus and relieve its symptoms such as gait difficulty, mild dementia and lack of bladder control. If the doctor finds that these problems improve after a lumbar puncture, it may mean that placing a shunt may be able to provide a longer-term benefit." It's basically a capped off tube in a particular place.

Is there any way to avoid the wraps? I was recently diagnosed with lipo-lymphedema and have my first appointment with a lymphedema specialist. The wraps look like they will impede my ability to work and, if I don’t work, I don’t get paid. I have no support system in my area. Plus, the only exercise I will do is swimming and I can’t do that in the wraps. I am hoping compression wear and a pneumatic compression device will do the job. I already got a dry brush and am looking forward to learning about how that works.

Here is a hack I invented for the exact same problem. My difficult area was my inner knee just below the bend on both sides. The outer aspect seemed OK & did not roll down like the inside, so I only treated the insides. I used Viva paper towels for this because the surface clings to itself & to your hose. For me I use: 2 sections of towel equalling 12”. Fold into 3“ increments so you get a band of 12 X 3 inches. Put hose on where it should go, even if it won’t stay. I start at the middle of back of knee below bend . Pull hose away from leg & begin to tuck the Three inch Viva band carefully between hose & leg around leg circumference, allowing top band of hose to “grab” Viva band & hold it in place as you work around alternatively pulling away hose, tucking Viva , & moving to next area allowing hose to hold everything in place until you get to the end. The kicker: do not allow wrinkles , bumps, or kick, because it will put too much pressure on one sm place & hurt after a while, 2. The Viva band must extend half “ or quarter “ past top of hose for comfort & to work right. This process does take patience & practice, but once you are good at it, it will keep your hose from rolling down & it will be much more comfortable to wear. I do this nearly every day. I can’t afford new hose & mine are all stretched out on top. If your edema is worse than mine & you need to go all the way around leg, I suggest two bands & allowing them to smoothly overlap at least an inch or more in back & front. One long one to tuck is just too difficult. If you are an extreme case , you might need your band 3.5 to 4 inches wide. It will be more difficult to tuck & you may ( probably) need help. Why it works. I believe if my hose band at the top was a lot wider I would not have this problem. The inner knee tissue is very soft , kind of fluffy & indents easily from the pressure of the hose band. The Vice gently compresses a 3 “ area & then when the hose is applied it doesn’t dig in one place deeply with the puffy fat allowing it to roll. I have tried all kinds of ways & nothing works as good as this. It stays perfect all day long. Adapt to your own situation, but it has been a Godsend to me, but does take practice till you get it down pat. Good luck.

Hyperbaric Oxygen ( HBO ) Therapy is another way to use on Lymphedema. True it is not cheap and insurance will fight to pay for it! Why do i suggest it you ask???? Because the human body and other mammals can be subjected to ( gradually ) pressure to force out moisture of its cells! Notice the difference when dive into a deep end of a pool and try to come up to the surface in a sudden rush for air. Depending on how you dive down, you get the " BENDS "; a condition that nitrogen saturation that pressurize your cells that until that adjust to from the water weight ( medium ) after a dive. You do not have to take my word on this subject... just anybody who a deep sea diver or anyone who specializes in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Also get a doctor's recommendation to get it done. You notice and feel the difference. Anyway, good luck on the health recovery!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
