I'm Jamaican. I initially give it a very quick washing to remove any dirt. Then I boil it and sometimes blend it. Do not throw away anything when boiling it.
I have found that if you boil it on medium heat for a short period of time, because it doesn’t take it long to began to melt, and then let it cool and blend it… It last wayyyy longer in the fridge than the none boiled method. So it will not mold quick. It will last longer than a month, probably closer to two months. But I don’t let it boil i let it warm up and stir until it’s practically melted, let it cool and then blent and it lasts so much longer🤷🏽♀️
I’m from Trinidad and Tobago. Initially I tried soaking our local sea moss and it did not gel up. Upon further investigation I was told that our sea moss is more fibrous therefore you have to boil it. Additionally, heat does not kill minerals and nutrients.
Our seamoss is much more firm for sure. You need a really strong blender if u wanna use it raw, like a vitamix blender or a really strong nutribullet, etc.
I'm also from Trinidad 🇹🇹 and we boil it here, it can last months in the refrigerator, I just finished using mine that has been stored over 2 months in refrigerator...same great taste, love the smooth texture and consistency....
I soak the seamoss overnight in water with some lime or lemon juice, this helps cuts any scent. This helps to soften up the seamoss. I then boil the seamoss with about a cup of water and use a swizzle stick, the seamoss gets really smooth and consistent. This mixture is then poured into a mason jar, it thickens up even before going into the refrigerator. Boiling will help extract nutrients and minerals that your body may not be able to break down and by pouring everything into the mason jar, you def lose nothing.
Hi; because Irish Moss is a DEMULCENT to epithelial cells , it moves waste matter in the intestines and the gas you’re experiencing is likely due to blockages in the intestines that it’s causing to move, and eventually pass. If you experience additional issues with gas, you may want to wean-off of the milk products, since its pH is acidic. Best 2U, and thanks for sharing!
You can do something in the middle. After you thoroughly rinsed it soak it in spring water for 24 hours and then pour the water you soaked it in in the pot and just barely warm that water up. And then pour that hot water in the blender with the sea moss and blend it all up period it Blends better when the water is hot. And it pours out the blender easier.
Hello from London UK 🇬🇧 apologies for my late arrival to this party. For my method I decided to compromise and after thoroughly washing my seamoss, I cover it in boiling water (so that any precious element that is heat sensitive was bruised rather than destroyed). Once cooled down I leave it to soak overnight and blend until smooth the next day. That's what I've been doing for around 3yrs now. My Jamaican mum used to boil it for 20-30mins, but she would strain the seamoss - separating the moss from the liquid - and use it a further 2 more times then discard. She never blended the actual seamoss and liquid together
I first wash the Seamoss in a basic water. Then I soak it in Spring water, allowing it to swell and soften. I Then cut it up for better blending, and use the water it was soaked in to use those minerals. Add the water gradually to blend until it looks like apple sauce. And allow to chill in the fridge. You'll right if you boil the nutrients will be in the water. And there are nutrients in the soaking water as well. I forgot to say that the soaked Seamoss will swell and feel like cooked noodle,, not overcooked ones.
If it’s porridge you can boil it if not no need to boil flaxseed when boiled will be thick and stretchy. You can add sea moss to it without boiling to make a drink. I boiled my sea moss after blending and refrigerate. It thickened on its own when I boiled it. CAUTION too much water will water it down. People are making things more complicated than it needs to be. It simply depends on what you’re doing with it.

I Soak my sea moss for 24 hours. Then I clean it. I boil water to a rapid boil. Then I drop my sea moss in the pot. Then turn off the stove or range. Put a lid on the pot. The heat will finish the job once it cools. You can store just like that, it will be ropey. Or you can blend it. Either way keep the water. Refrigerate your Sea Moss Gel, use as needed. 😋 1- cup of sea moss gel 3- cups of Almond milk or any kind of milk 1- teaspoon vanilla extract 1- teaspoon almond extract 1 & 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Honey Sweetened to taste. Blend for 4-5 minutes Start low then increase speed. You can add fruit for a fruity flavor.
Good morning. I just met your video. Great job What I noticed about the boiled one, is that it gets more firm after refrigerating it. The one that's not boiled, after refrigerating, I scoop it up and it's much softer. Nevertheless, my sister sells bottles of them and she doesn't boil it. Her customers says it more healthier and beneficial not boiled.
Trinidad here we soak the seamoss overnight wash it and put it to boil for about 20 minutes. We usually put in a bayleaf or a spanish thyme leaf so it does not smell fresh
Thank you for sharing. I’ve been hearing so many different techniques since I made this video! I’ve personally continued to soak it overnight in cold spring water and some lemons when I make my gel.
This is quite helpful than my sceptic mind initially thought it would. I was going to throw the water away but thought surely that defeats the object of the benefits Seamoss has to offer. Thank you for clarifying this. Please, could you tell me in your experience of Seamoss, is it necessary to soak it with lime or lemon? Why the need for this part? Thanks, I’m a first time Seamoss user, just received it today.
No problem. You don't have to use lemon or lime but they help with the taste and with the cleansing of any dirt and residue from the leaves. You can use lemon on it's own I personally just use a lime in there because I love the smell of limes but I think either is fine. Some people use the water left over to make tea or for skin care products as well. Best of luck, let me know how you get on👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
After it boil the sea moss in the pot I let it cool down naturally in the pot for about 7/8 hours till it forms In to the gel , then I just blend this and put it in a mason jar and it lasts 4 weeks is this a good way ?
I have always boiled the Seamoss when preparing it for consumption. My only difference is not using milk to sweeten it. I now use honey and/or brown sugar, then I add nutmeg, vanilla essence, almond essence, 1 whole lime and 1 capful of rum. I sweeten it to taste then I refrigerate in a glass jar or bottle. I then drink a glass of sea moss everyday. You know when it is good quality sea moss when after refrigeration, it looks like jelly so you can eat it with a spoon or shake it up or stir to drink it.
I’ve done it both way. I started off by boiling it and then I decided to try the soak and blend. My reasons for no longer using the boiled method are: 1) my daughter did not like the smell. She could smell and taste it in shakes and smoothies I did for her. I did not have this issue with the unboiled seamoss. 2) I find that the unboiled isn’t as jelly as the boiled and I like it that way. It integrates quicker into my dishes. It also applies easier when using as a face mask. Aside from that I do not believe you lose any nutrients for either method and it is just really a matter of preference.
Just soaking my first batch of seamoss.. Found yr video when looking for tips :) I have 2 boys,,and if it stinks, then, yes ,I can see they could be put off when mum gives em a try.. Also soaking method seems much less faff,:) Thanks .
Watch Naptual85 on how she heated her sea moss to make a creamy hair gel, that’s basically how i prepare mine and you don’t have to bring it to a rolling boil at all, just a low heat and it starts to melt pretty quickly, just keep stirring it. Let it cool a little and then blend it. It basically doubles it’s shelf life, actually fridge life lol.
I’ve tried both way and the soaking seems to get better results. That’s not true on the boiling and the nutrients being reminisced. Even Dr. Sebi has a video explaining that. It’s really personal preference.
I used to boil it but lately I have not been boiling it because I prefer the taste of non boiled moss. I use the water from the soaked moss to water my plants. I never throw the water away.
Thank you so much for this video! I saw a video of a Jamaican elder simmering sea moss for a while and then I thought maybe I should boil instead of just soak and blend - I don't think he used a blender I think it just turned to gel and I think he boiled it with lime.
Thanks for your experiment. I just learn about sea moss , and I bought it but I had clue should I cook it or shouldn't I? 😂😂 then I lands on your video. I now what to do . I think, I take it no cooked. Thanks again.
Did you use the same water that you soaked it in to boil the sea moss? Or did you drain it and use new/fresh water to boil? After your 1st use of sea moss, how long did it take to feel the benefits/effects?
i wash my semoss then boil it with spices and let it sit there and it will turn into a jell without blending. when i want to make my drink ill take some of that jell and blend to make my smoothie
You shouldn't use tap water when soaking sea moss , either use filtered water or even better distilled water, and cut up some key limes and put them in the water while it soaks then blend it with key limes aswell
I was on a way that you could actually eat the sea moss and I only search with this video because I was wondering whether to actually eat it instead of it being strained
Excellent video and all the comments are great as well. With so many variations on experience I guess it just comes down to personal preference. I’ve never boiled it nor considered doing so because I thought for sure Dr. Sebi’s method was to never boil or add sugar to sea moss. I don’t use sugar at all but I make fresh fruit flavored sea moss and it is amazing. I even make sea moss juice drinks with fruit or vegetables!! At this moment I’m perplexed because all the feedback makes sense to me. So now, imma try boiling it also!!🌺
I boil my water first let it sit to room temperature then place the moss in the water let it soak 24 hours then get to cleaning it for two days getting all the dirt sand etc..... Out
I'm Jamaican and yes, we see our parents and grandparents boil the seamoss. Again those days blender was not available 😁 another thing we add flaxseed and other gelling substance to the drink
Food Ph is more myth than fact. Your stomach acid is high Ph, naturally. You're not doing much by eating lower Ph foods. If anything it makes it harder to begin digestion.
I always wondered about that. Many recipes call for lemons/limes to alter taste. I've used cinnamon, beets and elderberry for flavoring but I enjoy seamoss naturally.
