I've been in the fitness industry for a decade and I can tell you that the biggest obstacle to weight loss is late night grazing.
Most people can adhere to their diet throughout the day. They can eat a good breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They can also get a great workout in and if they're very diligent, get their steps in. However, once the day ends and they're sitting on the couch relaxing they start to get hungry. One handful of snacks turns into 2, which turns into 3 and before you know it, you blew it. You went from having a great day for your health to having a bad day for your health. Here are 5 strategies to help you avoid late night grazing.
The first strategy is to have a high protein diet. Protein is a satiating macronutrient. If you can have a protein heavy diet (especially if minimally processed), you're going to feel fuller, longer, and it may help you avoid late night grazing.
The second strategy to avoiding late night eating is to make sure you stay adequately hydrated throughout the day. If you can stay hydrated, you can rely more on your hunger cues when compared to being dehydrated.
The third strategy to avoid late night snacking is to have a high protein, low calorie snack. If you can measure off a good, high protein snack, and eat just that, you can quiet the stomach rumbling and avoid grazing on higher calorie options.
The fourth strategy to helping you lose weight is to have fiber. When I'm deep in a cut, I have a fiber supplement late at night for two reasons. A fiber supplement, like protein, is satiating and low calorie. The second reason is that it can keep you regular, especially if you've been cutting for a while.
The last strategy to help you avoid late night grazing is to lean into your WHY. Why do you want to lose weight? Maybe you want to be there for your kids. Maybe you want to look great when you take your shirt off. Maybe you just want to feel healthy. You have a reason WHY you want to better your health, LEAN INTO IT! Honestly, the first several weeks are the hardest part (until you're very lean or have been cutting for months), once you break your old habits, it becomes much easier.
