The Brain That Wouldn't Die (also known as The Head That Wouldn't Die) is a 1962 American science-fiction/horror film directed by Joseph Green and written by Green and Rex Carlton. The film was completed in 1959 under the working title The Black Door but was not released until May 3, 1962, when it was renamed. The main plot focuses upon a mad doctor who develops a means to keep human body parts alive. He must eventually use his discovery on someone close to him, and chaos ensues.
The movie is about Dr. Bill Cortner (Jason Evers), who saves a patient pronounced dead, but the senior surgeon, Cortner’s father (Bruce Brighton) condemns his son’s unorthodox methods and transplant theories.
While driving to his family’s country house, Cortner and his beautiful fiancée Jan Compton (Virginia Leith) get into a car accident that decapitates Jan. Cortner recovers her severed head and rushes to his country house basement laboratory. He and his crippled assistant Kurt (Leslie Daniels) revive the head in a liquid-filled tray. Jan's new existence is agony, however, and she begs Cortner to let her die. He ignores her pleas, and she grows to resent him.
Cortner decides to commit murder to obtain a body for Jan. He hunts for a suitable specimen at a burlesque nightclub, on the streets, and at a beauty contest. She begins communicating telepathically with a hideous mutant, an experiment gone wrong, locked in a laboratory cell. When Kurt leaves a hatch in the cell door unlocked, the monster grabs and tears off Kurt’s arm. Kurt dies from his injuries.
Cortner lures an old girlfriend, figure model Doris Powell (Adele Lamont), to his house, promising to study her scarred face for plastic surgery. He drugs her and carries her to the laboratory. Jan protests Cortner’s plan to transplant her head onto Doris’s body. He tapes Jan’s mouth shut.
When Cortner goes to quiet the monster, it grabs Cortner through the hatch and breaks the door from its hinges. Their struggles set the laboratory ablaze. The monster (Eddie Carmel), a seven-foot giant with a horribly deformed head, bites a chunk from Cortner’s neck. Cortner dies, and the monster carries the unconscious Doris to safety. As the lab goes up in flames, Jan says, "I told you to let me die." The screen goes black, followed by a maniacal cackle.

Directed by Joseph Green, produced by Rex Carlton and Mort Landberg, written by Rex Carlton and Joseph Green, starring Jason Evers, Virginia Leith and Eddie Carmel.

Just saw this film a few weeks ago, and even as a 35 year old it scared me. Like being paralyzed or in a coma but able to talk and articulate, just without a body. The thought of just being a severed head without a body, no way of locomotion, staring at the same wall over and over, not even the ability turn my head just... *shudders*

If you ever visit North Carolina and find yourself on US 29 North outside of Greensboro Longtime fans of the movie may find the steps outside the welcome to NC center at the state line of interest. They are the same steps Dr. Cortner runs up carrying the bundle supposedly containing his fiance's head It was either still under construction or just finished when the film was shooting. Used to know where the crossroad was they drive through just before the crash but a lot of the roads in the area have been rerouted, closed, widened, or otherwise changed since so I'm no longer sure where it is

19:32...."My eyes are deceiving me"....No my eyes are deceiving me...lol....This is utterly ridiculous...A head gets decapitated and talks to tell about it and why her face unmarked?...lol....22:32...And whats up with this one arm guy working at a hospital..."I can do this operation one arm tied behind my back"....wtf lol....23:23...And what the hell is in that closet it sounded like the most disgusting noise i ever heard...Like to see all the actors who applied for that job....lol.....36:00....Are you kidding me?....This girl has more conversation dead then alive...later on she converses with the thing in the closet...What a dynamic duo these 2 will make....39:34...."What's behind that door"..."Something even more terrible then you"...What a talking penis?...lol....107:27....Jesus now he's got no arms but don't worry...later on the Good Doctor made history by operating on a patient with no arms.....Now the only reason why i stuck around this far in the movie to see what the "Hell" was in that closet.....18:55....There's a knock at the door "Who is it"...lol......What an ending ...even the dead turned over in there graves on this movie.

Kind of shocked to run across this. First, it's a "sexploitation" movie. That much is obvious when Dr. Bill Cortner goes looking for a body for his girlfriend. Some of his lines are quite funny too. From a woman's perspective he could be flirting, from his own, they are honest statements of intent. The dialog, though delivered in a ham-handed way, is decadent. But let us be honest. The film is a handy way to show off a bunch of young women with nice figures. I did find his soliloquy at the beginning of the film very interesting. Almost every one of his predictions regarding transplants have come true in the twenty-first century.

This is sort of an even cheaper (and female) version of the German-made film THE HEAD, which was essentially based, uncredited on the 1920's weird Russian novel, PROFESSOR DOWELL'S HEAD by the early amazing Russian SF author A. Belyayev! His book is a very creepy horror tale that was pretty unusual for having been written during the Soviet era! ---and this threadbare movie is kind of its "descendant".

No ability to even turn my head. That alone could drive someone mad. Just like being in a coma, except being able to speak and see around me... *shudders*

I first saw this movie at 35 just about a month ago, and holy FUCK does it scare me!!! Not the monster, the gore, but the head on the table. I don't blame her for wanting to die. Just being there, no ability to move your head, no locomotion. People could do whatever they wanted with you and your brain. Not to mention the phantom limb pain of your entire body! That is what scared me most in this movie. Imaging that just... *shuddders* That would be enough to make me beg for death. Well, I think that takes care of sleep tonight............
