Pitch calling not being great doesn't matter when the pitchers are leaving pitches right down the middle. of course they are gonna get lit up. Him calling maybe not the exact right pitch doesn't give the pitcher an excuse to hang it...

He came to STL as an offense-first catcher, and everyone who was paying attention knew it. He was always going to be very different from Yadi. I suspect that his hitting hasn't been as good this year because he has had to spend a lot of time getting accustomed to the Cardinals pitching staff and way of doing things. The Cards probably gave him that contract expecting that he'd be about a 40th-percentile catcher defensively who hits with enough power for a #5 lineup spot. What they weren't counting on was a) just how massive Yadi's intangibles benefited the team, and b) plugging a roughly-average catcher into a system designed around a HOF-tier catcher wasn't going to work. Maybe if they had started from the assumption that Knizner would start a lot of games behind the plate this year to give Contreras time to acclimate to the new team - and also structured the contract/$$$ with that in mind. That said, one can hardly blame all the Cardinals' pitching woes this season on Contreras and the expectations surrounding him. Flaherty has said that the reason they've given up a lot of hits in two-strike counts is the failure to execute pitches well, which a catcher cannot control.

Willson was never that good a game caller. And rumblings of strained pitcher relationships appear to be true. Pretty telling that many guys preferred to be caught by someone else over him.

"I'm going to a better organization" except for the fact the Cubs have more playoff success and more wins in general than the Cardinals do since he debuted in 2016... kinda what you play for right, to win? Not to finish in last place, something he never did playing for the Cubs. I would still like him, if he could've just been a professional about it... I still liked Dexter Fowler when he signed with St. Louis so it's not just the fact he plays for the Cardinals... he's a dbag clown, stuff every other fanbase told us when he was with us, btw.

Lane Thomas was a former Cardinal who was begging to be traded because he felt he kept being overlooked and they traded him for a washed Jon Lester and he's a great player. Lester wasn't the inning eating starter that he was on their rival teams, sadly.

Stay away from Yelich, huge contract, 5 years, and $136M left on it for a ground ball hitter

That’s the baseball business world dude. The cubs didn’t offer an extension so of course he was salty that he wasn’t viewed as a long term guy. Free agency in general is always an overpay, always has been and always will.

Their Ace is basically 50 years old and should have left last year, their other potential Ace is always hurt and won't be the same, and their best pitchers this year would be good/great 3 4 and 5 starters on most other teams. Yeah I saw this in December. Plus they have a decent enough Knizner and a 23 year old catcher in Herrera who has done well in the minors and is currently hitting .348 in the majors in 48 ABs. They probably should have signed some pitchers or saved the money for one. Oops.

The Cardinals have never been known to throw money away, hence their $168M payroll. 7 or 8 of the top 10 teams are well over $225. I won't say anything about the Mets $310. The Cardinals have needed starting pitching for 3 years. You can't blame Wilson for the tight ownership or the front office hunting yard sales. The bullpen is full of a bunch of almost pitchers. They haven't been back to the Series since 2011.
