The entire album Move Like This was a true gift for Cars fans. It almost didn’t happen. A major feud between Ric and Ben was the catalyst that caused the band to break up in 1987. For years afterward, bitterness between them followed. But finally, they did mend their fences. It was during this time that Ben was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer then passed away in 2000. Ric had absolutely no interest in reuniting the band without Ben, and stubbornly said never again. But then something happened….it may have had something to do with the fans’ frustration….but suddenly Ric warmed up to the idea and began writing new material and jamming with Elliot, Greg and David. The result was this album, followed by a short tour. Thanks, guys!!! ♥️♥️♥️
Not sure if another one will be coming. It took Ric a long time to write this album. I read in an article that he said without Ben he knew the material had to be really good to pull it off. It's a masterpiece! The problem is as great as this record was it got very little play...That has to be frustrating for him.
Ric Ocasek said back in 2011 this was for the fans and they had no expectations. It did take a long time for him to write this song as he wanted it to be the classic sound and he did not have Ben Orr, his close friend in real life, to help. He did a great job with his band mates collaborating as well as Jacknife Lee who helped out producing this song which was a single along with Sad Song which he also produced for them (and played bass on both). With the state of the record industry, they did not plan to release an album just a few songs online but in the end, a record company signed them and they did a full album and moderate promotion with a limited tour (11 stops). This was a one time thing for Ric Ocasek and the band as Ric is a highly successful songwriter and producer for other bands.
People don't realize that members of The Cars, The Police and Blondie were just about the same age as Paul McCartney and Mic Jagger. They're not going to be around much longer. The innovating bands like The Ramones and Devo were actually younger than The Cars, Blondie or The Police.
What an amazing record to pull off...it's like they picked up the tone arm in 1984 and put it down in 2011. Can't think of another older band that has managed that trick, maybe Steely Dan in 2000.
I love your comment. It only varies a little from my own thought. This album has one great song after another on it like 'Candy-O'. The sound of that album and the first one are still here, but updated for the 21st century. This wasn't just an final encore album, it's one of their best albums!
And that's the key word here: a GREAT final album. It's a fantastic fusion of the late '70s classic Car's vintage sound we love, fused with a fresh 21st century update that's just perfect. Like Candy-0, the songs blend well into the next, and the next, etc.
@@chiggerbaby68 It's not your fault. It came out in May 2011 but without radio airplay or much else. I happened to find out about it by accident. The whole album is great!!
Note, fun little Cars fact: Ocasek decided to title the album Move Like This as a reference to the band's reputation for not moving around very much onstage. It came from one line in the song, "Too Late." RIP Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr, at least they left us with one more album just 8 years ago and a Hall Of Fame performance in 2018.
What can I say nobody has a voice like Ric did it was awesome. All these years I listened to this group there my favorite band even still this day 12/23/21 and going strong as long as I’m alive there’s more to Rics and Bens Music they just don’t play it on the radio sad so many great songs not heard any questions please ask take care all
First of all the Cars are one of the best, most successful bands ever.Second of all- I am blown away that they sound EXACTLY like they were.Blue Tip could have been their next hit in 1989.I LOVE IT !!!!!
I love the way one great song flows to the next like Candy-0. I hope the Cars are still around in the 2020's. You know The Rolling Stones still will----so should The Cars. (I hope there's a new album before then though!)
Ha ... good eye. I directed this video and it was definitely a hard request ... wrote about it if you wanna know how it went down: cineclast.com/2019/09/16/how-ric-ocasek-and-changed-my-life/
Wow, still all these years later that Cars sound is musical bliss! So happy we got this album before Rics untimely passing, Ben was there in spirit RIP.. SO LOVE THIS, OH THAT SOUND ITS UNMISTAKABLY THE CARS!!
+klaws32 I agree 100%. It's totally classic Cars, but with an updated fresh sound. A beautiful fusion of 1979's 'Candy-0' sound brought into the present (even thought it's 5 years old this month). It's one of The Car's best albums for sure.
Thank Jacknife Lee - he did the same treatment for REM in their later years with success. The Cars had him play bass and produce half the songs including the two singles - Sad Song and Blue Tip.
@Vincent H. Really? Please explain why Ric, who produced the other half of the album, had zero top 40 hits? Only two of the five Jacknife Lee did made the top 40. I don't disagree he was an excellent song writer, but as a producer for his own music, he was not so great. On the other hand, when he was not the songwriter and produced (for example, a couple of Weezer albums) he had huge success. It is very difficult to write and produce your own music as getting a second opinion is important so when he did both for the Cars, he rarely ever had a hit (he produced the last album for The Cars in the 1980s and only had one hit at the bottom of the top 40 after their mega successful Hearbeat City album where they worked with famed producer John "mutt" Lange.
I didn't even know this video existed a week ago, and never seemed to have caught this tune on the radio. Who would have thought that by 2011 that these men could come back as if they had never parted, but that is how guitar legend Elliot Easton described it, being as if no time had passed & they went right back into their groove that is almost beyond description, they simply were what they were & that was truly & creatively unique. This video is right at the top of the list on production values with INXS' 'What You Need' and Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer', another case of an outstanding song with an outstanding video. What a genius Ric was and is bandmates were all so spot-on and so utterly seamless, making the the sim greater than any single part, even Ric's, seem so effortlessly clean and tight across the board. Like the Violent Femme's first album, Ric & the Cars had a sound and techniques that seems like it shouldn't work, but boy - did it ever.
I love the fact that they came back if it was only the briefest of time like going to a drive through,to say Hi were still here and still can produce an album of music the fans love, sadly it was to be their last, with the unexpected passing of Ric Ocasek, and Ben gone now 20 years 😢R.I.P. Ric & Ben.
This was a groovy album. So typical of human nature that everyone is posting on the popular clips today, saying they'll miss Ric, but where were the fans when this album came out??
Bliss 😊 Ric is my favorite singer of all time, & his lyrics are… well… just cooler then others. Ric once said: “ I’m a Stenographer for mass hysteria.”
I love this track, actually I love this whole album.... it slipped by me somehow... I only now discovered it.... It's friggen awesome..... Yours truly "Unruly" Pierre from down under where I got my own band called UnnRooLee ...... Cheerio 🙃
It's a shame to think they're hiding their age. They were always ahead of the game years before others. Now, lots of oldies released new albums. Tom Petty, Neil Young, Mark Knopfler, Bob Dylan, Duran Duran.
They hide their age as did Cyrano, with their usual brilliance at video aesthetics, substantive lyrical content (if you think about it). Especially the "Sad Song". It is, after all, the abiding music of the world, as I'm afraid you and everyone who abides in the world will see. It turns out that this song, this video, "Sad Song", represents the Formulam Finalitatis, which I derived infallibly. Be sad. Be very sad.
@@mustlovepretzels Actually I directed this music video ... it was one of Ric's two rules for me "no women, no showing our faces" ... I love a challenge;)
Finally! I always wondered if these guys would ever get back together and after Orr's death I was 99% sure they wouldnt. When I heard they were back together I had to listen and the new album is awesome. Im glad they kept their same sound and didnt change it....Please take note newer bands this is how you do it!
Cars fan since the beginning. This song came out in 2011. If you pay attention to the lyrics it is almost as if Ric could see 2022. Or 2016-2022 for that matter. you stupefy the thinkers you're hugging all the flakes and all the things you think are true only mystify the fakes Well, keep your hat on backwards And keep your lips tucked in The world is full of quackers And belly button rings I know you'd like to be immune To the things they say You're hung up on your heroes And upon the beast you pray Yeah, hey and the gunheads part.
There should be a radio format that exclusively plays new music by older artist. The classic rock stations aren't going play the new Madonna, prince, or Duran Duran song. They have Like a Virgin, Kiss, and Hungry Like a Wolf they can play. The pop stations would rather play new music by new artists like Adele, Sia, or Florence and the Machine. So more established artists are screwed.
Since the guys are just line art in this vid they should have mixed in some backing vocals samples from Ben and added Ben in as line art. It would have been a great tribute to him.
