In this teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche talks about the panic attacks that he experienced as a child and how he used compassion and calm-abiding meditation to free himself from anxiety. Mingyur Rinpoche teaches these forms of meditation in his Joy of Living Level 1(Calming the Mind) and Level 2 (Opening the Heart) courses. You can discuss this monthly teaching in the Monthly Teachings Forum of learning.tergar.org under the topic The Causes of Anxiety and Suffering.

I had been struggling with generalized anxiety disorder and days-to-weeks-long periods of strong panic for more than 15 years. First thought after waking up? Anxiety ... Arriving at lunch time with a fully developed state of extreme anxiety and ending the day fighting physical symptoms of panic. I had many phases of deep depression about this disorder, I didn't understand what caused it, I wondered why me, what went wrong in my life and so on ... usual questions. Life still had its ups and downs but the latter always were more prominent, felt more real. I started to fear everything, like he said in the video, I developed a strong panic against panic, a vicious circle which drove me crazy night after night. I dropped out of college, I broke up long-term friendships, I destroyed my relationship, switched jobs like pants just to run away and try to find a save place on this planet. Then, after 15 years of constant anxiety, panic attacks, depression and delusion I started a therapy (CBT). I thought 'YES, this will fix me, this will make the anxiety and panic go away'. Guess what, it did not. It couldn't! Because I didn't understand what was going on. I thought, there must be a reason, there must be a time in my life when this started, there must be physical, a real(!) event that caused the disorder. I never understood that all the time it was me who fed the anxiety, who made the fear stronger by trying to beat it. Like he explained in the video, my mind made proposals and I followed. I tried to analyze my fear, tried to find out why a sunny day scares the shit out of me on one day, the other day I can enjoy it. The answer was pretty simple, it was my perception of my own emotions, specifically my anxiety. I needed to realize while danger might be real and physically existent outside of me, fear, anxiety and panic whatsoever just exist within my mind ... holy cow, what an insight this was to me. Recognizing the fact, that my mind played tricks on me was hard. Recognizing the fact that I joined those trick games and played a major role was even harder. So how am I today? Have anxiety and panic attacks vanished, am I 'free'? Well, I'm definitely doing a loooooot better than during this long period of my life. I enjoy being alive, I sleep well (still too less, but hey :) ) and I can think about all these topics without falling into the pit of anxiety. Sure, bad thoughts try to creep in sometimes (what had 15 years time to develop will not go away fully all of a sudden), but now that I know about my perception, that it can be wrong, life got extremely better for me. It needs a lot of courage to recognize your own anxiety, especially when there is no reason for it, when it is generalized and you might think you're just insane. It needs even more courage and commitment to learn to handle it, to learn how to get rid of the bad habits that support fear and panic. BUT it is doable, I can do it, you can do it, we all can do it. I didn't have the luck of having heard of Mingyur Rinpoche or Thich Nhat Hanh back in those days, man I wish I had, it would have helped so much. Nowadays I watch these vids and read some books (not many, but some) to confirm my new learnings, to solidify my new perception and it works. I went through more than 15 years of mental darkness and now I'm free of symptoms for already two years. Thanks to CBT which got me started to think differently, thanks to people like in the video which offer some good ideas, thanks to myself for finally starting to disbelieve the monkey-mind and starting to believe in my own strength. Never again will I fight anxiety or panic, I'll acknowledge and then I let them go. I got it inked onto my wrists: "No retreat, no surrender", taken from a silly 80's movie, but true down to the heart. I did it, you can do it, too. It's a process, breathe in deeply, trust yourself and just start somewhere. Soon that cycle will begin to bend, twist and finally set you free. All the best, my friend.

Killian Lomax thanks so much killian for this, honestly really struggling the last 4 weeks especially have been so tough, I’ve cried every day, had intrusive thoughts, thought I can’t take anymore, said no to so many things and the grip doesn’t seem to want to let go, it’s there as soon as I open my eyes it’s there all day and when I’m trying to sleep at night, I feel lower than I’ve ever been and reading this has given me the slightest glimmer of hope and I completely understand what you mean about the weather I’ve never heard anyone say it before but sometimes even a rainy or humid day can scare me and I don’t understand why, I’ve always thought I was so different, thanks so much for your post 😊

i've been meditating everyday for over a year now. And it is a tremendous method to practice self discipline. However, doing it alone was not enough to tackle my anxiety. What helped me moved through fear in my experience was also taking action and practicing doing activities regardless of how I felt. If I didn't feel like cooking, I would cook, if I didn't feel like taking a shower, I would take a shower, if i didn't feel like going for a run, I went for a run. Learn to move forward regardless of how you feel, combine that with meditation. That is what Im on right now.

Yes, sometimes, (most times) a combination of practices helps you get to a better place. When I read what you wrote I thought to myself and how I tend to procrastinate things sometimes. Perhaps anxiety from procrastinating is what you are feeling? When I get started on anything I immediately feel better. That alone is not the solution though - I need to look into why I feel that way - why my mind goes there and starts the anxiety. Meditation can help with this. What is there in my thoughts that can bring that negative 95% of my thought into light, and how it is irrational. Anyway - keep it up, keep working, make it a way of life, and the worse that can happen will be you (we) feel a somewhat better. :0)

I started with not calling it "MY anxiety". I stopped claiming it as "mine". Then I trained my mind. I AM IN CHARGE OF MY THOUGHTS, not vice versa. Even the random thoughts, I forced myself to be neutral. I dont have to label this thought good or bad. I can just let it pass by. I do NOT have to emotionally react. We give everything its meaning/label. Choose what YOU want because YOU'RE in control. I constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY read psychology books, self improvement and self love books, spiritual books and videos, I CONSTANTLY strengthened my mind. I went from depression, anxiety disorder and suicidal thoughts, to complete peace and bliss!!! It was so quick that I actually forgot i ever suffered. I did it, so can you!!

"Enlightenment" is just a weird silly term that doesn't apply to reality. Most mindful practices don't subscribe to such a notion (it's always a journey, in reality). Unless one wants to apply their own usage to the word. Or like, con artist "gurus" pretending they're "enlightened" or whatever. This guy is great though, I will say that.

@@shyrishdhyani I have found that journaling before meditating can be pretty helpful. What Rinpoche teaches is an understanding of our human consciousness and relaxation is sometimes a byproduct of that and not exactly the end goal. If you are looking to release the anxiety and tension in the body, I have found dynamic meditation to be pretty helpful. For example, Silva Centering exercise is one that I do often.

This video was the first video I've seen where I feel like someone understands exactly how I feel and how to overcome it, and it has given me an incredible amount of positive energy, like I used to have. I thought this is just what happens when you become older, but that's wrong. This video changed my life. Now I know what I need to do to overcome any suffering or irrational worries I encounter in life: -Acknowledge that they're there, don't avoid the issue. If I find it hard to know how I'm feeling, I'll use meditation to do so. -Don't attach any negative judgement to my 'panic', just let it exist and be aware of it, not necessarily shutting it down. -Employ self-compassion. Every time I know I've overcome a minor issue, praise myself for it, therefore rewiring my negative thinking. Hope this also helps others.

When I was in my worst days of anxiety, meditation helped tremendously, but also very temporarily. It is later on the wisdom that sealed the victory when meditation is like a first-aid. Therefore, I really agree with the part that awareness of the problem and meditation has to come together to eradicate those unnecessary miseries.

I beat my anxiety and panic attacks when I read an article on the internet written by a female doctor who said something like it's physically impossible to have a panic attack if you don't breath in other words hold your breath until you feel your heart rate drop (for Gods sake don't hold your breath until you turn blue lol) it's not easy at first because you will feel anxiety and panic and holding your breath is the last thing on your mind but this is how you learn now some situations like having 10 coffees or running may make your heart beat fast and it's a recipe for a panic attack but even then fight them head on because your mind and fear is what caused them so say to yourself whatever happens they won't kill you and they happen only because I think it, it's these little barriers I created in my mind that ultimately stopped them now I think my life is 99% better although my life still sucks in other areas panic is not something that worries me anymore, I remember at one point I felt so happy because I actually wanted to have a panic attack to prove to myself I could handle it and I don't think I had one after that. And don't worry if this doesn't help you every panic attack you have you will live and learn to cope better even if you have them all your life which I think is impossible they will get easier and easier to deal with and the fear will be gone and the attacks will be gone, I promise you you may feel like you suffer now but you will get better soon just stay strong. We were not put on this earth to live a happy life, this life is a test for us all but for everyone the test is different and I think you can pass it easy so long as you just don't give up you will see.

Maybe that has worked for you but i would not take that advice since breath is the key in life. I dont think its because you hold your breath you relax its because you take your mind away from the Panic and focusing on the breath instead do the same but while breathing

Meditation is the only way to permanent healing of any depression. Sit on a chair, close your eyes, be still and do alternate nostril breathing meditation for 5 to 10 minutes early morning and evening. First watch "alternate nostril breathing meditation" videos on you tube. Also try to observe your breath while inhaling and exhaling. Slowly the negative thoughts will reduce. Do the above practice daily. Best wishes--Shyaam--Life Coach

A bit food for your mind: Is there really no pain when we are noy aware of it? I don't think so. Animals still feel pain, they just aren't aware of all the things that could possibly hurt them. In that sense, our awareness makes us suffer and, ironically, one might say, what helps us to get out of it is awareness of our over-awareness. As Mingyur says:"You recognise your own perception". That is for me the biggest problem. Thank you very much, Mingyur Rinpoche! 🙏🏻

Animals don't suffer like we do because they live in the moment and have no concept of time, past or future. When two ducks have a fight, they swim away after and go back to normal, they don't complain and worry about it all day. Eckhart Tolle teaches this!

Wow! Even Buddisht monks can be hilarious, I died laughing watching this video! I thought monks are like all kind of serious people. I laughed so much that I don't even need meditation anymore. The laughter itself is so alleviating! And it's as if Allah has somehow led me to this video because I am experiencing the "stomach" problem.

You should listen to the Dalai Lama and some other buddhist teachers and monks. They are the warmest and most hilarious people you'll meet. Buddhist monks are very different to the traditional western christian monks and stuff, with their stern outlooks.
