About the whistling arrow: There is a historical variant in ancient Japan (Heian era) called the Kabura-ya (turnip-head arrow). It is basically what Joerg thought it was for - it's a signaling and messenger arrow. The whistling sound is basically used to alert the recipient that a message has been delivered. It's also used as a pre-battle intimidation tactic during wartime. Basically to demoralize the enemy into believing you have a superior number of warriors. Something like that happened in the Battle of Kurikara in 1183, where the number of whistling arrows fired by each side slowly increased from 15 shots to over a hundred shots over several exchanges of arrow volleys. Nowadays, such whistling arrows is used for Shinto cleansing rituals to ward off evil spirits. Most often seen (and heard) during the New Years Day at Japanese Shinto shrines.

I think that the whistling arrows are actually for beginner practice archery and that the whistling allows you to more accurately track the general direction and approximate distance that the arrow has travelled. Having lost several dozen arrows (and many hours searching) to the nightmare that is tall grass, I feel that, to an extent, those whistling arrows could provide to be an absolute godsend to archers who have the frustrating habit of missing their targets.

The bow fishing head actually makes a lot of sense when I think about it. When the fish tries to swim away, the broadhead deploys and if not snags it, guts it. It's kind of like what I've heard about a sharks teeth. They're designed in such a way where it's easy to get in but hard to get out. If a shark bit you and you tried to pull away, it would make the wound much worse. I believe it's a similar concept.

That first tip was introduced in the USA decades ago. They were in "Archery World" magazine as far back as the 80's when I was a little kid just starting in archery. They are meant for small game, squirrels, raccoons and the like. The springy bits off the side keep the arrow from burying in the grass and the blunt tip delivers all the impact while minimizing penetration. Small game just needs a hard "punch". They were sold as "Judo points".

That “twitting” tip is used for signaling in ancient times. There was a Xiongnu chanyu in the 3rd century BC called Modu, who invented such a type of sirening arrows and trained his horse archers to shoot volleys at whichever direction the sound went, sort of like how a tracer works. He even ordered them to shoot his favorite horse and concubine, and anyone who hesitated were judged as disloyal and summarily executed. Modu’s father preferred the younger son, and exiled Modu. Modu later assassinated his father during a hunting trip using the sirening arrow.

First of all, yeah, glad you realised the “cruelty tip” is just a normal fishing tip. And for the small game tip (the one with 5 claws), if you read the sellers description, you will probably find a maximum bow power it should be used at, typically 50 or 60 pounds from a recurve or compound bow. That’s to prevent penetration. You shot of out of a 200lb crossbow so of course it’s gonna destroy the tip and go through the jell. That’s not it’s designed use.

Most whistling arrows are used for hunting and the whistle is designed to cause a predictable reaction, such as to startle the animal between release and impact. Regulations are often very specific about which arrow to use for which animal, implying that some animals may have responded differently to certain sounds. You can also use the whistling Arrowhead to warn other Hunters that there are either Bears or Wolves in the area.

21:44 I love the nickname "king of fun" lol🤣 A small tip: Actually that arrow was something quiet common long time ago in east Asia. It was used for multiple purpose, such as delivering mails to enemy army when unable to send a messager, and the voice was just like saying "knock-knock, this is not an arrow for attacking and there is something important with it". Also, some tribe leaders used it to send commands, like pointed out the target for their horse archer bodyguards in hunting or combat.

I seem to recall reading somewhere, that there were different signal arrows in use, that would produce distinctive whistles when shot, allowing Generals to signal orders to troops at a distance, by firing it across their lines or overhead, similar to how different war drum beats or horn blares could signal advance, retreat, close, fire-at-will, make-ready, reload, flank, hold, defend, or even different rotations.

I saw a video made my a Russian fellow that describing ancient arrow types from that region. One of the arrows had a large hollow whistling chamber that was hand carved. He described that the whistling was made to replicate the sounds of falcons and birds of prey. The hunter wait by bodies of water and would fire the arrow over a passing flock of water foul. Sometimes the sound would cause the birds to panic and land in the water for safety. If successful in diverting the flock to the water, the follow up shots to actually hit the birds would be easier to make. The wooden chamber at the end of the arrow was also carved into a diamond shape, which supposedly recreated the shape of a diving bird of prey.

They are designed for birds and rodent. Penetration would destroy much of the animal because they are so small and have comparitively fragile bodies (think turkey hunting, you use shot not a rifle bullet). Instead you want to kill via blunt shock trauma. It preserves the smaller game's body. The prongs help grasp to the animal creating drag so it's harder for them it flee in the short burst of adrenaline they sometimes have, help reduce risk of penetration by spreading the energy a bit more, as well as preventing it from burying itself in the ground.
@blackfox3082
