Your explanation of variety and limitations of the various self driving strategies from multiple OEMs was very fair. Tesla's AI strategy for Full Self Driving is the most ambitious and by far the most impactful as it will be able to drive on any road or highway. But, first they have to complete the project. Your reporting is the best I've seen. If the rest of the media was as unbiased the public would have a better understanding of the scope and advantages that Tesla is aiming to accomplish. Thank you for another great video.

At 20 cents per mile, a group of four will call two robotaxis or one autonomous Cybertruck/ModelX. Tesla's team found the balance which leverages their strengths and is supported by their best projections for cost and utilization. A single robotaxi will service 80%-90% of fares depending on time of day. @@HoundStuff GM is a real business focused on delivering products they perceive the people want. They have had some hiccups, but compared to Ford stopping and starting and stopping and starting, or Tesla vaporware, or Stellantis’s impending implosion, I trust in what GM’s vision looks like. @@JohnCap523 There is also lots of room for disagreement when it comes to best in class. Tesla offers the most superchargers although many charge at home. They continue to have the biggest market, at least for the time being, if not the best quality. They have also been around the longest, even if Elon is weird. The Lyriq is versatile where the base model isn't so high end and add features as the buyer sees fit, plus the quality is among the best, and the biggest dealer network. One of the things people need to realize about self driving, is that it will be not yet, not yet, until it is NOW. There may also be various companies who approach the technology from different perspectives, which translates to slightly different products that do essentially the same thing. I personally think is IS coming, it is just a matter of who crosses the finish line first, and when that happens.

Ive had FSD for 3 years on my Model 3. When visual roadway cues like signs, markings, etc....are clear - it works 98% of the miles driven. Under these conditions its clearly.....a MUCH MUCH better and safer driver than me. More courteous, safer and predictable. FSD sees in every direction all at once. Its at least 10x better than me and I have driven a million miles without an at-fault accident. In its current supervised required state it has great value especially on longer trips.. but being able to sleep?, its getting there but not this year. Still worth it to me. I can see, without doubt in my mind, that FSD vehicle auto insurance will plummet and non fsd vehicle insurance will rise dramatically. That economic forcing function will mean FSD saves money for the consumer and it will be widely adopted. The only accidents will be caused by those without it. Its actually crazy good.

We've driven with FSD several times now. We had multiple interventions, but that was on us, not FSD. We didn't trust FSD yet. I think that folks like us "pollute" the data with false interventions. It's already better than the data probably shows, but there's still a "fear factor" that has to be overcome. When I force myself not to intervene, FSD does the right thing; it's just going to take a little getting used to. Tesla should probably trim the first few months of acclimation for new FSD users.

I've been experiencing FSD since it was released. It has gone from almost scary, to barely usable, to pretty good, to amazing but not perfect. We are also located in Michigan. We expect that autonomous driving systems will continue to refuse to operate in severe weather for several more years. FSD and Waymo stay parked during blizzards, sandstorms, floods, and torrential rain. A conservative human driver is better off doing the same. I think the systems will be surpass humans with snow cover by 2028. Learning data from many vehicles sliding through icy intersections will be required before they learn to be ultra conservative in icy conditions. Those headlines will cause a stir. The vehicle has accelerometers, gyroscope, 8 unblinking high definition cameras, 100% focused processing power, acute awareness of wheel slip, and superhuman reaction time. The Tesla FSD fleet gains an entire lifetime of driving experience (500,000 miles) every 3.5 minutes. As the fleet grows, the rate improves. Our in person training sessions with thousands of Nissan sales people at hundreds of dealerships and regional track venues were no place for acting. It is a lot of work correcting misinformation and explaining the economic, political, and scientific realities of EV production, ownership, charging, service, recycling, and policies. We know they'll never meet another person who lives and breathes this stuff like we do. We understand that we have one day to impart as much knowledge as we possibly can, and we generally succeed at changing hearts and minds. Dealerships in places like Louisiana, Arkansas, and West Virginia present a different set of challenges compared to markets where EVs are already common. Of course, there are some misaligned incentives when considering the franchise dealership revenue model...and there is not a clear solution for that in any region. We know that our education was effective because we administered testing after the sessions. We are contracted by so many automakers because we do move the needle. Today's LiON volumetric density is around 700Wh/L. Lithium Sulfur tops out around 580, which is better than the practical density of many passenger vehicle EV packs a few years ago. If they could figure out how to reduce the charge swelling, the volume could improve greatly. The room for expansion is the volume eater. Arrive at destination and save time AND money on parking. Multi-stop routes are easy. Just have the car park and wait. Service providers will respond to demand. Everything is possible for a price. Most of us like the idea of maximizing the return on each dollar we spend. Here is how a robotaxi delivers superior value: Robotaxis require no time or effort is required to precondition the cabin or scrape off snow. The car is clean and the car is energized for the journey. Riders don't have to pay for taxes on the real estate to store and protect the car. We don't pay to insure the car. We are not liable for damage which might occur to the car based on externalities like a nail in the tire, distracted driver hitting rear bumper. There are no interest payments. There is no net worth erosion due to depreciation. For these and many other reasons, a robotaxi is far MORE convenient than automobile ownership for hundreds of millions of earthlings. Great summary of Tesla and Elon's history with Autopilot and FSD. However, why would we expect the Cybercab to have Level 5 autonomy? That requires it to operate on any road, and in any conditions, that an average human driver could. All of the descriptions Tesla has written are a better match for L4 autonomy, which allow taking alternate routes or stopping in a safe place if the road or conditions are too difficiult. As an EV driver I'm glad I don't have to think about how my transportation costs might swing from day to day. If I want to, I can buy some solar panels and get all of my energy for free...for decades. Is energy independence an attractive idea for you David? At this stage, we only recommend EV ownership to those who can charge cheaply, conveniently, and reliably where their vehicles are typically parked. We pay $0.11/kWh for overnight EV charging electricity at our Michigan property. It costs us less than $15 to drive our electric pickup trucks 300 miles. Most EV drivers only use public DC fast charging a few times per year when they take very long road trips. Most Tesla Superchargers currently cost less than $0.40/kWh with the same rate all day every day. Some have higher costs during peak hours and rates could be as high as $1/kWh for DC fast charging. That is the capital markets at work. If a price is too high, drivers will not pay the price and the price will be lowered. No big deal. I looked up the cost per hour of a city bus and a good number to use is $100 per hour. For city busses, you can assume an average speed of about 15MPH. If you average about 30 people on the bus, you get $0.22 per mile per person Tesla's self driving I am going to bet will have different accidents but not fewer than humans. The robo-van is a complete joke. Consider one pothole.

Late to the market? Only a few large cities have robotaxi service and the Waymo business model does not scale to or support smaller communities, where most Americans reside. Cybercab is designed to operate in any driveable surface. Robovan suspension raises and lowers in real-time according to terrain and passenger access requirements. Tesla has only produced capable automotive products and we have no reason to believe the brightest engineers in the business will suddenly become unable to accommodate common conditions. www.teslarati.com/elon-musk-explains-tesla-robovan-suspension-system/ -Producer Tim

Sometimes we need to compromise, sometimes we can do better. Opening trade to China could give us cheap EVs and cheap solar to fight climate change , but also destroy our Auto industry (including tesla) and give China Supreme leverage against us. @@MissGoElectric GM has admitted their EVs are not profitable and plan to be profitable in 2025. I thought 2025, they will overtake Tesla. GM is not transparent with their EV division which is a red flag. I think they are roughly in the same position as Ford and that's generous. Ford loss $4.3 billion in the Ford E division in 2023.

Sound reasoning. Legacy auto has many capital efficiency problems. Their disadvantages also include countless long term supplier agreement expenses while Tesla is largely vertically integrated. Then we must add franchise dealership margin leaks. Add devaluation of ICE IP and assets and the investor-spooking earnings reports which follow. Add retirement and real estate commitments. They face an uphill battle compared to pure play EV companies. -Producer Tim

@@MissGoElectric there is plenty of misinformation in GasTroll's video. Of what relevance is the amount of electricity to run a pumpjack if that well can produce 200 barrels of oil per day, enough to propel a vehicle 200,000 miles? His Boring Company video of six years ago ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_kOvqaFBZJs.html ) has aged like milk. Given that solar and wind can produce zero electricity on a still night, storage will become a necessity if fossil fuel for generation is to be phased out. Perhaps more Australians should be concerned about the Snowy 2.0 (pumped storage) project than lithium mining or oil refineries. ($12 billion overexpenditure and seven years behind schedule). BEVs are becoming less popular in countries where electricity costs are rising (i.e. everywhere). This rise is due to the phasing out of coal-fired generation and the reluctance to go nuclear.

David: Most transportation will go electric and it will happen in my lifetime. That is what we report about on this channel. Of course, civilization will tap into ALL sources of energy for various purposes. Oil/gas, coal, wind, tidal, nuclear, solar, natural gas are part of the equation. Batteries and other energy storage solutions have already become powerful and cheap enough to bridge the production gaps of wind/solar. For most applications, batteries can get it done for less cost and with higher reliability than fossil fuels. This is a solved problem. The entire US auto business has not sold 6 million cars (of any kind) so far in 2024 but Chinese drivers have purchased more than 6 million pure EVs already this year. In Mexico, EV adoption almost doubled year over year. This is not a fad. This is progress. As for utility costs, I can easily make all of the energy I need for our household transportation with a solar array on my home's rooftop...even here in cloudy Michigan. At the moment, electricity is so cheap that I can pay retail to my utility and save 80% compared to buying gasoline. If those economics change, I'll buy panels and make my own power. I'd far rather drive an EV charged up by American coal than one which is powered by gasoline. Even in the worst-case-scenario, a coal powered ev, the ICE automobile is far less efficient. Emissions from ICE vehicles are responsible for cancer and asthma along roadways. Wars, oil spills, refining losses, transport inefficiencies, and foreign control of our economy are all reasons Americans are better off going electric. You can have the last word. I'm finished contributing to this thread. -Producer Tim cleantechnica.com/2024/07/16/mexico-ev-sales-report-90-growth-yoy-in-june-brings-ev-market-share-to-2-5/
