In Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks there's a cutscene where a monk gets his throat cut, or his face impaled or something, and he's thrown into the air smashing to the ground, where Liu Kang bends down to ask him "Are you ok?!". Anyway the timing is too comedic to not be a joke, the monk's soul IMMEDIATELY leaves his body the second the "are you okay?" line is delivered.

This is why fans criticized the "middle section" of Hitman franchise's evolution. The Hitman franchise is a perfect way to illustrate the concept of "core pillars": how the franchise started off strongly tied to them, then the consequences of drifting away from them, and the consequences of returning to them.
@MrSnaztastic
@MrSnaztastic 4 года назад
Sadly enough I think Absolution is still the best selling entry in the franchise. I'd attribute that to nearly 7 years of pent up demand for a new entry in the series than broad appeal though, and there's what I call The Colonial Marines Effect, where a series entry is so bad it negatively impacts future installments. I feel bad for both Creative Assembly and IOI, it's tough to come back from an image problem like that.

@@MrSnaztastic Well, the next entry, while pretty great as a game, was also an episodic released game with really obnoxious always online DRM. In a single player game, in a series known for it's extremely single-player nature. I'm only one case study, obviously, but I own every Hitman, besides Absolution and the 2 newer ones. I've played the demo releases of those 2, but I will not be paying any money for them until such time as I can say that I am buying them, not renting them until the servers are turned off. For me, Bad Endings in games tend to have this. Example: "OK, these creepy demon kids have something I need to survive? Fuck it, they're just as much monsters as the splicers, I just want out." Suddenly, jarringly, becomes "I shall rule rapture! Good thing I killed a load of these girl's I'd need to continue the operation of the place!"

Absolution was also really weirdly sexual compared to previous games. Yeah, the older Hitman games had a few sexual jokes/innuendos and the BDSM club in Contracts was a thing but they were the only examples in their games. Whereas Absolution has BDSM nun assassins, a target describing how he's erect while dying, a target offering a "real good reach-around" in exchange for sparing him, that same target being called 'limp-dick Lenny' for being possibly gay, another target has a personal BDSM nun sex partner who's later executed for a joke, Diana is naked in a shower in one of her two appearances, Dexter says he's going to breed an army from a 14 year old Victoria, the level section dedicated to a strip club etc.

I think it has to do with popularizing the series. They not only tried to popularize it by making it play like a generic third person shooter, but also by making an unrealistic holywood-esque plot, which includes lots of sexual imagery and jokes.

Blood money had an FBI sniffing teenage panties, that Mississippi captain watching the servers on the bathroom, that party on the CIA building with bsdm, the opera guy being a child trafficking kingpin... @@guillermo7298 Perhaps. But it was done thematically because it suits the setting. He deals with bad people who do morally questionable things. Talking about getting boner as you die seems a little out of place.
@dooder39
@dooder39 4 года назад
A few things to note though: Dexter was happy and cheering since the fact that a hitman tried to assassinate him meant that the information he got from Dom (the owner of the stripclub) about Victoria was correct. Dexter setting his apartement on fire was because he changed his mind about framing 47 with murder. Both ideas where still stupid though. And the copchase indeed made no sense. And finally 47 couldn't shoot Sanchez because he sold his Silverballers to Birdie, as a deal to keep 47 notified when someone would go after Victoria (how Dom got the info to tell Dexter is a mystery though). So 47's only stealth weapon was his piano cord. Sanchez overpowering 47 shouldn't have happened. Since in a later mission 47 can fight Sanchez in an arena (fist to fist) and kill him without breaking a sweat. But yeah, 47 actually trying to kill Sanchez was dumb. Because if he didn't, Dexter wouldn't know for sure if the info he got from Dom was valid.
@Ricardo7250
@Ricardo7250 4 года назад
I think that it was pretty dumb to make 47 attack Sanchez with the piano wire. They should have made 47 go with something more brutal like hitting the back of his neck with a blunt object and THEN Sanchez actually manages to survive because his body is enhanced. It would have been more impressive and it would have solved this plot hole.

I dunno if it’s worse because it isn’t as contradicting every next scene, but Fallout 3’s Original ending was so insultingly bad to the player’s intelligence. They changed certain irradiation immune companion’s characterizations entirely at the last minute so they could try and force you to “sacrifice” yourself because “it’s your destiny because that’s what your dad did”. It’s like the writers remembered that they wanted to have some sort of theme of sacrifice, cycle and following the path of good in the end, so they are like “oh shit, they can bring companions that nullify all of this, uhhh just make them say no it’s your destiny to kill yourself or something”. Although of course Shamus, you are very much aware of this :P
@southparkkenny2
@southparkkenny2 4 года назад
To take it even further, there were multiple viable options that the game shoots down in a nonsensical attempt to go with the sacrifice theme. Fawkes is immune to radiation and owes you his life, but refuses to 'rob you of your destiny' Sergeant RL-3 is immune to radiation but refuses Charon is HEALED by radiation but refuses, despite being brainwashed to do everything his 'employer' tells him regardless of personal morals Clover would be killed by it, but she's a literal slave and is mindbroken to follow her master's order without question. The DLC fixed this, but then that game calls you a coward for not needlessly killing yourself when better and safer options exist.

@Lucifronz
@Lucifronz 4 года назад
Though to be fair, you can still get an ending where you don't sacrifice yourself. Plus to make it worse, your sacrifice *somehow* doesn't kill you even if you choose to go in yourself. It will kill any other companion excluding Fawkes, but not you. Fallout 3's plot and structure was garbage. Like Hitman Absolution, I hadn't noticed whatsoever until someone pointed it out. I don't know how these things slip by me so easily.

The entire story of Fallout 3 is like this, fake choices that contradict what the writers want to happen I still don't understand that there are some people who say bullshit like: "blowing up megaton is a good example of choice" If fucking isn't The only choice you have is destroying a place that doesn't matter, not a single one of the npc's have important roles besides dying And these are the same people who say that the beginning of Fallout 4 where you kill a Deathclaw is made for trailers and to convince people that the game they are about to play isn't shit, and that's that fucking exact same thing with Megaton, the only reason it existis is for game journalist that only play the first 10 min of a game and for the people who think that explosions make something cool

Run For Your Life was their vertical slice / E3 demo. My thoughts is that they built that as a self-contained thing, then had to concoct some way of getting you into that scenario late in the day. Vents are a way of constricting the player's choice of moving through a level, they pop through that "gate" and enter the E3 demo. Though surely they could've written something better as an intro. My guess is that the story was rewritten at some point, likely late into development, so the team had to rush and splice ideas together quickly and came up with this. We know that Absoultion was heavily changed from its original version as it was originally way more linear and didn't even have real assassinations in gameplay. Perhaps in some early build to the game, 47 was trapped into a burning building and had to escape the cops as well. In another build, the stuff with Dextar happened or some combination

@@asscheeks3212 Crysis and Black at least have legitimate gameplay loops. The graphics are in a way what's wrong with Absolution. Hitman as a series was never known for having the best graphics. The reason is because they emphasized their gameplay loop over graphics which necessitated large levels and huge amounts of NPCs. When they went after the casual dollar with Absolution they basically almost went down a "triple A checklist". That included emphasizing graphics over performance or in this case the gameplay loop. So yeah it looks great to a degree. At least as great as linear corridors and extremely small environments CAN look at 30 FPS.

Jack Coleman 100% the truth right there, they casualized the hell out of absolution, even the story feels like micheal bay nonsense, I still remember this random mission after escaping a police station, passed it on stealth (it was hard for NO logical reason, had to look up walkthroughs because enemies ALWAYS immediately looks through your disguise, such BS) and the town is like.... ON FIRE, by just ONE truck exploding, and you didn’t even shoot that truck. So by one truck exploding, the entire town of civilians BURNED to the ground.... Why?.... To watch Agent 47 SLOWY walk away as the town behind him burns in the background so he looks cool.... I’m actually serious, this game is so god damn stupid and pretentious But hey at least Absolution brought us the Current Hitman franchises Engine... I guess?

@@asscheeks3212 I remember being so god damned frustrated with the the stupid ass idea of a disguise system in Absolution. It felt like originally there wasn't a disguise system and you were just supposed to either pure stealth it or shoot your way through but then someone said "we have to have SOME kind of a disguise system for the old fans and when they see how overrated disguises are when they play this game we can ditch it for the next game". Saying Absolution had to happen for the new ones to happen is looking on the bright side to put it mildly my friend but I admire your positivity. To me the better way to view it might be that Absolution had to happen so Absolution 2 DIDN'T happen but even that's probably optimistic. I think in truth Absolution is probably more like a complete waste of money, effort, and time. A black hole that stole hours from too many lives and made an underrated franchise seem culturally unviable, not profitable, and irrelevant. It's a fucking Greek tragedy. It's Rome burning.

I don't quite think it is a worse single cutscene, but in the last level of Assassin's Creed 2, in the vatican, you sneak up on the final boss from above and put in the jumping/falling hidden blade attack. You then start a cutscene where Ezio disarms himself and fights the final boss in a bareknuckle brawl. After you beat the boss in a way to long fight using AC 2's mediocre combat (especially bad without the lethality of your regular weapons), Ezio spares the bosses life. Gameplay context: In Assassin's Creed (especially the early ones), attacking targets with your hidden blade from above was something you worked yourself up to, infiltrating the target's location and sneaking your way to an opportune location/moment. It was the final step of your plan, the moment where the sneaking and climbing paid off. Of course it should kill the target, the game taught you that pattern again and again. Story context (Spoilers): The boss is the real pope Rodrigo Borgia, who in real life was an infamous power hungry, but corrupt pope. In the game he is additionally an amoral leader of the templars, kills people he doesn't like and is the leader of most of the targets you kill in the game, some of which are way more humanized. You don't spare targets who went along with the templar plan because their dad/uncle was a templar so they became templars, where acomplices for politcal gain etc. , but you spare the head honcho? The guy responsible? The guy who would in the next game do more evil stuff. In the end you don't even kill him, he gets murdered by his own son, the final boss of the next game...

Assassins Creed has a bunch, due to the series warped morality which I can't even understand, "lots of stories have strange audience-driven morals" but AC isn't Uncharted, where the kills are not graphic and the tone is light, at one point in AC2 Ezio tells one of his targets that he only kills other killers or something to that effect, which is totally untrue. AC3 has the lead kill his father and a bunch of unrelated people over a misunderstand despite the game making the whole thing really obvious, at the end it seems to want you to see the story as tragic but instead the hero just comes off like a psychopathic idiot who killed tons of people over a conflict that had little to do with him, or at least his main goal of avenging his murdered mother.

There's dumber than this in TV and movies every day. In the past I've seen shows like Under the Dome, The Following, and Gotham do this kind of crap in nearly every episode, and when you point out how dumb it is people "point out" how dumb you are, even though they're literally indefensibly stupid. Even worse: regarding really great or entertaining movies like The Dark Knight there are these people constantly complaining about things that make perfect sense to sound clever, but ignore countless things that are completely pointless or make zero sense at all. A lot of things that are stupid in storytelling exist in some way to save time. The worse the presentation is at misdirecting you from these flaws the worse it is altogether, *not* the more flaws it has, although if they pile up you'll notice anyway. That's why when you grow up you don't notice the Back to the Future movies constantly presenting you with competing and incompatible theories of time travel. Why would you? They explained everything just fine. It's basically what suspension of disbelief is. If you accept crap this dumb you just have too much of it.

But other than that (which is just a theory/excuse I made for poor attention to detail by the directors), yeah, this cutscene makes no damn sense whatsoever, but don't forget about the wrestling level where 47, who is infamously known by the cops, ICA, and tons of other groups of people, takes off his mask on a LIVE-ON TV-EVENT, and then proceeds to speak to him about VICTORIA on that same LIVE-TV-EVENT. Or how about when the Saints shoot a rocket that destroys 47's room and all of the other walls around it, but because 47 dodged the direct blast, he's fine? Yeah, the cutscenes were honestly terrible logic wise, but the game itself, as a standalone game, wasn't too bad. But it sure was a embarrassing Hitman game. I agree that Hitman: Absolution is the kind of a step in the wrong direction that sends you falling down the cliff. It's not great. However, i am a contrarian so... 1. 47 task is to protect Victoria. Jetser-Dexter(or whatever the name of the cowboy is) openly discuss their plan to capture her, so it's stands to reason, especially within the logic of the game, to enter the room and kill them to stop their schemes. 2. 47 gave his suppressed pistols to Birdy, so for all intent and purpose he doesn't have access to a silent weapon other than the garrote. 3. Jetser-Dexter clearly knows who Victoria is, where to find her and why she's so important, so it stands to reason that he knows about The Agency and who stole their pet project. The fact that he can recognize 47 by his tattoo just implies he's the guy in the know. Also, if you know that 47 is a bald guy with a tattoo in an unusual place that is involved in Victoria's escape, it's not exactly am unsolvable mystery who is the guy that just attempted to kill your bodyguard. 4. The fact that Jetster-Dexter knows who 47 is, doesn't mean that the police knows that. Setting him up for random murder is a safety measure in a mind of a violent psychopath. 5. Dexter's plan involves fucking over the agency that is currently on the lookout for 47. Killing him outright leaves the body that he either has to dispose of in the middle of a random hotel or puts him in the picture of the agency that makes their money by assassinating people.Burning down the room removes the traces of cowboy and friends being inside of it, potentially kills 47 in the way that doesn't obviously indicate the involvement of a third party and makes him difficult to identify. It also causes greater urgency for the police going to the scene, since shit is clearly going down. All the bad duys have to do is go to the front desk and bribe/intimidate the clerk to remove records of them being there, and if he was renting under a fake name, doesn't even have to do that. 6. Maybe thay left in such a hurry because half a tube of anti-aging cream and a phone charger is not worth being there when 47 suddenly wakes up. 7. Maybe the carpet was made out of the material that doesn't burn that well? 8. Okay, it's a continuity error but is it really that outrageous that 47 might have turned in his sleep? 9. The police force that shows up is a little excessive, but that argument can be applied to any mission in any of the games. The number of guards is always excessive because otherwise there's no gameplay there. Ludonarrative dissonance and stuff. 10. Absolution as the story is suppose to be referencing a grindhouse schlock, which is a weird choice, i give you that.

Not all game cutscenes are this dumb, but a lot of them certainly suffer from the same problem that this one does: lazy writing. The writer(s) for Hitman clearly wanted Agent 47 to have to escape from a burning hotel room, because it's cool, but how a pro like him could possibly get stuck in that situation isn't an easy question to answer. So they kludged it by taking a scenario that was clearly developing in a different direction and manipulating it to end up like they wanted it to. This was a constant problem for me while I was playing the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot. Lara Croft by the middle of the game is a competent and well-armed combatant who's been trained by an ex-soldier, but in every cutscene she's wandering around like a doof carrying only her bow. Almost everything that goes wrong during cutscenes is due to Lara making huge mistakes, hesitating for long periods while important things are happening, or just not having a gun (even though she has several). The game basically cheats in order to put you in vulnerable situations, and I found it really irritating. This kind of contrivance has always struck me as the mark of an inexperienced and unconfident writer. It's bizarre to see it crop up so often, even in games written by talented professionals.

Quiet jumping into the acid filled room on the Mother Base to get the necklace for a random kid. 2. Ishmael revealed to be Big Boss for all that time in the hospital + cigar/motorbike scene that is so lost in continuity it makes literally zero sense. 3. Venom Snake defending Quiet in the Soviet camp in the palace area that is RAIDED with random Soviet artillery, or like, entire army.

The dumbest thing about that scene is that for twenty years people have been treating a deliberately fake laugh as if it's bad because it doesn't sound real.

To this day, I still claim "If you lock me up in a room with a team of ostriches as my co-writers, I would still come with a better story than Hitman:Absolution". Gameplay and levels were great but the story... God damn story was as stupid as it gets.

I haven't played this game since 2012-2013. Dumbest story in the franchise, when I read the title I was wondering which cutscene you were referring to because there were a few massively stupid scenes (like the one with Sheriff Skirky and the church burning down).
@Dreadjaws
@Dreadjaws 4 года назад
The writers of the game seem to have genuinely tried to make this game ridiculous on purpose. By their own admission (in production videos released alongside the game, so it can't be a response based on backlash), they tried to make the characters and situations deliberately outlandish. Now, why did they decide to do this with a canon entry on an established franchise rather than a spinoff is another question. In any case, this is not a product of lack of storytelling abilities. It was a deliberate choice. Make of that what you will.
@dlakodlak
@dlakodlak 4 года назад
Outlandish and randomly nonsensical are 2 different things. MCU heroes are outlandish and stupid, and the rules of their worlds make no sense, but they act human given their circumstances. And that's why human movie goers can relate to them and like all of it despite all the ridiculousness. So obviously, the writers of HitmanAbs tried to suck on purpose and they even sucked at that.

Yeah, I watched a LP of it and it did indeed give a vibe of "we're making this as ridiculous as we can, this isn't a serious story".

The concept of Sanchez and Dexter was a bit of a turnoff for me. Sanchez being a hulk is one thing, but Dexter was more annoying than funny tbh.
@Dreadjaws
@Dreadjaws 4 года назад
@@dlakodlak Funny that you mention the MCU, because characters in those movies quite often act in ways that are just as ridiculous as what's seen in this cutscene, yet people constantly just ignore it. I guess the problem is that the MCU was a gradual thing, while this game was too quick of a change in tone from previous entries in the franchise.

People's inability to accept this as valid offers a disheartening look at humanity. Countless people looked at a game with latex bondage nuns and went "I think this game is definitely trying to be serious, but it's doing a terrible job" FACEPALM! Think about the culture you inhabit if the idea of that being intentionally ridiculous to you is only obvious, and even _kind of questionable_ in retrospect

Dunno why people talk about 'real jobs' as though RU-vid is 'easy'. Working 16 hour days 7 days a week with no holidays ever is how most of the major youtube 'celebrities' operate. It's an exhausting, irritating job with terrible job security. You'd have to be mad to think it's an 'easier' option... Plus getting anywhere on youtube seems to be largely luck driven, not skill, especially in the early days when you're a total unknown... shit job with shit pay, working shit hours with no holidays where success is down to random chance, and everyone talks about you as if you're lazy and should 'get a real job'. Yeah. Great career path huh.

Oh my god oh my god oh my god. I just realized. This exact thing happened in an RPG-Maker Trashgame that i've seen someone play through some years ago. This game was called "Das Drachenauge", made from some german guy and the Villain in that game committed murder awfully familiar to this Hitman cutscene. He stabbed the protagonists parents to death, made it look like an accident but ended up burning the place anyway, completely killing any evidence that it was an accident in the first place.

Thank you for these videos. You kinda have my frame of thinking. When I watch a movie or play a game I understand how to write well, and understand realism needed to fit the genre of the story. I haven't played Red Dead Remdemtion but I did admire their way of writing and conversational writings. They seem to fit the genre very well.

There is a really bad cutscene in Mortal Kombat vs DC, in a conversation that I THINK was between Green Lantern and Captain Marvel. You’ll know it when you see it, because they say “the rage” and “the gods” like eleven times each.
