Life saver! Did this on an engine to trans dowel. Not a blind hole, but filled with grease from the backside, threaded in a bolt to seal, and it worked perfectly. Thanks!

You might want to add a little to this video. You can't leave the grease in the bolt holes you could potentially crack the block when bolting the heads on. So be sure to blow all the grease out and clean hole with solvent.
@ricktruelove
@ricktruelove 3 года назад
Yes. And the drill bit turned around and twisted in clockwise by hand and pulled straight out would help get the bulk of the grease out before blowing with compressed air.

this method also doesn't work if the holes aren't blind (aka go all the way into the water jacket) like on some engines.

Wow this is awesome. Wish I could have seen this before trying a pair of needle nose vise grips but at least I knew I shouldn’t have done that. My dowel pin is in the bellhousing and has a hole on both sides but I can simply just have someone hold a block of wood on that side with their body weight. I’ll have to find something to stick in the pin and see if I can get my brand new but not working grease gun to work but that’s another headache.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt Год назад
Yeah with the whole Going Clear through the bellhousing you're gonna have a hard time removing it using this method because of the hydraulic pressure that is created by using this method is just gonna simply push whatever you're trying to hold on the other side. If the whole goes clear through you might be able to use like a round punch and drive the and drive the dowel pin out.

Thank you for this video. I had to remove two dowel pins from a Subaru block and the first one I did the old fashioned way with vice grips and a drill bit. Needless to say that one is completely destroyed. I thought to myself that there has to be a better way to remove these things. Came across this video and voila, the second dowel pin doesn't have a scratch on it. Vice grip method = buying new dowel pins; grease method = holy shit, I can't believe that worked.

I was going to get a new HO engine but then was recommended rockerlocks on a forum. (Rockerlocks dot com) it seems like a band-aide but do you think it’ll last a couple thousand miles? @@martinbuilt Two problems I've ran into - the drill bit size 3.5mm is slightly too small, the 4mm is slightly too big And possibly a bigger problem, even if i can find the right drill bit end (prob 3.7mm, 3.8mm) the dowel itself is a sprung teeth type one, so that it can ordinarily be squeezed to install or removed. So probably, even if a drill bit fits, the pneumatic energy will be lost through that long side of the dowel. Not enough of the dowel is sticking up over the engine block (almost none of it is). IT sheared off somehow. It's a head scratcher. I have spare dowels to install, but can't get that current one out :l
