If I remember the timeline of events, sometime after If the Emperor Had. Text to Speech device became popular, Games Workshop retconned the Custodes so they weren’t just super depressed, standing around without armor. Malcador the Sigillite was Emperors closest aid and advisor. He sacrificed his life by sitting in the Golden Throne while Emperor left to fight against Horus in his flagship that was in orbit above Earth. Or Terra as it is known.

As an answer to the question you had earlier nux about the webway. The webway was not humanity’s way of faster than light grave that got cut off. Humanity before and during the imperium had to do warp travel, which is basically flying through actual hell with a shield around your ship to keep whatever is outside the ship like demons or who knows what out. When the Eldar accidentally created a new chaos god by attempting to preform every r34 tag at once, the gods in Warhammer live in the warp which is the same hell place used for fast travel. The new god went on a rampage and this created not only the eye of terror but it cut off all space travel through the warp for about 4000-10000 years. The web way is how the eldar travel between planets and is safer than warp travel by a lot so the emperor wanted to make one for humanity so fast travel would not get turned off again. Unfortunately the Horus heresy had begun and Magnus tried to warn the emperor by psychically telling him that Horus turned traitor. Unfortunately one of the chaos gods tricked him into blow up a hole in the webway to get to the emperor which allowed demons to bum rush Terra through the webway that the emperor was working on. As for magnus the emperor sent orders to have him arrested but Horus altered the orders. Changing the message from arrest magnus to kill Magnus. This ended with the space wolves attacking Magnus’s home planet forcing him and his sons to flee into the eye of terror where all of them fell to chaos.

Attached to a nothing burger.... yeah the astronomicon is tooooottally a nothing burger, its not like its the only way humans can use intergalactic travel successfully The webway is not the warp. They are 2 seperate things. The webway is an artificial pocket dimension thing the eldar developed, the emperor tried to create his own webway so humans wouldnt have to deal with demons and the warp, and thats when magnus(while trying to warn him about horus' betrayal) popped in suddenly and caused a "malfunction" that essentially ruined the whole project. Then horus attacked earth and the emperor had to leave the astronomicon(gold throne) to deal with him so his best friend, malcador, volunteered to use his own psychic power(cause he was the strongest human psyker next to the emperor) to keep the astromnicon active and he managed to hold out just long enough to to buy time for the emperors body to put back on the throne, and malacdor died. Kinda fuxked up and funny but sad at the same time

The very first version of the Custodes models and art had them looking like the Spartans from 300 but with cone helmets. That model is used in a few places in TTS, usually scenes with a large number of custodes on screen at once.

You are right that if the Emperor died he would come back much stronger than the current state he is in, but there are several really bad things that would happen if he died, he is keeping the warp portal to Earth that Magnus made closed and powering the Astronomicon, the thing that humanity uses to know where they are going while travelling through the warp, so if he dies demons would invade Terra and nobody would be able to safely travel through the warp anymore because of the demon invasion thing Vulcan set up a dead man's switch that would blow up all of Terra so that if the Emperor died the demons couldn't claim Terra. So if the Emperor dies, Terra would be destroyed and humanity can no longer safely travel through the warp destroying the Imperium and most likely humanity.

Best way to describe Malcador is to think of him as the guy willing to do anything for the Emperor, especially all the stuff Big E really doesn't want to do. Malcador was a member of the illuminati and a powerful pysker who joined the Emperor when Big E kicked in the door to his old organization. He's been around for a very long time and knew buttloads of old, hidden secrets and lore. His mind equaled the capacity of the Emperor and they often honed plans by doing thought puzzles against each other. Malcador killed 2 of the primarchs for unknown reasons, but keeps the skulls as part of his office's throne. He founded the Inquisition, brought the Assassins into the fold, and established pretty much all the shady shit on Terra nearly singlehandedly. While being a mortal man, his gifts gave him the ability to take hits from enraged Primarchs and shake it off after being sent flying, withstand the full psychic might of the Emperor and his presence, actually use the Golden Throne to hold back invasions from the realm of Chaos onto Terra while Big E went off to deal with the whole Horus nonsense, and acted as the shifty uncle to quite a few of the primarchs.

Webway is just better warp travel without the requirement of diving into hell to transport across the galaxy

The theory he was going to eliminate the space marines and primarchs is grounded that he wanted a ruling council of humans and malcador was tasked with seeking them out. Malcador also created the grey knights and hid their home. Malcador was a messenger of the emperors will and faced primarchs on his own. Malcador is a badass in a lot of ways

He sat there and took the direct stare from all 4 chaos gods. He knew he would be unmade by that, but he believed in the dream of the imperium. Malcador THE HERO was the best bro in all creation.

There is one thing that is freaking hillarious and tragic about the whole webway thing, if almost the entire galaxy of humans could travel between each other without almost ever needing to know demons and the warp existed. Meaning the power of the warp would have diminished so much and resulting in almost no one knowing about or interacting with it being barely able to reach out as humans werent psykers at this point. Like almost everything chaos related in their universe was ao freaking close to being solved before it had a chance to happen to humanity with how he was destroying religion as well as cult stuff would naturally be viewed as a possible source of chaos/something weird and fricked up and worthy of calling the police about.

No the web way was the elder originally and technically it uses a sup pocket of the warp itself basically like making a tunnel going from one continent to another through the ocean. The ocean in this case being the warp for the example

The Webway project the Emperor was working on was MEANT to give humankind access to the Webway. The webway was a alternate pocket dimension inside the warp (created by the Eldar), that was cut off from the warp itself, and would have allowed humanity to safely travel the stars without having to cross or come in contact the warp, and thus further cut off humanity from the power of Chaos. Essentially think of it as a giant tunnel burrowed through the warp, that have allowed safe travel across the galaxy. It was the Emperor's plan to connect the galaxy without ever having to enter the warp itself, and thus almost entirely negate the warp ever entering this universe. Unfortunately Magnus trying to alert the Emperor of Horus's treachery blasted a hole in the webway, which for lack of a better words turned the Webway entrance under the Imperial Palace into a warp rift straight into hell, which Chaos Demons flooded through. The Emperor and the Custodes went to seal and cut off this warp rift and the tide of demons, but in the interim, Malcador was the only one who could keep the Astronomicon alive, and running, as it would burn out almost any being alive in seconds by the sheer power running through it. The Emperor and Magnus were the only members of humanity with enough psychic might to survive sitting on the golden throne for any great period (this was one of the reasons for Magnus' creation, he was meant to share the load with the Emperor). Malcador was the third strongest human psyker in existence after these two. Unfortunately, by the time the Emperor was able to return to Malcador, Malcador was dying and disintegrated to dust in his presence.

Well, to be fair, there was a theory going around a few years back that Big E was kept alive not just due to the fact that thousands of souls were sacrificed to him everyday, but the fact that he was inadvertently forced into becoming a Fifth Warp God of Faith. Or Order, due to the Chaos Gods and named Daemons calling Big E 'The Anathema'. In the Warp, every soul possessing species has a signature for every soul possessing individual, and the thoughts both conscious and subconscious, dreams, fears, nightmares, and emotions of that individual become reality in the Warp. The theory goes that Big E is effectively kept alive because *trillions* of Humans believe in His continued survival, and with the above knowledge of the Warp's function, this keeps him alive enough to absorb the souls of the thousand daily psykers to keep him alive, and the souls of his faithful when they die. Thus potentially making him even more powerful than before Horus put him on life support after a few thousand years of this.
