The Evolution of Language, linguistic models

In this video John Grinder presents an interesting metaphor for how human beings evolved from the naming function to forming linguistic models for the relationships between the objects and people being named. Linguistic representations form our secondary maps which code our experience, it's on these maps the NLP language patterns are applied!

if words doesn't affect your emotions, also a punch in the face, because after all, in a few minutes the pain will go away, and what it remains is only a thought of that moment. Bah! So this is deep state of mind, satori, may be, not real life.

grinder uses self awareness techniques to denude oneself of troublesome but essential emotions so that one may fit easier into the cog of the wheel, without any appreciable increase of personal knowledge of the outside world.

I'm having a hard time following. "My teenager made me angry when they arrived late." The cause "teenager" and effect "made angry". The words aren't what what made someone angry, but the fact that they were late. Unless I guess he's specifically taking about the "now" and the memory/thought of the teenager arriving late was the thing that made them angry? In which case, I totally agree, because you're giving power to the words to control how you're currently feeling? Am I understanding that right?

Hmmmm Gork Clever.... and while the idea of not letting words affect our feelings seems appealing~ what and when would we let words affect our feelings? When would we know to let certain signals in? Grandma said she loves me 'oh isn't that cute the deluded old lady is muttering sounds of affection'

So if I go out and kick a cat, I'll turn into a sabre-toothed tiger?
@RSEFX
@RSEFX 3 года назад
I think what he is saying is that it is best to make sure that the cat isn't a sabre tooth tiger before you kick it. Also that water is not a rock, and if you think it is then cavemen will laugh at you. I'm sure that I am correct about this. What other possibility is there? (Well, maybe that kicking a sabre tooth tiger in the balls will send you flying farther than you ever imagined possible?)

Like the metaphor of the cat vs. the ball. Interesting idea: the cat will move according to their experience, the ball basically responds to your force.

perhaps music became, evolutionary, an attempt to reinsert the experiential value of perception back into those original implicit processing heuristic. but perception is not knowledge. that is why a holographic language is needed. Take Hebrew;

@RSEFX

I believe he is saying that if you go around kicking cats you deserve to have your balls kicked (figuratively in the case of 50 percent of the population). (I base this on the presumption he is discussing cats that are alive rather than, say, road kill. In the case of the latter, he'd likely just say you are crazy and no amount of NLP will help since it will No Longer Pertain.)

Bandler is doing NLP on you. Big difference. His model of teaching is centered on what he calls installation through nested loops. You really need to go to or watch full seminars to get the effect. Bandler does have many short videos where he describes stuff clearly. Just look for videos that are interviews, not chunks of his seminars. Those chunks are also usually not released by him... [And his older stuff, e.g. Creating Therapeutic Change, explain the techniques in painstaking detail.]

I agree with what you state and in many ways what Mr. Grinder is proposing here. But certain scenarios come to mind. What about mourning, or trauma, or rape. I know we have choice to look at these things differently, but how do you think he would say we should relate to these things? I am just confused.

Grinder is pointing out the reality that how we feel about words is a choice!The reaction in our brain is INSIDE US, but a hit is a physical reality!We (at least some of us)can remain dispassionate to even the worst news!

In a nutshell (or thimble, or whatever tiny thing), it's an overly-complicated way (in my opinion) of thinking about the truth and meaning of the old phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me".

Great lesson, 😁 I'd argue though that the Metanarrative, or Ideology, that a person uses to describe life's purpose and meaning HAS PHYSICS! Pride(reinforcement+), Shame(degradation-), Arrogance(artificial inflation×z), and Depression(perpetual division by zero). The physics are just about Self-Worth, and thusly cause Emotional movements. Ergo, words can hurt when they sufficiently attack your worldview; And some attacks(like loss) cannot be avoided, because they come from what you define yourself with. There's no defense against beloved ones attacking your vulnerable points with words.(unless you choose "forever alone"😢) There's only recovery.
@thesurvivorssanctuary6561
@thesurvivorssanctuary6561 5 лет назад
Even our tribal ancestors without speech were vulnerable to Enotional Attacks. It's just, while those attacks were disapproving and/or angry grunts, in the modern age we can be devastated by only two words, "You're Fired!", or only one word: ..."no."... 😘
@thesurvivorssanctuary6561
@thesurvivorssanctuary6561 5 лет назад
I'd argue that our emotional defenses should easily be up against "strangers" insults, because they have little significance in "the play", that is our EGO. Srsly, 99.99999% of people will have the same effect on our lives as BACKGROUND CHARACTERS do on a Protagonists story. They don't even get a "one dimensional" expository line! However, our "supporting cast", (family, friends, and heroes) make up the majority of our Emotional Constellation. These relationships DEFINE significance, and thus Memory intensity and allocation. Essentially, we are mostly an amalgamation of our Loved Ones Beliefs and Values plus Our Individual Memories(it's kind of like these people(and the literal THINGS that bind us) are the FIRST branches of our memory Tree.). tl;dr Strangers aren't important, so they can't hurt us(unless we have low self-esteem, and require validation to "get up on our feet" at all). But, Loved Ones and our shared experience makes us who we are, so they can always hurt us(even using a single word, eg. "NO!", "STUPID!", and "WORTHLESS!" etc...)
