I'm so bummed out that The Creator is not gaining any traction. We need more original science fiction. Well, we need more original movies in general, but sci-fi is a good start.

It bothers me when original movies flop, even if they're not my thing. You just know they're being used as evidence against making more. Much safer, apparently, to blow $400m on the rights to a 50-year old franchise...

It just looks like another version of a story we've seen a thousand times. The reviews aren't great and the story doesn't grab me. This show was one of the few things that I hung onto throughout the pandemic when I was really on edge, even though it was a reminder that we didn't have movies for a while. It's essential viewing for me now, and this month I'm leaving my home of 17 years to live in another country so I suspect it'll get me through that too.

I've been dying to see it, but my local theater isn't even showing it and I can't justify the travel costs to go to one that has it. I imagine other theaters are also not bothering to screen it and that could be cutting into its box office.

From the marketing I saw, it seemed to lean heavily religious-themed, but i could be wrong. The marketing made it seem you were in for a depressing film. And you really felt how looong it was (I don't mind long epic films when they're paced well). Maybe it needed a different star? Maybe the script needed edits/ tweaking?

Personally, the trailers really put me off. They were the most generic sci-fi blockbuster montage possible. Sure, it looked pretty, but they basically play beat by beat to the "Film Title trailer" parody video by Australnauts here on RU-vid. So if I don't know much about the project, the people involved don't really get my attention, and don't see anything interesting in the trailers, I'm just gonna wait for people's reactions or the inevitable streaming release. I wager many people think that way.

Caught Exorcist and She Came to Me on Monday. I usually watch bad reviews of films I plan on seeing just to lower my expectations, and managed to get Exorcist: Believer up to 'meh'. Makes me wonder how I would have felt if I built up my expectations. 'She Came to Me' was easily the better film, but isn't your mother's Rom-Com. A bit weird and art housey, but still accessible. Peter Dinklag was great. Wish the film got more notice.

Sorry, I'm gonna share something kinda random. Exorcist 2 was released on June 17th, 1977. Star Wars was released on May 25th, 1977. Actor James Earl Jones was in both films. Star Wars was expected to be a huge flop. But Jones had little to worry about. At the time David Prowse was credited as playing Darth Vader because he was the man in the costume. No one would know he was in a silly space movie that was sure to bomb!! Exorcist 2 was expected to be a runaway smash. While it did break opening weekend records, people hated it so much, they threw things at the screen and left before it was over demanding refunds. His name was featured on the posters and in the credits. That year he was in the highest grossing film of all time that was nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture and practically no one knew he was even in it. That year he was also in a movie that critics were saying was the WORST movie of the year, while audiences called it THE WORST movie...EVER!! and THAT was the movie he was credited with. Could you imagine!?!?

In the two largest theaters with 24 and 16 screens, Taylor has over 50% of the screens. In the next two, 10 and 8 screens, Taylor has over 45%. And in the smallest, which only has 6 screens, Taylor has exactly 37.5% of the showings. Seeing The Creator have such a drastic drop-off is disheartening. Such an amazing movie that, unfortunately, we'll not see the likes again for awhile because of the message Hollywood received by people not going to see it. @David-kd4qr
@David-kd4qr 9 месяцев назад
I think The Creator falls into the classic Hollywood sci-fi trap. You have to be different enough not to be generic and uninteresting, but also be generic enough that your mom can watch it and not get confused. This can be done well (Aliens: Protect kid from monster) but almost always falls flat. It's the same reason so many books that become films get ruined. You have to make it so simple that it becomes uninteresting. The Creator was uninteresting to me. It felt like the film version of a much more interesting book. I also saw marketing for it daily for about a month before release. Like 10% of my RU-vid ads were The Creator.
@JessieBanana

I was excited to see the Creator, but honestly was really disappointed by. I was much less sci-fi and more philosophical, and was very stylized, but in such a way many things made no sense. I realized about halfway through that I wasn’t going to get any answers to the world building type questions and that that focus was much more on feelings and the abstract concept of humanity. Oddly enough that hyper emotional-thought focus made it hard for me to connect. I just couldn’t sink into it. I see what they’re saying but felt meh about it. It’s one of the biggest disappointments for me in a while. I didn’t watch any reviews prior and I sort of regret it.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Creator. I didn't mind the homages and references to other sci fi epics as its hard NOT to be compared to them. I'm not sure who said i, but i heard once that there's only so many genres and stories to tell that your bound to start resembling others. I think authenticity is what balances it, since originality is hard to come by. That's not to say there aren't examples of originality but you'd be hard pressed not to be able to draw comparisons to other projects form that. We all consume entertainment in form or another so it would make sense writers/filmmakers would have a reference or a call back or even be inspired by another film. An example i could use is the exorcist (being the most relevant at the moment). Arguable one of the greatest horror/possession movie of all time. Any movie since dealing in the same genre or theme has paid homage, whether cleverly or not, back to that. I don't find a problem with it unless done distastefully, which plenty has done. I think it speaks to the film that is being referenced and its status in Pop Culture. I also find the juxtaposition of people who don't like when their movie is 'too deep' vs the ones that think its 'too shallow' fascinating if not a little annoying. the people around me always seem to fall to either one category then complain about the exact opposite (It wasn't deep enough, says the one that hates when its too deep or 'its too deep or confusing' says the one that hates movies that has no subtlety) there is indeed a middle ground, where some of best stories lie, but its still debated on where that exactly is. I was hoping The Creator would enthused people more and prove a point to the studios that ppl want better stories. but the battle between original/authentic over existing/nostalgic IPs continues

You know a film has no buzz when it's not on any torrent sites/The Creater, The Exorcist "As Many GODS As There Are Believers"...

I thought The Creator was a good film. I thought the world building was excellent but I didn't fall in love with the story like Dan did. For me the main character wasn't very appealing and the relationship between him and the child wasn't developed enough during the film that I bought the bond at the end. I did think it looked amazing and I really really dug the world building and i would recommend going to see it but in terms of best sci-fi of the 21st century, I don't think the story/emotion reaches the levels of Children of Men, District 9, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 as one of the best. Seriously though, that world building was amazing.

I just don't understand why anyone would spend a cent on the Exorcist franchise. It'd be like buying Amityville. Just rip it off like everyone else does. $400 million to get the old lady back for 5 minutes I guess.

Also good on Kraven for moving because it would take several natural disasters for Taylor Swifts thing to not be top of box office lol

ok but... I'd be interested in Exorcist Express... at least it would be different.

Dumb money was Dumb money on 3 fronts; about dumb money, money spent and money earned. For the creator it was pretty good it's a shame, but at least it was made for 80M so not a huge loss

I still very much want to see The Creator. It's just difficult when you're a parent to a child and need to find a sitter. I did look up show times but all of them are far too late in the day; 9 morning showing would've been ideal but not in my area.

Why do you say Saw X, but you pronounce Saw VI as Saw 6, and not Saw Vee-Eye? X & VI are both roman numerals that stand for numbers.

Some consider being shocked and scared entertainment. I think I give horror just as much coverage as every other genre, but it's October. You're going to see a huge surge in discussion about horror films because that's what's being released.

I saw The Creator today. Good movie, but plot holes a-plenty. Very, very, very cliche too.

Saw The Creator yesterday. Best sci-fi/action movie since Inception. An instant classic of the genre. Wish it had a better title and more star power to attract audiences.

I agree about the star power. I think it would have been more successful with a stronger lead. I kept thinking Tom Hardy would have been an interesting choice.
