There were a million things that were awesome about COTA. Storm's Hailstorm super was ⬇️↘️➡️+Start. Longest startup time ever and did insane chip damage.
Having Akuma actually be in X-Men's story would be kinda funny-he obviously wouldn't be a hero, but I imagine if the villains tried to recruit him, he'd just kick all of their asses, too.
He seems like the type who Wolverine would know from a long time ago. "Yeah, that's the crazy monk dude I ran into in Malaysia in the 60s! He's nuts, bub!" "Hmph, so you survived my Raging Demon. Interesting, you wild beast!"
How ironic that Akuma started the "throw a character into a different game thats completely separated from the game's world" and did this twice, breaking both games. Such a fitting Akuma moment
Akuma having difficulty fighting against super-powered mutants is basically how it would go in the comic books. He can still potentially win but he has to work harder than he would against regular Street Fighter characters.
Bro pretty much every Street fighter character will have trouble fighting most of the xmen characters just like woth the capcom side against marvel. Like the power levels of Marvel characters in general are just on a whole different scale compared to anyone in capcom I mean a team with Shuma Gorath, Dormammu & Dr.Strange can solo the entire capcom roster.
Pretty big. I'd love it if we got a mini arc or series involving MvC or just X-Men and Street Fighter but with the main enemy being Gill or another SF boss given how their game had an X-Men villain as the main bad, make the show's main villain from Street Fighter. That or Cyber-Akuma.
I think Akuma's appearance in X-Men was what sparked rumors that Akuma was hidden in other Capcom games like Chronicles of Mystara, Alien vs. Predator, and Resident Evil 2.
Pretty sure Fatal Fury Special is the first game to include a crossover character in Fighting Game history. Hell, Ryo Sakazaki is the unsung hero of the FGC because SNK quite literally invented super moves, taunts, crossovers and more through him. Fatal Fury Special crossover inspired the King of Fighters and Super Smash Brothers.
Things to consider: Fighter's History had Karnov, who was in another Data East game. This came out before Fatal Fury Special and should be considered the first example of a crossover character. However, Karnov wasn't playable in the original arcade game, only in the home port via code and the sequel. Fatal Fury Special: Ryo is first playable crossover character. COTA: Akuma is the first actual _guest_ character (also playable) because Akuma is not native to X-Men in any way and is owned by a different company. After all, Ryo/Art of Fighting is in the same universe as Fatal Fury and Karnov is owned by Data East who made Fighter's History.
@@ShinUltima Facts! You are a man of culture 👍 Glad to see people who still remembers the Fighter's History series (made by DATA EAST) Nowadays people only remember Fighter's History for two things: The story of when Capcom sued Data East for plagiarism (and they lost). And Makoto Mizoguchi, who years later appeared as a guest in The King of Fighters Maximum Impact Regulation A Fighting game fans should respect Fighter's History, if Capcom had won in court, the entire fighting game genre would have been monopolized by them.
@@ShinUltima Karnov is... a bit different. It did still beat Fatal Fury Special to the punch, but keep in mind - evcn though he had a first appearance, Karnov isn't so much _a character_ from _a single series_ as he is _The Data East Character._ He was practically their mascot. Saying he was "in another Data East game" is the understatement of a lifetime. They put him in *most of* their games lol.
I found KOF 94 (August 25th, 1994) came out before X-Men: Children of the Atom (December 8th, 1994). The franchises represented in KOF 94 (Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier) were made by the same company. So KOF 94 was the first fighting game that had an in-house crossover.
You can get to Magneto as Akuma in the arcade version (Magneto will ALWAYS be after Juggernaut), but your beginning opponent has to be someone specific. You have to fight against either Sentinel, Spiral, Iceman, or Storm as your first opponent. So you can’t start against Omega Red, or Colossus. I may be missing who else you can’t start against with, someone you play against and your final opponent will end up being Iceman. Edit: Ok, so I saw a playthrough with the starting opponent as Omega Red, and he still ended up getting Magneto at the end. So maybe it’s just random chance you actually get to fight against Magneto. I’ll have to do some more digging.
You have to win most fights with a Super Finish. Juggernaut should appear as your 7th opponent, then the 8th is Magneto. If you cannot reach any of those, or Juggs is the 8th, or won't appear at all. You can fight against Akuma if you do the mentioned before AND didn't lose any rounds. He'll appear as the 6th opponent.
It reminds me of the 16 Bit X-Men game. If you played it on Easy, you couldn't fight Magneto and got a game over screen telling you he doesn't fight weaklings. Seems oddly relevant here.
The 1st time I saw Akuma perform a Ragin Demon...was while playing arcade mode X-Men vs Street Fighter. I Thought the game broke then I saw his back pose!!! GREATEST CHILDHOOD MEMORIES EVER
Mine as fighting him in 3rd Strike and him killing me with it. Seeing the pose and all that. I just stopped playing through the arcade ladder after that to scream to my brother about it.
This isn't the only time that Akuma would be a fighting game guest character, In Cyberbots, We get a humanoid combat mech version of Akuma called Zero Akuma, And he gets added to Tekken 7 and is part of the games storyline.
With CPS2 sprite modding becoming more accessible, I really hope someone mods his Alpha sprites in so he fits in a little better. Also fun fact, Akuma was included due to the contract stipulation, as Marvel required Capcom included a Street Fighter character in the game as part of their agreement.
Karnov is actually the OG guest character in Fighting Games. Karnov was DATA EAST's mascot. He was a guest and also the final boss in Fighter's History (1993) Nowadays people only remember Fighter's History for two things: The story of how Capcom sued Data East for plagiarism (and they lost) And Makoto Mizoguchi Fighting game fans should respect Fighter's History, if Capcom had won in court, the entire fighting game genre would have been monopolized by them.
Shoryu Rengoku (AKA Goshoryu Counter) is actually kinda busted in a way. It costs meter, but if it connects it actually gives you more meter back than it initially cost.
I knew Akuma was in COTA, but I had no clue he doesn't fight Magneto. I guess because Magneto has dialogue with the other characters before you fight him and Capcom didn't want this to be the first time Akuma speaks?
Maybe some small talk and playing a chapter or two involving Akuma? Maybe he has a saved file or some shit or did a playthrough of this game a while back.
I'm unsure he will because he hates those games (the other being Project X Zone 1 & 2) as stated on a stream years ago where he flat out says it sucks and sure it was on his stream intro and outro but those were the best part to him & Simmons as the rest of the game sucks to them as they were disappointed it wasn't a fighting game but it would be interesting if he somehow briefly mentions it
@@Mecha82 It kinda is but I can't totally fault them given how Namco X Capcom sounds less impressive as an tactical RPG (ain't a bad one even with how ridiculously long the game is) compared to the usual fighting game idea that most folks would've preferred. Like I tried PXZ 1 and 2 and even after playing through hours of it, I would've preferred either a fighting game or something similar to Subspace Emissary.
@@Mecha82 yeah its very shallow much like the Ex-Super Best Friends Play going "Its the characters you want in the game that you don't" meanwhile I dispise these games for not understanding what makes a SRPG, and underutilized all the franchises in the gameplay like X is never allowed to use his armor sets he has, the God Eater 2 characters can't go into Blood Rage & Kiryu plus Majima don't even have the tech that makes them feel like they're in Yakuza, it makes me question how did they screw all the properties up when these were done by experienced developers that know how to make an RPG, those being Banpresto (Super Robot Wars) & Monolith Soft (Xenogears/Xenosaga/Xenoblade)
God, I remember spending hours watching guys at the campsite arcade play this when I was a kid. Family would rent out a relative's camper for a week down the beach, I'd spend all my time riding the bike around the campground and often end up at the general goods store which had an arcade in the rear. I never had enough quarters or skill to play but enjoyed watching others do so (including a couple of boys who were always cursing in French).
The first big crossover I know of in video games was NES Tetris. It featured Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Kid Icarus, Samus, Link and Donkey Kong well before Smash Bros. brought them back together. Granted they are bit cameos relegated to high rank clears, sure. Earlier than that though, Bomberman crossing over with Lode Runner was weird.
I love that y'all make a production out of the Legacy videos. I would have settled for a quick arcade playthough so this is real nice. Tho this reminded me, I don't think I could ever beat Juggernaut as a kid. I mean he wasn't playable so you just rarely saw him lol
We did, sorta: Marvel Superheroes was basically COTA2. Of course, it had a very different cast, though still X-Men heavy (4/10 playable non-boss characters are X-characters). I'd kill for a MSH2.
Ha, I thought for sure that bit at the end with the character portraits getting the Akuma symbol over them was gonna build to a Days Of Future Past cover homage. Someone should do that...
It's crazy that they put Akuma in a X-MEN fighting game. They just used his sprite from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. He even looks small compare to the larger sprite designs. Akuma alone inspired Capcom to create X-MEN Vs Street Fighter.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero in NBA jam might of been the first crossovers. But since it's just their heads ( and names) stuck on the genetic body I'm not sure it counts. Thought it's worth a mention, though.
Fighting him in X-Men VS. Street Fighter is more of a reward for not screwing up. It's more certain that you'll run into him in arcade mode than putting in a secret input because back then, we had no internet to find that out. You might skim across Tips & Tricks and happen to catch how to unlock him, but that was it.
This was originally set up as a sales mechanism and a pairing between SSF2T because it rewarded the best players in the arcade. You can fight him as a hidden boss as well following similar requirements.
The reason Akuma is in Children of the Atom at the time was cause when Capcom and Marvel had their game license deal, one of that deal was to make an X-Men fighting game. Capcom said for them to agree to that deal they need to also include a Street Fighter character in the game which Marvel agree. Fortunately that character had to be Akuma cause it just make sense. For one Akuma is just an avatar character at the time who had no identity yet and had no storyline with anything yet so it would make sense for him to be in the game after his multiple cameos in Street Fighter II V anime and Street Fighter II The Animated Movie.
This was my first Arcade game I put ALOT of quarters into! I had always just played around with Neo Geo games, Samurai Showdown, etc... but man did I love COTA 😊
I had the DOS version of this game growing up. I had very little knowledge of Street Fighter so when I first got that secret fight, i assumed it was some kind of X-Men character i just didn't know yet.
The thing that was awesome about this is this isn’t the usual alpha sprite they used for the crossover games …..it’s like his street fighter 2 sprite but more detailed I always loved that about this game
Its crazy how much crossovers akuma has appeared over the years x men tekken and the list keeps on pounding. every fighting character has history behind him that's for sure
I remember fighting Magneto with Akuma, but it was on the PSX version. I forgot what the dialog was, but I remember Akuma doing his taunt at Magneto and his Acolytes. How wild would it have been if Akuma did show up in the Fatal Attractions storyline? (which the game was based off) Like, Akuma appearing on Asteroid M from warping too hard and performing an Instant Hell on Magneto moments before he rips the Adamantium off of Wolverine's bones. Just Akuma having the ability to travel to different realities would be cool. It would make his history in Tekken make sense.
the fact that akuma was just soo cool, he just kept showing up everywhere to fight any one and everyone. spaming air fireballs in games where they arent op
This and Darkstalkers were the beginnings of Capcom doing wild things with their fighting games. EDIT: You DO fight Magneto, but only in the Saturn version.
The lack of hitstun here is how I feel whenever I play fighting games. Like I hit a jumping heavy kick and it seems like Zangief just shrugs it off and SPDs me before my character even touches the ground.
Oh, and when you play with this version of shin tru Akuma, he's really a glass cannon. If you do his taunt, it goes into an instant dragon punch, but it's flamed up and eat some of your meter to do so..
if you beat alpha with Akuma, he says he goes to another dimension to find a better challenge. And this is it, and it's shin true, coma at that. Pretty much set off a big industry of crossover games for Marvel and Capcom after that.
Akuma looked awesome in " X- MEN: Children Of The Atom" as a secret guest character. This game was a prelude to 1996's "X-MEN vs. STREET FIGHTER" crossover video which, also starred Akuma. Akuma in the sequel wasupgraded from the Super Street Fighter II Trurbo version to the Street Fighter Alpha series version of Akuma whuch, wasnice. Akuma was faster and stronger in thr sequel XM vs. SF and MSH vs. SF games.
