The Great Mirrorless Camera Autofocus Shootout! (GH4, X-T1, A6000, E-M1)

It seems like every 13 minutes, another mirrorless camera is announced that promises the 'World's Fastest Autofocus'. We decided to cut through all the hype and pit the fastest mirrorless cameras against each other, and we threw in a Nikon D4S, just to make it interesting. To really put these cameras through a stress test we went to Wildrose Motocross Park with a Fuji X-T1, Sony A6000, Olympus OMD E-M1 and Panasonic GH4!

Loved the video!!! FYI in the future if you do more shooting like this you never want to shoot on the outside of a turn. I shoot a lot of off road racing and if that racer blows the corner you're dead... Looking at the a6000 and this video was exactly what I was looking for, thanks again.

I always enjoy their reviews! FWIW, Here are what they are really saying in Japanese: X-T1: Some of my relatives think that I'm dead. Happy New Year! E-M1: If he doesn't want to be with us, he doesn't need to. GH4: What are you going to do for the weekend? I understand Japanese a little, but am not very good at it yet. I love cats! Alpha 6000: I need a lot of sleep (or water). I am color-blind.

Thanks for the time and effort in putting this video review together. I really enjoy seeing the progression of technology in the bodies and formats. As a purely DSLR guy at this point this gives me a good idea as to the capabilities of the new crop of mirrorless cameras that are emerging as well as their potential now and in the near future. It's hard to please everyone and you will always have people making suggestions, tips, complaints, etc. about comparing this body versus that body and this setting vs that, but taken as a whole, you guys did a great job. Thanks again for your time and efforts!!

Great video, these are the kind of reviews I want to see. Real-world impressions on usability, not just MTF charts and pixel peeping. As an X-T1 owner, I am really hoping that some firmware updates down the road will make this a more viable action camera, particularly with the telephotos Fuji has listed on their lens roadmap.

Great job guys! I'm a very happy X-T1 owner and am not surprised by your results. I've found the 55-200 to be a bit sluggish. I'm just happy to see that it was able to lock focus and track. Hopefully the upcoming lenses will improve the performance. If I was in the business of shooting fast action I'd still be carrying a DSLR, which, as you have shown, still has a firm hold on the top spot. Thanks for another great video.

For the xt1 you should use a UHS-II card. Plus the 55-200 lens is not very quick in the AF department. The soon to be released 50-140 2.8 should put the xt1 up there. Can't wait to see the review for that lens. It is in my wish list!

I think at this point, for almost anyone choosing a new mirrorless camera, the choice comes down to the look and style of the camera, video features, and lenses. The bodies themselves don't seem to matter very much. Heck, even the lenses are all good. Photographers could pick up any one of these cameras and make fantastic pictures right away. Gives me hope! =)

@212lohs
@212lohs 10 лет назад
I think you guys should have shot the E-M1 and GH4 at f/2.8 or f/3 since the dof is actually f/5.6 (2.8*2) or f/6(3*2) respectively, the a6000 and XT-1 at f/4 which would be f/6 (4*1.5), and the D4s at f/5.6 or f/6, it would have been a more accurate shootout.

That means you have to rise ISO x4 to get the same shutter
@paristo
@paristo 10 лет назад
Rambalac . You need to raise ISO 2 stops in 35mm format to compete with m4/3 or 1 stop to compete with APS-C format (1.5x crop factor) to maintain same shutter speed. So if you need high shutter speed (lets say "acceptable") and deeper depth of field (you rarely can shoot full open aperture when handling 35mm format camera) so you can have multiple subjects or whole subject sharp in different distance, then you are easily lose the 1-2 stops better ISO quality. Add to that combination of amazing Olympus 5-axis in body image stabilization and you get 4-5 stop benefit in low light or macro. And if you have money so you can buy f/0.95-f.8 lenses, you can even do full-size portraits with almost identical results as 35mm format camera with f/1.4-1.8 because the depth of field difference just two stops and if wanted, rest can be done in post process too in many cases. 1-2 stops in ISO quality might sound huge difference but it really isn't when placing side by side a large prints (60x60cm) and observed both from close range (like 10-15cm).

@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 10 лет назад
Hey Chris, Thanks for this review. Some may have already pointed this out, but since the Fuji is using a consumer level lens, while the others are using pro-enthusiast level lenses, it's not really a fair comparison for the Fuji. Fuji will be coming out with a f/2.8 lens with the 70-200mm equiv range soon, and then you will probably see a significant improvement in AF speed. Remember, the amount of light allowed in (when focusing, the lens only stops down the aperture at the moment of exposure, not as it's pre-focusing prior to exposure) and the speed of the motor that's built into the lens makes a huge difference on AF speed and accuracy. Thanks again for your review.

Nice...but I hope someday you can test the Sony A9 with the exact same location and bring in all the party the 1Dx, D5s, A9, A6500, GH5, Fujis, Olympus. You won't say anything about the blackout anymore with the A9 like what you mentioned in this video.

It would have been better if you had included Nikon D7200 or Canon 7D in the test, instead of D4s. Both these DSLRs are in similar price bracket of mirrorless cameras and comparison between these would have made more sense.
@212lohs
@212lohs 10 лет назад
No, it wouldn't have made sense since they're goal isn't to compare MILCs to similarly priced DSLRs. The point they're trying to make is "How do these MILCs stack up against each other since they all say they have the fastest AF and how they stack up against the fastest AF camera, the Nikon D4s?" Another question they wanted to answer was "If they can match the D4s in AF speed and tracking, are cameras like the D4s really relevant when cameras priced well-below the D4s are available?" These cameras for sure smoke the D7200 and the 7D for AF and burst, it's an absolute no-brainer.
@antoniovinci4266
@antoniovinci4266 10 лет назад
Even Panasonic complains because reviewers don't compare DSLR to "Mirrorless" enough, segregating the two worlds in the buyer's perception. It started to market the GH4 as "DSLR" in some places.
@yogeshsarkartravel
@yogeshsarkartravel 10 лет назад
I seriously doubt that. In another RU-vid video, I saw Olympus etc. Struggle indoor, when even D5300 does better. Plus comparisons are best done in same price bracket.
@212lohs
@212lohs 10 лет назад
That is not true. Did you not pay attention in the video? The Sony a6000 which costs much less than the Fuji XT-1 is better at AF tracking and has more MP. Comparisons shouldn't be limited to the same price range, it should include things that are similarly specced or better. I advise you to actually try these cameras out for yourself before just saying "D5300 is better b/c... Oh, b/c... I... watched a RU-vid video..."

hey TheCameraStoreTV great video! One thing I thought I'd point out for viewers is a little quirk from my own testing of the GH4 vs the other cameras in the video--the GH4 has a DSLR-like blackout if you set it to medium speed, which delivers the same exact speed as high during C-AF. Im not sure about the E-M1, as I dont have it on hand, but the GH4 is the only mirrorless camera here that can give you live view while shooting at that speed (the others just show the last frame). It makes it a lot more suitable for following panning motions than other mirrorless cameras because of this, and the experience approximates a DSLR much more closely.

Hi Chris, very good and interesting video, I just have one question about the E-M1 since your findings are kind of the opposite of many other reviews and my own experience: the E-M1 is rather strong in single focus speed and not that great in tracking. So I would like to know your opinion how much the lens played a role here: Do you think the Olympus "pro" lens (12-40 f2.8) or the 45mm f1.8 would have performed better on the E-M1 than the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8? Many thanks!

Great video, as always. I'm kind of curious about the autofocusing systems for video of these mirrorless cameras, especially the GH4. Many of them have phase detection or other very advanced systems, are any of them competent for autofocus during video, yet? Or are we going to be stuck with manually focusing for yet ANOTHER generation? I've seen video AF tests on the Sony A7/A7R and they're pretty impressive. Are any of the mirrorless close to the Canon 70D in terms of video autofocusing prowess? Thanks guys and keep up the great work. :)

Very nice review as always. Remember that DOF is thinner at F4 on the nikon, then fuji/sony and last the MFT cameras where everything seems in focus. Its easy to have mft fast focus when the cameras and lens elements doesnt have to work for it. I also think that many of the cameras were sharp at close range but lacked in the initial shots. The nikon is more expensive and a lot better, but think if shooting sports is your profession then you cannot afford losing your job because only half of the frames were good.

I am looking for a smaller camera than a big DSLR, so I think this was an interesting video. Thanks! I agree, that in order to have an interesting picture of fast action, it mostly have to be in focus. But other factors still come to play - at least for me. The color tone, richness of color and DOF. You can do a lot in post processing, but I like to do most in the shot at save time. The Fuji pictures draw my attention. I do a lot of action shots so, for now, I will stick with my "Big gun" ;-)

Hi, Great review! Im going to purchase the a6000 camera but i have a few questions. does the fast tracking autofocus works only on faces? what about objects? which adapter you recommend for my 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Sigma taking in consideration the fast focus is very important to me.
@GeirErtzgaard
@GeirErtzgaard 10 лет назад
I have just one little issue with this, and I don't know how important it is. The Em1 was the only one not using a zuiko lens. I know that there are focusing differences between pana and zuiko lenses, and wonder what the result would be if one used a prime lens or one of the higher quality zuiko zooms.
@mavfan1
@mavfan1 10 лет назад
since the X-T1 can utilize UHS-II SD cards it'd be interesting to see if using one would resolve the buffer issue. I personally have no need for super fast shooting so it's not an issue for me but if it was I'd like to know if the UHS-II cards are worth the price. What I've heard so far indicates they aren't but I haven't seen that much data yet.
