Yeah and funny thing about Reaper is that in his good reviews his videos are short because he avoids spoilers (since he wants you to watch it) but on shit he think sucks he'd make it as long as possible lol.
About damn time people start noticing this damn movie. One of the best movies I've seen in years. Alexander Payne's other movies are equally as compelling.
@@zeroThreeSixHD Because the movie didn't crack $50 million at the box office worldwide? It being an Oscar nom has little to do with a lot of people seeing it, especially considering it didn't win, and especially these days.
Imo, he’s like Clint Eastwood for example. Simply put, he’s just there to act and knows at the end of the day that it’s a job. Doesn’t mean one can have passion and skill for such though, and he shows it.
Reaper ... fucking thank you for doing all these great reviews. I told my wife last time "we only watch movies suggested by reaper in future". You re doing a really good job ... keep on exactly like that. Just want to adress that.
Funny how we watch a B-list celebrity's movies without hesitation, while we wait for the green light from our critics before seeing Hollywood blockbusters.
Somehow I didn’t notice that symbolism until now but I love it! Mary’s actress was very well cast and she perfectly delivered the pain of a woman who lost her only child.
Bravo, David. More genre-redefining, trope-subverting, atmospheric, dark and eerie, emotionally draining, gut wrenching, aesthetically heavy craft by post-horror auteur with an arthouse edge, dread-inducing, suspenseful build up with strong character development and gradual feeling of escalation, bone-chilling slow burn with “say more with less” approach and soul-shaking, blood-curdling, skin-crawling and nerve-wracking exercise in persistently looming dread where tension and anxiety permeates every frame as movie reaches its nail-biting, jaw-clenching and paranoia-inducing final climax, free of any cheap gore or cartoonish CGI drama film, truly elevated kinography.
Wow! An ACTUAL good movie that doesn’t berate, pander, annoy, enrage and/or lecture people about what they should or shouldn’t like or hate for the sake of pushing anti-escapism and instead does what a REAL movie should do and entertains its audience with good writing, good pacing, good story, good directing, good music and good characters? Consider me perplexed!
Today's Hollywood always tries to come across as relatable with quirky humor and underhanded social commentary but it forgets when it means to be relatable. Shared experiences, similar problems and similar regrets.
Aside from Downsizing, Alexander Payne's filmography is consistently excellent. This movie, "Election," and "The Descendants" are my personal favorites.
Yeah exactly this. I don’t know what the hell Downsizing was, but everything else Payne has done has been either quite good or superb. (I wasn’t a huge fan of Nebraska, but it was an interesting film nonetheless.).
I was really worried Giamatti's roles were over when I saw him doing commercials for some phone service. The man is way too talented and unique to be wasted on ads. I'm glad he's still getting excellent roles in excellent movies.
Whilst first watching “The Holdovers” I was very aware that I was falling more and more in love with it, which is the type of unique experience you can only get from an instant classic. I’ll always be grateful for this film because, given the ideological, lazy drivel that passes for contemporary filmmaking and storytelling, it reminded what a wonderful and life-enhancing medium film can be. Thank you Reaper for both your thoughtful review and drawing attention to an exceptional example of cinema.
My favourite from last year. I found it strange having my emotions stirred and realized it had been such a long time since a Hollywood movie has achieved this.
Thanks for the recommendation! I wouldn't have checked this out otherwise but I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are still people left who care about good story telling, good acting, and making good movies. This film IS excellent.
The fact the Academy even considered Barbie is some dogshit in a saucepan. So its no wonder they didnt consider this gem because it is clearly the odd one out in Hollywood.
Your review brings tears of joy to my eyes. I cannot believe something decent actually made it past the PC police to the theaters. I'd love to see this. Thanks Reaper!
Gotta say Reaper, even though your videos where you recommend some movie or series usually get punished by the algorithm and also get less attention by the subs, I do appreciate them a lot. Thanks
Great video (and great movie). I saw this with my son and couldn't wait when we got out of the theater to tell him about Dead Poets Society. We enjoyed Holdovers so much, but I kept thinking of DPS as well, so it was a good opportunity to tell him about it. We plan to watch it this month.
My wife and I were invested the moment the trailer dropped. How it looks and feels like an 70s film completely throughout. It's simple, there's no movie character arcs, they're real people who bond part are still the characters they started as. And let's face it, like you said, Paul Giamatti, the man is sarcasm incarnate. And that lazy eye!
Thank you for this! Watched it exclusively on your recommendation and it was everything you said it’d be. Love your channel Reaper! Your breakdown of everything wrong with season 4 of True Detective on Open Bar is still my absolute FAVORITE … love the animated off-the-cuff version of you, would love to hear more like that!!!
Completely agree - it was easily the best American movie last year. Payne is going to find himself alone, the last of dead breed, as a writer-director who still cares to make rich human movies, by humans, for humans. I was worried for a minute that Payne might have caught the woke bug, but he just flat ignores it. The Holdovers is a movie from another time (as Payne cleverly emphasizes).
Thanks Reaper! Always brightens my day when i see a new video by you pop up ♥ Fantastic movie! Although i still wonder how it was created cause it is not reflecting "the world we live in today" ... Seems that they didn´t give a damn about "modern audiences" 😄 (to phrase it like drinker would say i imagine ^^)
So nice to see a positive review. Most reviewers tend to take pride in only reviewing the bad, I'm looking at you Disparu, that its refreshing to see someone take the time to actually give us something we can watch rather than avoid
I'm still watching Hazbin Hotel to have an opinion but damm...this movie review/synopsis is really cool... Feels like random anecdotes i had when i was in school...at least the good ones xd
We're waiting from you a review on the Fallout series as soon as I saw in the first episode a pregnant woman with a fork in her eye trying to shoot the bad guys like Rambo, I said to myself that's cat shit
