The Last of Us Part 1 is the Most Unnecessary Remake Ever 

Joel looks great in the remake but does anyone else feel he looks less mean and more like a dad something about his original design makes him look much more ruthless

I wouldn’t even have a problem with this remake but the fact that they’re pricing it at 70$ is insane

The PS3 version isn't even (that) dated, let alone the PS4 remaster, so this was completely unnecessary.

One reason is probably to make Part 1 and Part 2 more similar, both graphically and in terms of gameplay. If you play both games one after the other, you have more of a feeling of playing one game. It has more continuity. I think the fact that they called the second game "The Last of Us - Part 2" instead of just "The Last of Us 2" indicates to me that they probably planned early on to do this remake.

The original part one Ellie actually looked like a 13 year old girl but the new part 1 looks like she is 15 or 16. its not that bad but the original design of Ellie has a special place in my heart.

As much as I want a jak and daxter remake I wanted a Sly Cooper remake honestly that franchise really deserves a lot of attention and it had a HUGE cliffhanger! Also yes I'm excited to play it since I haven't played it before!

My personal theory on why this is coming out is that they are calling it a remake instead a remaster because they’re going to add Abby. I feel they’re going to try and add some Abby segments to better tie it in with “part 2”. A huge complaint about 2 was that everyone hates Abby and her friends so they’ll try and amend that by adding them into “part 1”. I hope this doesn’t happen but that’s just what I think will.

Another reason for the TLOU1 Remake is so that Naughty Doofus can gain more unnecessary Game Awards... because it worked out so well for the second game and no one called the show crap because of it! Not even Spawn Wave...

As a big PlayStation fan I even find the idea of the last of us remake to be pointless Sony could have pick another game that deserves a remake like Legend of dragoon.

Personally I prefer the art style of the remaster compared to this new one. Its probably just me, but I can tell immediately which is which, mostly because the new one looks way too smooth. The clothes look smooth, like theres no texture on there at all (2:28). The original had these textures and subtle griminess to it, along with this really nice lighting affect on the characters in cutscenes, which you can see in 5:51. Giving it a really interesting look and feel. They seem to also take out some interesting camera angles (again 5:51 5:31 for examples) Though they did improve on the 5:41 shot, that looks gorgeous. Hopefully the gameplay is really fun compared to the original, but I don't think its worth its price tag for a remake

I mean, I do much prefer the graphics and gameplay of the second game and thought it’d be cool to see the first in the same kind of style, so in that regard I’m quite happy. On the other hand, however, the first game plays fine and looks fine so a remake _this_ soon is kinda weird. Like, if it was 10 or so years in the future then it’d be fine to remake it, but a game that isn’t even that old getting a remaster and remake after less than a decade just ends up feeling like a cash grab

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I even had a discussion with a GameStop employee months ago when this was first reported and he felt the same way.

The main problem I have is that the remake being beat-for-beat the original with next to nothing changing, is that that's simultaneously the best part and the worst part of the whole release. A PS5 can already run The Last of Us Remastered, but like you said, people would buy it anyway. In this economy, the households/people who don't already afford a PS5 can just buy the first two games to play on PS4. This studio at Sony could've just as easily done an Uncharted reboot, or remaster, instead. Drake's Fortune came out 2007 IIRC.

At least I’ll give credit to the Dead Space remake devs for actually being very open about the development of the game and actually listening to feedback. It still makes no sense why they’re remaking it so soon, but open communication is shockingly rare in this industry.

They killed the franchise with TLoU 2 so what other choice do they have? Remake / release the one everyone loves. + I really think that they are expecting huge sales after the HBO show is released so cash-grab from all fronts. Just recently played TLoU on PS5 and it was fantastic, you can get that version for 8$ new but why would you when you can get it this year with 'better' graphics for 69.99$?

Neil Drunkman (I know that's not how you spell his last name), has once again failed us. He doesn't care about the fanbase, but rather, our money. He was destined to fail the moment TLOU 2 released.

If the level design gets an update for bigger maps similar to part 2 I'll be happy. But if it follows the OG step by step I can see the argument of it being a bit silly. I played the OG after part 2 and yeah its dated in terms of combat and level design/level flow ect.. But I would love to see that combat updated to match part 2.. part 2 is crazy satisfying with its combat.

I'm usually pretty relaxed about remakes/remasters in general, because it's a chance for new audiences to play these games. But why a game that the PS5 already runs? I don't see this even selling very well.

My initial thought of this announcement was "I bet you 10 bucks they would change that random surgeon to clearly show that its Abby's dad. Lets retcon the original to fit the continuity problems of Part 2." Also, game remake costing 70USD is a crime.

They turned Joel into a man in his late 50s maybe even early 60s for some reason and slimmed down his character model to make him appear less heroic, ohhhh the agenda Coupled with the recent industry trend of lazy remakes that dont really change or expand the game - we get updated graphics and gameplay mechanics - sure, but will that be enough to be more than just a remaster of a remaster?

Creatively bankrupt is a great way of putting it ! 👍 It's been heading that way for a few years now ... It proves that visuals and visuals alone are the main priority of AAA gaming everything else takes a back seat .... If you've been playing games for 20year plus then the indie scene is your only hope for innovation

But then Sony and others came in…and said wait we can’t just put this only on PC. So here we are now, I agree remakes should be reserved for games that really need it. Like Sly Cooper or MGS 1 things like that.

They should’ve chosen Bloodborne, it would look beautiful especially with the original art direction and style. It even got the 30 fps cap originally, and there are just some areas that need a lot of touching up on (Like Beast Paarl’s arena) That would be my true dream remake, especially if it got the Demon Souls treatment because Fromsoft games aren’t graphically advanced in the first place while Naughty Dog always makes their games look beautiful

They just want more money, without having to hire actors or create a compelling story. This is so dumb, and I'm a HUGE fan of this game. Played the remaster half a dozen times after playing the original.

I would consider buying it if they do a redesign for factions (multiplayer) and add a few maps, but I don't see them doing that. Since they're redoing things from the ground up they might take factions out to save time and money.

I would love to see an actual remake of RE1 before they move on to RE4. Recycling the GameCube release from the early 2000's was nice but not at all the same thing. Games from that generation would benefit a whole lot more from a remake than The Last Of Us will.

I don’t think it’s unnecessary. The visuals in TLOU2 were jaw dropping and all I could think about while playing that game was how good it would be to play the original with those graphics and gameplay upgrades. I’m pretty hyped to experience TLOU1 again.

The original holds up extremely well graphically. Well it’s what you’d expect when that’s where they dumped all their assets into, as opposed to making compelling and deep gameplay.

This is just the fastest, cheapest way to up the sales of part 2 (which sales profit is not meeting their long term expectations AT ALL). this isn't about us, about games, it's about sales, revitalizing the damaged ip, make people "fall in love" with the game again, sell you the game a second time for full price and ultimately up the sales of TLOU part II as the main reason for this whole mess.

I'd be interested in seeing the mixed encounters between infected and human adversaries introduced into the original, as that innovation didn't appear until the Left Behind DLC. That, to me, was the most obvious limitation of the engine when I played the original in 2013. The partitions between human and infected skirmishes felt a bit strained and inorganic. I'd have liked to see some infected roused during the sniper skirmish. Perhaps there are some held captive for medical research in the final hospital sequence that Joel could release.

The original graphics had a charm to them that is completely lost in the remake. It's hard to describe but it's the way they look in the face. Almost like the smallest little hint of a cartoonish art direction. I love it in the original game and to me, Joel and Ellie don't even look like the same people in the remake.

This would have made more sense to make this next generation. Another 8 or so years and the Last of Us part 1 would actually be considered an old game at that point. And there would be enough of a visual upgrade that it might be worth investing the time to rebuild this game from the ground up. But as you said, its way too early and the remastered game still looks great by today's standards. In many ways I actually prefer the visuals from the remastered game on the PS4 which is a clear sign that this didn't need to happen so soon.

You''re comparing the orginals pre-rendered cutscences to the remakes real-time ones. The gameplay shots show significant imporvement. Also, this isn't just a visuals upgarde, it's a gameplay one aswell.

To Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is basically like GTA V is to Rockstar Games. How GTA V is released three different times on three different console generations! (Started with Xbox 360 and PS3, then the remastered for Xbox One and PS4, and now again GTA V released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S).

Technology is coming along and getting really powerful maybe thats a good way to practice for higher quality games in the future

The Last of Us Part 1 is a game that has realistic graphic yet a people are more exited about Shredder's Revenge which tells you something. Seriously Sony's current management is making some questionable decisions. To add insult to charge 70 dollars are they effing insane.

I’ve played “The Last Of Us” not my favorite game because the controls are taken away from you constantly. I understand the whole concept of the story,but a lot of times I want to play games like RE2MAKE and DMC5. Those games have stories,but the story takes a backseat so the gameplay can shine. I’ll tell you I played through TLOU twice and I have no desire to replay it. However I will agree this is an unnecessary remake.

The remake I was excited for but then I realized it's basically just remastering the remaster but this time ruining Joel more and putting more spotlight on Ellie which I think most people can agree is annoying af. Something that does need a remake for sure is inFamous 1 & 2 they're both over a decade old and could have so much potential for new content in it.

The comparisons made between the pre rendered cutscenes and the remake aren’t too crazy different. It’s a bit of a weird way to show off the game. The part of in game footage there is a huge difference. But it’s still pretty pointless. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say the last of us is unplayable from its graphics or performance. The remake will have all cutscenes in real time, so I guess the clothing you out of the character will be shown in the cutscenes now, and the gameplay will look as good as the cutscenes. My biggest issue is the price tag, I mean $70!? Come on, I know it took a lot of effort but, it’s not like they had to get actors or write a script, set design, big parts of developing a new game.

A bit off topic, but everyone needs to check out Evil West. It's the game I am looking forward to most and is a brand new IP.

2 games in under 10 years and were getting a last of us remake

I really feel like the biggest argument for The Last of Us Part 1 existing is the amount of accessibility options it will add (assuming it takes those from part 2), giving a whole plethora of new people the ability to (comfortably) play the game where they otherwise could not.

Eh, I agree that this isn't really necessary when anyone with a PS5 has a perfectly decent and playable remaster for free anyway, but I completely disagree. Maybe it's just me, but I can definitely see the difference and the remake is definitely better on a technical, graphical level. From the sound of things, they're not just going to do a carbon copy of the original. They're going to insert the improved enemy AI and at least some of the gameplay changes from part 2, which could suggest that they could be expanding on the environments from the original game to make them less linear. That could actually be cool and worthwhile. I'm honestly not hating on this. While I don't think it's necessary, if it's good, it's good. I'm sure I'll probably pick it up when the price drops (since I haven't and have thus far refused to pick up a single PS5 game for $70). If memory is correct, it seems like this game only exists because they were making TLOU: Factions multiplayer game, so they decided to do a remake of the original since they already had the assets and the extra time and manpower. I'm not gonna bitch and moan, even if it is a bit unnecessary, but they better have made some noteworthy changes if they want me to even consider paying full price for it. Also, hot take, I'm sure, but part 2 doesn't suck. The story isn't as iconic as the original, but I'm kind of in the middle. I think the game is incredibly well made, and I think the story would've been better if it was structured a little differently, but I get and respect why people both love it and don't enjoy it all the same. It definitely deserves some criticisms, especially the studio's response to criticism, but I also think some of the criticism that was made was also ignorant and kinda dumb. I personally chalk a lot of the negative reception up to wrong place, wrong time. Not many people would want to play a really dark and kinda depressing story during a time when psycho rioters were burning their cities down after months of stupid af economic lockdowns. My one outright concern about this remake is that I hope they don't insert Abby into it somewhere. I'd probably be fine with a blink-and-you-miss cameo, but nothing more. I actually didn't hate her character, but she is entirely unnecessary to the original story, and the whole surprise of finding out she was the kid of a Firefly Joel murdered only works because we didn't know she was there prior to that revelation. It would just be unnecessary. I'd much rather get more time with Bill, Tommy and those guys they meet in Pittsburgh, assuming they're expanding on the story at all, that is.

They completely changed the combat system. And they added the new and better A.I., totally new models for literally everything in the game, better ambiance, intractable environments and obviously extremely better graphics that set the mood better. Seriously man, I wish people would actually watch more than these hate videos and see how much work was put into this game. More people are going to finally play this amazing game and I couldn't be happier.

Yep I was one of the ones who brought it I like Resident Evil 5 the AI kind of sucks but it was manageable playing with friends and family that was the best way to play Resident Evil 5

the resident evil remake came out only six years after resident evil to be fair. nobody complained then. my issue isnt that its being remade; its that its shot for shot looking like the exact same experience with modern visuals.

In the comparison close up shot of Ellie in front of the couch, I prefer her face in the PS4 version. Her face looks like a different person on PS5, it's really off-putting to me.

I think people who say that the remake and the OG looks the same, needs to get their eyes checked. And the people who think that this was a night and day difference, you too need to get your eyes check. This remake makes the line between remake and remaster a lot more blurry. Look at every other remake that has been made and look at their drastic difference. RE 2, RE 3 and FF7 remake. That visual jump is insane. They not only give the cutscenes and environments better textures, but completely remade all of them. With this remake, you can see how much stuff they are reusing again. So it makes sense why people think this is just a remaster 2.0, because it really is. Now let's talk about the gameplay. I think it's a no brainer that they will use the exact same gameplay from part 2 and that's fine. But let's not pretend that the jump in the core gameplay from TLOU 1 to TLOU 2 was gigantic. It was not. The level design is bigger and better, the AI is smarter, the guns feel better, the movements feel better and you can now dodge and also jump. These are all great improvements but it is still the exact same core gameplay system from a game that a lot of people find "outdated". The game can still feel very linear, the puzzles are better than the first game but it doesn't mean the puzzles are good, and I'm guessing there will still be a lot of looting segments. I also don't think adding a dodge button for a big guy like Joel would make sense. Maybe a counter button or a block button would be better. So yeah, I think this remake will probably still make TLOU 1 a great or maybe a better game than the OG. But the truth is, this remake lowers the bar for remakes. And I would probably have no problems in buying it, if it isn't $70. They literally just switch engines, design new levels, and copy paste the mechanics they have worked on in TLOU 2. That is not something you sell for $70. That is almost a robbery. But hey, TLOU fans on Twitter are absolute fanatics and will buy anything ND throws at them, so I still hope they're happy. I'm just 1 dude

Gaming is just not going in a good direction. Microtransactions, NFTs, remakes (read: cashgrabs) of games which won't need a remake for another 20 years... Yea, it's not fun.

Im excited for new gameplay changes but except that I only care because of the PC version. Other than that I completely agree with you about the lack of reasons to make this. But on the other hand I can definetly see the differences between the remake and remaster and while I again agree that it still doesn't apologize its remake, I will certainly appreciete the new graphics as I think that while not most of them but few of the scenes especially in the begining start to feel a bit outdated.

This feels like a money grab. I could see if the game was lengthened along with added or changed cutscenes while keeping the overall theme and story along with updated game play but this doesn't feel worth it yet. Lastly for Capcom to skip a remake for a main entry title in resident evil is a tragedy to me.
