The Last of Us Part 1 Remake Looks Embarrassing... 

That bit about “being built from the ground up” and also conversely “not being able to add prone because the game wasn’t built for it” summed up my feelings exactly. They’ve basically admitted it’s nothing but a graphical update.

The problem with this remake is that it's actually a remaster disguised and priced as a remake. A remaster is meant to make visual and performance upgrades to a game to make it better while a remake is meant to be the best and worst features of a game, pick them apart and turn it into a new but better experience.

At this point I expect Sony to have TLoU remade for the PS6. This is just ridiculous. Now, there's a PS3, PS4, and PS5 version.

When they finally, officially announced this game, I was SO excited. I loved the gameplay of part 2 and was pumped to have it implemented into part 1. I can’t tell you how excited I was to have at least a dodge mechanic in part 1. It would make a lot of the more stiff enemy encounters a lot more engaging. The fact that they advertised it as having “modern gameplay” and being “rebuilt from the ground up” and then excluding mechanics from part 2 is crushing. I feel if this gameplay hadn’t leaked, a lot of people like myself would’ve gone through with purchasing the game, only to be majorly disappointed

Unfortunately Sony will never let you buy a PS3 game from them again. They will continue too remake PS3 games to sell them on PS5 for $70. That's what this is really about. Gotta think about it business wise. PS4 games are the only games you will ever be able to upgrade for $10. Anything PS3 re-released will always be $70. This is the future of PS3 gameing. How ironic tho that if you own the PS4 version of this game, you can't upgrade it, that's because their justifying it as a PS3 remake exclusively.

Don't get me wrong, tlou is one of my favourite games ever, the story is amazing and everything is amazing, but it was an amazing game before..I don't think we need another and another remastered version, like is there gonna be another version for ps6? For me Resident Evil 2 Remake is the best remake to this date, and it's an instant classic on its own, just like the original. The abundant improvements that Capcom commited are insane, and on that front, TLOU Remake will pale starkly.

You are spot on. They cannot resell another remaster of this game, the only way they can milk your wallet is by remaking it to try and justify the purchase. This doesn't look built form the ground up for the PS5. It looks like they took TLOU Remaster and added a graphic mode to it.

Again this is basically a cash grab! Sure Neil its certainly not a "cashgrab". I actually wanted Days Gone 2 because I enjoyed the first game I'm still pissed at Sony for cancelling it for a cash grab of a remake all because Neil Druckmann is milking the Last of Us.

Thr problem is the animations are still from the ps3 generation. It looked brilliant 10 years ago, not so on the ps5. Tlou2 animations are miles better. Also noone seems to be talking about the model changes from Joel and Ellie, they looked better in the original (fidelity aside)

Just figured it out. They realize we are coming to a graphics plateau. By next gen games will be as pretty as the are gonna get so they are milking the pretty value as much as they can because soon graphics upgrades will be meaningless

When they first announced it, I was kinda happy cuz I really liked the original. I figured ok, $30-40 rerelease or something I’ll get to enjoy the game again with a new coat of paint, but $70? Y’all can fuck right off with your $70 I’m waiting for a price drop to $15 now, not in a rush at all. Regardless, they coulda spent those resources on something better, like making a Last of us 3 that kills off Abby redeeming the series story wise 😅

Like myself, Other than the points a lot of people make like "why is this being made lmao" or "why'd you choose this over Days Gone 2?" One thing that had me sort of liking the idea of this remake is some cool new level design, and as Sony stated when the remake was announced. The remake would incorporate the bells/whitles and gameplay enhancements of tlou2. Like yeah the back of my mind is still telling me that this is a cash grab and that this was chosen to be made becuase it wouldn't be as risky as making a Days Gone sequel and that tlou brand is a critics fantasy land. Despite all that I was still pumped...THAT WAS UNTIL THE LEAKS DROPPED. Swear to god I had thought that I was inside of some lucid dream like "noooooo, really? Noooo...can't be real...right? I mean C'mon. Right" The fact that Naughty Dog had learned nothing from the false advertising backlash of tlou2 has me smacking my head. Not only did they false advertise their pointless remake, IT IS ARGUABLY WORSE THIS TIME AROUND! Fuck you mean built from the ground up? I see the same melee mocap animations I've already seen 5 years prior. This is same ass gameplay I saw 5 years prior. Speaking of gameplay, they barely tapped on the topic of that. "OH but the graphics" fuck the graphics. Graphics is almost all that a triple AAA studio really cares about. Damn man Naughty Dog used to be one of the GOAT's in the 2000's and 2010's. 8:38 I wonder if they changed this map in this part? In the TLOU there is no path that narrow when Ellie tries to ride away with Callus. Till now I havnt seen many places where the layout of the maps got changed. I think to they should put everything into the game they couldnt do in 2013 and include great stuff from Part2: the dodge mechanic, smart AI with good RNG, dogs for the hunters, expand those short map sections ( especially in winter), etc.. They already have great graphics, a great story, dialogs ans soundtrack. Shouldnt be that hard to go the extra mile...

Imagine spending $70 on this and then have wasted $60 on Part II. That's $130 with nothing adding to the original game's prestige.

The dodge mechanic was the main thing for me, playing TLOU2 with slow mo dodging like a beast was so good I replayed the game pretty much melee only just to feel like I'm unstoppable I was on board with this and alot of things let me down so me no buy it now, TLOU2 gameplay wise is just too sick and to play the better story with the mechanics of number 2 would've just been unreal for me

After how controversial TLOU2 was, and how unnecessary this remake is in the first place, I can’t say I’m surprised about this outcome at all. But of course, we all know this is gonna sell incredibly well, so we better expect more of this nonsense in the future…

6:27 Death Stranding did this, I bought the original on PC a bit ago and loved it. Then they announced Directors Cut for PC which was the PS5 version ported to PC with the new content and haptic feedback on the controllers, and guess how much that was to upgrade? 10 DOLLARS because I already owned the base game. 10. Dollars. That is fair, and especially for TLOU1 which has now been released on 3 consoles including this one.

People who defend this game probably have not (consciously) played a good remake to understand the criticism. The last good remake I played was Xenoblade Chronicles definitive Edition, it is only 10+ years old but the jump from Wii to Switch is significant.

I’ll say it again…Naughty Dog really needs to make a prequel game of Joel’s 20 year blank period, call it something like “The Last of Us: 20 years”. Him becoming more cold hearted & merciless as he survives on, him meeting Tess and exploring his relationship with her, the Firefly emergence, his fallout with Tommy. Who wouldn’t buy that game! Use all that dough Naughty Dog earned in their entire career success (especially from the Last of Us franchise) to make something new that still exists within the Last of Us canon because fans will drink that juice right up 👌 I would!!! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Raw gameplay is very disappointing! There's nothing new to people who played the game already! If you wanna get it for the graphics you can get it on sale for U$30/25. That game is not worth U$70.

I haven’t played the series but have been curious ever since it’s release. $70 is way too high. I’ll pick up the PS4 version, but the game has to be something special for me to drop $70. And for me, really the only games deserving of that are Fromsoft titles now.

Part 1 is most definitely in my top 10 favorite video games of all time….but the only way I would have paid full price for a remaster 1.02 (which is what it is) the campaign would have needed 2 or 3 new chapters, new outfits that actually show up in cutscenes, new areas in base game chapters & fights where you could pit infected & humans against each other like in Left Behind & Part 2! The fact that this is just a better remaster reduces full price to around $29.99 for me which is the most I’ll be paying if I decide to buy it! PS. I totally disagree with you on Bloodborne though (another one of my all time favorite games) I would love to see even a good remaster for that game but everything you said about TLOU2 & the upcoming TLOU “remake” I totally agree with!!!

I truly feel this release was only greenlit to capitalize on the upcoming The Last of Us TV series. This game feels almost as cynical as Part 2 felt towards the fan base. I don’t know if it started with Amy Henning’s departure from the studio or what but Naughty Dog just can’t seem to make very many good decisions with their games anymore.

These people don't understand what Remake means, the last good Remake I played was Mafia Definitive Edition. The Last of Us Remake looks like PC texture mod on top of PS4 version. 70$ for this is insanity, buy the PS4 for 10$ or less used or wait for the PC release and try it the Captain Jack Sparrow way.

What exactly is the value for the consumer, especially compared to the alternatives? Was there even a demand for this? It doesn't help that to me, there's not much of a jump between PS3/PS4 original to PS5. Like there's diminishing returns. Compare this to Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition which is a Remake of the Wii game. A lot of people wanted to play the first game because of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (And Super Smash Bros Ultimate). Unfortunately the Wii Disc was out of print and now expensive, required the Wii U to play the digital rerelease, or the New Nintendo 3DS. Not exactly ideal. There's a clear quality of life to the remake. The remake also had value outside of consumer demand. The characters got entirely new models. There was a new campaign/epilogue "Future Connected" which revolved around the previously unused Bionis Shoulder map and topped off Melia's character arc while teasing Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Sidequesting and navigating the world was easier. The menus were revamped. There way to temporarily level your characters down so you won't be overleveled. Casual Mode was added for those introduced via Smash Bros.

Also I've noticed they've given the characters like ellie a more mature age gap in the remake.shes suppose to look young in Part 1.its like they took part 2 version of her and stuck her in the remake.but overall it's still has the same storyline as ps3 and ps4 did.so I won't be wasting much time and money on the game!maybe the developers should focus more on a Part 3 sequel in my opinion.

One of the biggest issues with this REMILK aka a remaster of a remaster is that a lot of the characters look a lot older than then they should I mean ellie doesn't even look like a 14 year old she looks like she's 17 years old not 14 and jole looks 55 instead of 48 also if this really is a remake built from the ground up why couldn't they add prone or dogging enemie attacks or add the jump button etc and it's like this guy said it doesn't matter if the game wasn't built for it because there supposed to be rebuilding and remaking the game from the ground up so they could build the game to support those functions and features also this should be a Playstation exclusive just like the original game was but now there also porting it to pc for extra money so this is definitely just a cash grab

I stand by the belief that Jim Ryan is just as greedy running Sony as Furukawa and Bowser are running Nintendo. Phil Spencer is the only man that can run a game company right, fans first, no bs remakes. Gotta say Xbox is winning right now out of every game company on the pro consumer side right now.

I have an extremely hot take here. I just got done playing the PS4 remaster, and it's getting kinda old. I just did two playthroughs, and one on grounded. I got the platinum. After seeing the gameplay of the PS5 version, I'm actually surprised, I didn't think it was going to be a change, but it is. It's actually using tlous 2 engine. I don't think it's worth $70, but I think it has a reason for existing. I am looking forward to playing it on my PS5 eventually. I loved going back and playing new game plus on the PS4 version, and I can't wait to get all the trophies again on the PS5 version. What I'm hoping for the most is new trophies, and not a copy and paste of trophies. I am hoping that we will finally get a speed run trophy. I'm not trying to defend anyone, I'm just giving my honest opinion.

They should have added an extra hidden story that was at least a couple of hours long, like they did with Left Behind. From what I see, they did a great job at the graphics for the cutscenes but much of the graphics for the gameplay looks the same. It actually looks like they just added filters to the existing gameplay, like you do on your phone after you take a picture. I expected this remake to go way beyond that. As a fan I would buy it, but at a discount. I won't pay full price for it!

In my opinion, I would play the original The Last of Us on PS3 since it came out years ago. A little later, I probably play the remastered version of The Last of Us on PS4 which it cost less that the PS5 remake. The remastered version is also playable on PS5 through backwards compatible. I think that Naughty Dog should remake Jak and Daxter with visual upgrade and make it run at 60 FPS.

After playing remastered this weekend it has aged like milk in some ways. Mechanically and story/acting wise is still a 10, but graphically it isn't very good. Things were popping up 20 feet in front of me, a lot of things just didn't look right and never looked right to me that throughout the environment. With that being said the fact they didn't have to hire actors back, didn't need a mo cap crew, didn't need writers, and I'm sure I'm missing other things they didn't need to pay for this should be $40. Comparison shots show how much work and effort went into remaking the world and making it look way better than what a ps3 can do but yeah $70 is hard to justify when they just had to build on a vision that already exists. This game probably took half as much to make as part 2 and therefore should be no more than $40.

Instead of remaking an 8 year old game that still holds up, they could have gone into their catalogue and remade the Jak and Daxter games, games that have geniunely dated but have so much charm and potential in them. Imagine that timeline, that's what makes me sad.

I try to hold a philosophy with Remakes. I have two rules in them. The remake cannot have a retail price higher than $40. The remake needs to be different enough from the original to justify it. Since TLOU Pt I is basically a carbon copy Remake that's asking for $70, I'm going to treat it like a brand new game with an Above Standard price tag. Well clearly it's a remake, so it's not a brand new game as this is a PS3 game at its core. There's not enough changes to excuse a New Game like experience, so it's not worth of full retail price. The game has a remaster and all 3 releases are very close together. And the fact it's asking for $10 extra in a time where $60 is still considered the Standard meaning it believes it's not just worth full price, but worth more than that. So my conclusion with this remake is this game should be $30 at most, but it's asking for $40 more because it believes it's worth that amount when it clearly isn't. The only way I could ever call this a worthy purchase is if you're going to get it on PC and/or you never played the game before. Because at least with the PC version, it's not only a new experience, but you could probably create your own fun with it if the game gets mods. But definitely wait for a sale as $70 shouldn't be a thing for a remake.

Actually ended up being completely remade with the part 2 engine, with an entire AI overhaul. Got it on sale for $50, and was totally worth it! Better than I'd thought it'd be! The AI of 2, but the story of 1, it's great!

Completely agree I have no idea what is wrong with developers these days. But I can’t wait to see your review on this. No doubt it would be the best way to play it but 70 bucks is a no. Honestly it should've been like the Legacy Of Thieves Collection, 49.99, which came with 2 great games, compared to Part I being just one. I honestly think the Part I remake should be around 39.99-49.99, and not 70, and also having an upgrade possible for owners of the PS4 version, similar to the Legacy Of Thieves Collection.

I was really hyped for this release and fully on board to get it but seeing that it doesn't have any of the gameplay changes is a deal-breaker for me. That was one of the main things I was looking forward to, to have it play like Part 2, having all those cool animations and just feeling even more immersed in the levels. Part 2 gameplay had that aggressiveness to it and it felt so real, the gore was amazing too. Definitely skipping this one.

Buy it used so they don't get your money, otherwise you're getting played like an idiot by a scam.

I didn't even know about the leak until I saw the official reveal. THATS'S what turned me away from getting this game. Sure, it looked prettier, but nothing they showed could justify $70 when I've seen several other games get free/ heavily discounted upgrades.

There's a bigger plot to all of this, there's a TV show, possibly a movie, and the remake of the remaster is just the icing on the cake to get more $$$ on PS5 and PC.

I actually was going to buy it. Loved TLOU 1, but never played 2 after I saw how carelessly they trashed the characters/story. I was looking forward to playing an amazing game with an amazing story with all of the "remade" gameplay that everyone liked from TLOU2. But now....Guess I'll just go buy the remastered and enjoy pretty graphics.

When Jason Schrier leaked this Part1 over a year ago it was clearly a waste of resources. And now we see that it’s a low effort cash grab requested by Jim Ryan himself. I predict PlayStation will be half gems and half gaas garbage in three years time which last almost a decade. There are people who want to experience the game on PS5. There’s people who want to see the game in 4K with raytracing. There’s people who want to experience the 3D audio, Adaptive triggers and controller haptics on a game other then Astros Playroom… You don’t have to buy it and you don’t need play it… so why whine about it? I used to buy the deluxe edition of Call of Duty yearly… I haven’t bought a new CoD in 2 years because I don’t like what they are doing with the game… it’s that easy… don’t buy it… I’ll never understand the mentality of “I don’t like it so I’m gonna publicly shit on it”. Is it just to ruin others enjoyment? Naughty Dog remastering it with a small team isn’t taking away from the other things they are working on… this remaster isn’t hurting you. Not to mention all the people who never got to play the original game. I have a few friends who played Xbox since the 360 and switched to PlayStation with the PS5… they now get to experience this game in a much more beautiful and immersive experience. When a game is made or remastered it isn’t just for one person. It’s for a community of people… I played the original last of us on a tiny LCD tv that wasn’t even 1080p. When I bought the PS4 version it was 50% off and I played it on a 1080p (not HD) tv… I now have a PS5 and a 43 inch 4K tv… I’m excited to not only see the graphics but to actually play the game the way it was intended to look… the way it looked in my mind when I remember the gameplay… I understand it might not be for you but there’s no need to make people feel stupid for wanting to buy/play it… don’t ruin the fun for people.

If one has already played the original Last of Us, or the remastered PS4 version, There is absolutely no need for any of those people to get this game from the sounds of it.

The day it released on ps3, that was the day my favorite game of all time was born. Ps4 version came completely with online and the dlc and had that nice 60 fps upgrade anddddd the price was only 40 bucks, a lotttt good reasons for me to get it. Now this ps5 coming without the factions mode….so its a half game just like they did with unc4 ps5 version, no online. Tlou 2 story was shit but why no multiplayer whyyy ???? The unch 1,2,3 and tlou times were the best. Now naughty dog tasted big money with there tongues, they dont give a fuck about fans. 70 bucks for all this ??? Naughty Dog lost my respect long time ago.

I do agree with you, though, I think the problem which this game represents (and lies "hidden") is much bigger than it's price. Firstly, if you think about it, really, what exactly did they "remake" here? Naughty dog, basically went into their own game's source code, updated the models/assets (which most were taken directly from TLOU2) & maybe some of the game mechanics (which probably also were migrated from TLOU2). The amount "re-making" should have been relatively small. Now, I'm not saying that updating the original source code was an easy task. It's definitely within the scope of few months to a year timeframe (depending on the size of the dedicated team). But it's, by no means, the complicated, long and tedious process of making an entirely new game. Neither story-line nor level planning were needed. Also, voice acting had already been done and most (if not all) of the in-game designing/coding were just there already (ready to be "re-skinned"). Even most of the team members required for producing and developing an original game were probably left out of this. So, basically, this "remake" is actually the "remaster", if we put it into more correct terms, and the "remaster" we got for the PS4 was an export which supports higher resolution & higher FPS (should have been a regular PS4 update for the original PS3 game). Secondly, in my opinion, the price is non-significant. They're pricing it as an original title for the "new crowd" (it's an excuse, obviously) but it's gonna drop fast (maybe, really fast)... as you can see, from the case I was trying to make in the paragraph above, it's their business model and nothing new. Lastly, and the bigger problem (again, in my opinion), is that this remake is not being released for the PS4 when there's no reason why it shouldn't. Because, as we established, nothing in this "remake" is "Next Gen". It's a legit PS4 title, as much as TLOU2. And why is this a problem? Well, I think Sony has finally realized that while they wanted to keep the PS4 alive (by releasing the new Sony-exclusive/major-league/franchise-defining titles) for both consoles (and by that might be limiting the graphic potential/fidelity of the games), the PS5 ended up, 2 years after its launch, without no real leverage over the PS4 (especially the PS4 Pro). So, they asked (forced... who knows?) ND to make this (redundant) "Remake", to show the PS5's "mighty" power and it ended up being very much "Last Gen" (in every aspect)... A move which makes a lot of people I've talked to (including myself) wonder "why should we even buy a PS5?". And no, a tactile game-pad isn't a good enough reason.
