Just a little on early days Drag Racing with Cleveland’s.
Sure there is also others who Drag Raced in Pro Stock with Cleveland’s & did well in there own right.
But Bob Glidden is the topic here.
On limited budget, all hands on.....& behind the wheel himself, there’s no other like Bob Glidden.
Definitely “one of” the first who played around with extreme modifications, the TR intakes, the 4V Hi-Port Heads, Stroke Rod Combinations etc....
He’s done it all, & pioneered 🏆 🏁
Please take time to pause & read some of his answers about , secrets, modifications etc....
He did quote once that.....
“Only a Glidden family member will only get to see or know some of his secrets & modded parts”

The 78 Fairmont went 32 consecutive round wins and I'm almost sure it was Cleveland powered. I live 3 miles from Bob Glidden's Whiteland home/shop in Greenwood Indiana. He's always been my Ford hero. BG was a hard worker and a very keen fellow. NHRA was always trying to tame him because GM's cash flow to the sanctioning body. Just like NASCAR did to the Elliotts in the 80s. When a Ford gains an advantage under the standing rules, the sanctioning body always steps in and applies the brake. RIP Mr. Glidden

I thought I would share this with y'all; First off, I'm a nobody. I had an older mentor when I was 20 something. He was a Ford fan, then I became one. I studied the Cleveland and read many articles on them. I had a 78 Fairmont 2 door (not the Futura) in 1984. I gathered all the parts for the Cleveland build for the little Fox body Fairmont but fell on hard times and had to sell all. The cat that bought my 4V Cleveland (quenched chamber) assembled it and whipped up on a bunch of guys at a local asphalt track that bowties dominated on. A very proud moment for me that my creation won a feature race. I credit my mentor and of course Bob Glidden.

Glidden could have been even faster than others if he had been able to have race parts built the way he needed them built for him to developed more power from the motor. Having to machine the exhaust ports off the heads and install port plates is a perfect example of how Glidden probably wished he could cast his own heads. But NHRA probably would have forced Glidden to run a total of 500 extra pounds on his car because he would have been even more faster than his competition. RIP Bob Glidden.

@danielwilson6665 2 года назад
@Greg Korte … It’s been said that all good things come to an end… or do they ? I’m 68 years old and still active in building and racing Clevelands. I’ve owned the same 1970 Mach 1 for 39 years. It’s an original 351C, 4-V (M-code) car but the original engine was long gone when I purchased it from the previous owner. Someone had swapped in a ‘72 Cleveland so I didn’t feel like I was committing a sin when I began doing engine upgrades. I was also fascinated by the engines that Bob and Etta Glidden were dominating Pro Stock with so as soon as I got my Mustang, I began looking for the right parts to build my own. The D1AE-GA quench heads I located were professionally modified by Endyn Inc. and they have the full high port exhaust conversion along with the other modifications done by Glidden and the rest of the dominant Pro Stock Cleveland teams back in the day. The heads came with a choice of Endyn intakes that had been extensively modified in the plenum area and port matched to the raised and filled intake ports of the heads. I definitely regret not getting the tunnel ram intake that was available but I had my mind set on using the original factory installed Shaker Scoop Ram Air setup because it’s a rare option due to the relatively low number of Cleveland powered ‘70 Mach 1’s that they were installed on and it just looks kinda cool. I chose the Edelbrock Scorpion single plane intake instead because it’s design is a better choice for the Reed solid roller cam setup that I bought. At first, I thought a fiberglass hood modified for clearance with the Shaker assembly would be required but everything fits under the factory hood with NO room to spare 😳. Back when I was buying up parts it was almost impossible to get one of the rare Ford aluminum Cleveland blocks but I located a wholesaler that specialized in used virgin short block cores and he had a nice stash of four bolt main Clevelands only $150 each. Another regret for not buying all he had but I did end up with a couple of solid D2AE-CA 4-bolt blocks. If you ever get the itch for another Cleveland, the aftermarket choices are the best they have ever been. There are two American sources for alloy Cleveland blocks and one of them is about to release his TrackBoss Cleveland block cast in a special iron alloy. Both aluminum and iron TrackBoss blocks feature true Cleveland architecture which allows factory and aftermarket components to bolt right up. They look identical to the D2AE factory blocks but internally they have been completely re-engineered with priority main bearing oiling, thicker support bulkheads, billet 4-bolt main caps, longer cylinder walls for additional stability at BDC when using short CH stroker pistons and more. Thanks to a number of Australian and American manufacturers, alloy cylinder heads are available for virtually every application possible. There are several impressive Cleveland builds on RU-vid ranging from stock block and heads to all alloy strokers in naturally aspirated trim using a single 4-V Holley being run on a dyno and bumping the 1000 horsepower mark. Awesome stuff for sure but don’t take my word on, just ask any disgruntled GM fanboy 🏁 Check out the TrackBoss details. tmeyerinc.com

I was at a IHRA nat race and we got rain. So the race is delayed. Bad right, naw I'm got so lucky. Sat and talked racing with Bob and Etta for about a half an hour. Then walked up and talked with Eddie Hill and his wife. And to make it the best time, track officials needed vehicles driving on track to heat and dry race track. My little Ranger was on the broadcast of the race later and it's a day I'll never forget. 2 weeks later Glidden and Ricky Smith were back at Milan for Superford Nats to match race their Pro Stock Birds. When I saw Bob he asked where was I during the next rain. Cool he remembered even though it was only 2 weeks. Great days

@danielwilson6665 2 года назад
@@sparkyguitar0058 …. The IHRA was the sanctioning body at Atlanta Dragway from the grand opening in 1976 until the NHRA took over in 1980. They would also put a convoy of street cars on the track driving in a continuous loop from end to end as a means of speeding up the drying process after a rain delay. They had a jet track drying machine but the cars got the job done much quicker. Sadly, 2021 was the final year for the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. After 45 years of continuous operation the facility was sold to foreign investors to be completely demolished and the land is supposed to be used to build a battery manufacturing plant for electric vehicle batteries. WHAT A TOTAL BUMMER 😵‍💫. The strip has a rich history of historic runs along with a few horrific tragedies. I enjoyed racing there and it was a good venue for spectators as well. It will be missed by many.

Bob was the dominating force in Pro Stock... He made the 351 Cleveland the legendary engine is became.... As well as the Mopar Small block... He also was a man that appreciated the fans... I was at Phoenix/Firebird around 93, he'd had a bad run & was out early... Most everyone who gets eliminated early packs up & leaves pretty quick... Not Bob, Bob made himself available to meet fans & sign autographs for most of the day.... At the time Bob was no longer winning but the fans still loved him... On a side note Warren Johnson Held the Pro-Stock title at that time.... While the fans were 50+ deep at the Glidden pits over at Warren Johnsons pits there might have been 7-8 people.... Glidden was always humble, Warren came across like he thought he was better than anyone else & that doesn't sell well with fans.....

Bob Glidden was amazing he knew Fords better Ford Motor Company knew Fords. his getting past the inherent oiling issues that the 351C had was quite a challenge in itself no doubt. and his research into flow testing the 351C head's was incredible. many of things he innovated are being designed into the parts that are being used today. and a person has to remember that he did this back before there were computers. a lot of his research had to done though trial and error. back when if a person did something and it didn't work they would have to go back to the drawing board. back when that term was used a lot. he was one of the first people that realized that the Pinto was a crappie street car but made an AWESOME race car. he was definitely an innovator ahead of innovators and his incredible success proves it no doubt.

As a snotty nosed kid in the early 70s, my family would go to the local drag strip, and we knew all the people there, from the owners to the racers, as probably half of them were related to us some way or another. The track was in the middle of nowhere in rural Dallas, Georgia. But lots of folks came to race there, and that's where I got to meet Bob Glidden. I loved his little car, with the giant tires on the back, so I just pranced right over and told him so. He was tall and lanky, buried under the car doing something, but unfolded from it and started talking to me like family. I was all of 7-8 years old. He put me in the seat, told me to make big engine sounds, and laughed uncontrollably when I gave it my all. Now in my late 50s, I still remember him, and what a memory to cherish all these years. For those that are getting a sense of something about the track, it is the track that Richard Petty was drag racing at, and when his car wrecked, it tragically killed a child in the stands.

Really good work here, I like scouring the older photos for little detail like how plumbing etc was run. It is quite evident that no detail was left to chance from what i see. One of the few things the low buck racer can do is match the big guys attention to detail in that department . Years ago when building my 66 Mustang I decided to put the battery in the trunk and doing that I figured why not put the starter solenoid near by the starter and save some cable weight, a few years after that while checking out a book on the original Shelby team cars I found I had copied them without knowing it , felt good to be of the same mindset as the real deal engineers.
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 3 года назад
Adding that solenoid out back , and rerouting the original S wire to pull it in, keeps that big old + cable dead that runs to the front , except during cranking. That shit scares me when I see it with the + hot all the time ,not a cool scenario in an accident.

Saw him at Detroit Dragway in '75. Knew his name, but he had a brand new (DIEHARD decals only on the car) Pinto, white, no lettering, nothing. I didn't even realize who it was. lol Wayne Gapp was there, playing around with one of Gapp & Roush's old Pintos. He clicked off an 8.35, and broke a valve spring on the top end on that pass. Can't recall what Bob was running, but I'm sure he was testing in legal trim. Tuesday nights, full flopper shows--32 cars. Unreal, to think back to things that USED to BE in drag racing. RIP, "Mad Dog." and Detroit Dragway... 😪

Kent Ford (no Relation) did the raised exhaust port for NASCAR. We had one of the first sets in 1977 and man they mad a ton more usable power, then Ford Motor company wanted the heads so they hired Kent to work with Ernie Elliott and they won a ton of races after that for all the Ford teams. First set of heads had aluminum inserts bolted into the intake and exhaust. To close up the huge Cleveland ports for NASCAR use as they didn't need that WOT flow as much. Then Kent machined off the exhaust similar to what Glidden had done and bolted on the aluminum ports that looked like the Glidden heads. Kents heads looked more "Stock" that Bobs and the exhaust flange was quite a bit thicker, but NHRA and NASCAR didn't have a rules for that. I'm sure Kent picked up that tech from Bob by seeing what he had done. Another note, the NASCAR Cleveland heads and blocks came from Australia, they were better castings with high nickel content.

Lee Sheppard gave ol’ Bob a pretty good run for his money before his tragic death in a practice accident. Reahr-Morrison race engines were legendary & built right here in the DFW/ Metroplex. The ‘70’s & ‘80’s were a great time to be a NHRA fan.

Yes Lee was really good but they were cheaters. They used totally illegal head castings that solid with no water jackets so obviously they were not production items. @@Joetrout They did it to screw over the Bob. NHRA knew that GM had nothing that could run with the Cleveland even with the BS lbs /cuin penalty. Bob told me he was running a 327 just to keep the car at min weight,/ The GM boys were cheaters. They used totally illegal solid head castings with no water jackets so they could port them anyway they liked. How more power would Bob have made with solid heads in the 351 and the boss? Early Fords from the 1960’s had oil problems because they oiled the cam first then what was left went to the mains and rods. The FE engines were like that with the exception of the 427 side oiler blocks which came in 1966 after they had been being built for a couple years. Then the Boss style Cleveland head was a later development and I guess Ford didn’t learn about the oil system. Glidden figured it out as he figured out so much about the engine and made it a front runner in the class.

You probably aren’t going to believe this, and if someone told me about something similar I wouldn’t believe them. After High School I went to UTI to get a certificate in Auto Mechanics. Living in Arizona competition for mechanic jobs was crazy. Too many guys coming here from back east to get away from the snow. A new, young kid had little chance of getting a good job. While I was there I met a guy who had won the Pit Stop Challenge in California. The challenge was to troubleshoot and repair a car with a given problem. Several teams competed and his team won. Ford wanted him to go to their engineering school, but they required a certificate first. We became good friends and we would take our lunch together most days. One day we talked about our favorite Ford engines. He was an FE fan and I loved the Cleveland. During the discussion I pulled a piece of paper out of my notebook and hand drew what I would do to modify the Cleveland head, raised ports, three intake runner volumes to work on 289’s, 302’s and 351’s and 400’s. Since they were already building Clevors, I wanted the heads to work on smaller engines along with those who needed low end torque and not high RPM race engines. Don took the drawing and years later, in 1994 I picked up an SVO catalog from a friend who worked at a ford dealership. In the cylinder head section I found the heads I had designed years before! The only difference I. Oiled find was the combustion chamber shape, which was just like the ones Bob Glidden created. Unfortunately, Pro Stock racing had moved away from small blocks, instead allowing a 500 cubic inch limit, but the heads were used in NASCAR racing. Shortly after the SVO heads were released, Yates ported and modified them and they became known as Yates heads. If I had had a facility to cast my design and measure their port flow I might have done the same thing!

That’s a cool story KC thanks for sharing👍🏼🏁, i do believe you💯, when your super keen & passionate about stuff i never doubt👍🏼🏁. The first alloy performance style Cleveland head (A3 Motorsport) was designed by the late 70s -early 80s & derived from the ongoing mods made to the 4V Cleveland head at the time by ProStock racers (filled floor intk, raised exhst plates, Bob Gliddens welded up/re-shaped chambers etc) so the A3 was the start of alloy performance Cleveland heads so to speak🤷🏻‍♂️, but your right…. These big name guys/corps do gain knowledge from the average racer or “know how” guy & put it in action😕🤷🏻‍♂️ i also have had a similar thing or things where I’ve thought of an idea or part & realised yrs down the track someone has actually put it in production 🤦🏻‍♂️lol it’s how some of us gearheads are in sync & keeenly thinking always about hp on certain applications.
