Enjoy my reaction as I watch Ralph Fiennes, Anna Taylor Joy, and one of my old favorites, Judith Light, in THE MENU. Pretentious paradise turns into Foodie Nightmare! As someone who loves food movies and surprising plots, I adored this movie, it's so much fun! A glorious revenge story with lots of familiar faces. This is one of those movies that reminds me why I love movies so much.

This movie is an interesting commentary on art’s relationship to class and elitism. The chef despairs because at the height of his skill all he can do is serve people who don’t really deserve it, whether it’s rich snobs who don’t care or pretentious critics who use it to boost their egos. He himself is an egotistical monster who has come to have everything in his kitchen revolve around his prestigious personna. It’s a fascinating dynamic to see play out.

And there's no truly good guy or bad guy in this story. They're all kind of awful and redeemable, but not really given the chance here.

@@OldLadyReacts i could argue Tyler is a bad guy because he hired a sex worker to be his date knowing she would die. He had no care for her as a human being.
@OldLadyReacts
@OldLadyReacts Год назад
@@AmyL._orcgirl Did he really believe that everyone would die, though? Or did he just think that they would be made to think that during the evening as part of "the experience?"

@@OldLadyReacts i read that the original script indicated Tyler thought he'd live, which tracks. But he's so self absorbed that Margot, a mere sex worker, is disposable- which is a sadly very common idea for people. I think, if Tyler had friends, he could have asked one of them, but opted for someone society overlooks on the off chance Chef tried to kill them.

Out of all reactions I've seen you are the only one how recognised that it was his own fault. Like he didn't have to serve the elites. He could just make great food for common people and make desant living and be happy about his craft. His misery is really of his own making.

Ambition drives people so far. But it takes breaking that cycle, to realize that even where you are now, you'll be *so* much happier than up there with the idiots. As someone who jumped ship from the higher echelons of society, I can say for a fact the commentary of this, from both the angle of the elitism it was mocking, and the nihilism of Slowik, are both really really true. There is *never* any appeasing that circle, and the only time you do, is the day you're so miserable you're pretty much done. I broke that cycle myself 2 years ago and made myself happier than I've ever been in 15 years, so.

his knowledge about the bread is fantastic. medieval age, mayans, ancient china, ancient egypt. yes 12,000years is the approximate time humans have been consuming bread. the bread they have in the past is different than we have today, but it is all the same ingredient.
