The 3D printing is an excellent idea and I am glad you have decided to get the plating done outside. Both will speed up the project considerably. You can still perfect your own casting and plating process without the pressure. Its all looking good!

@@peterbaranyai6057 I grew up around all kinds of motors and engines, I just love POWER! I find that 2 stroke engines are in many ways superior, and some of their alleged drawbacks are most likely due to engineering flaws, not flaws in the principle of being a 2 stroke cycle engine in and of its self. Detroit diesels, back when they were 2 stroke, were much more powerful than the 4 stroke engines, but got booted because of 'emissions' issues, which, if properly corrected [which the MTD corporation went on to do] would not be any problem. I know that the same is true for 2 stroke gasoline engines as well. They are just not engineered properly for 'acceptable' emissions and efficiency for the most part. I can not say wholesale of course, because, like this one here being made so marvelously, the final results are far from known still.

That is really exciting. It is amazing how far the technology has come. There is still something very cool about casting your own cylinder out of molten aluminum and observing the whole process, but when you can spend a handful of hours waiting for a printed one to come out nearly perfect with only minor machining needed, it's a no-brainer. That was especially cool for Cobra to offer up their services.

I am currently using 3D metal BMD printing for my own projects and capstone stirling engine. You really have to look in depth about the style of 3D metal process, and what material they are using (some may not take coatings well). Also you will still have to finish bore, print it undersize and drill, ream, and hone it out. Print bore vertically too, or it will be oval ish. Good luck my friend

My vote goes to the 3D print option. It brings the cylinder wall dead straight and round, so it's easier to bore and plate. Remember to leave the extra space for the coating, so you can clean bore it, and file it too. Thicker the coating, stronger the cylinder. I could even recommend a coated steel sleeve, considering the shape of your channels.
@brodeacii
@brodeacii 4 года назад
Good day, I’m sure that you remember the need to reduce the friction coefficient in the cylinder, which will have a beneficial effect on increasing the engine speed and ultimately the power output. The material and casting method that you used gave shells and pores in the finished product, this can be seen in the video. I recommend that you consider the possibility of manufacturing a 3D printed cylinder made of aluminum with a further coating of it, galvanically Nikasil, (sure in your region should be an organization engaged in the application of such coatings) followed by honing. Of the negative consequences, the effect of the composition of the combustible mixture on the selected coating composition should also be analyzed.I am sure you will succeed in making the most powerful 2t motor.
@jackmills5071
@jackmills5071 4 года назад
He did the nikasil coating himself, it's not the the same compound, but it's similar and has a lower friction coefficient.

I definitely think 3D printing more jugs is the way to go. You can always keep the casting stuff to cast other parts too, like custom hubs and misc brackets. But once you get 1 design perfected on the computer...you could literally print like 10 cylinders! lol.

Bravo - Great project! impressive casting/machining! And bravo cobra-aero for the generous offer! Tough decision: Knowing little about your project so pls excuse my presumption. How sure are you about this cylinder's design? If you suspect the cylinder geometry will likely change several times it may be worthwhile staying the course and run the beast! - maybe have the head printed while you work-out the cylinder? With 3d Printing maybe you can design it such to keep the water jacket and press-in different liners? Do the printed parts need to be annealed? FWIW re:bore - read where people have used bearing balls to do a final 'shaping' for a near-perfect ID. An added benefit is the first layers are compressed. What have you allowed for expansion?

Is that sealer called yamabond # 4 ? If so it's one of the best for a lot of uses as yamaha sells it to seal up new engine cases that have no gaskets ...it's more "watery" than something like 3M RTV , .. But once it sets up it gets a lot more denser than regular RTV ..BUT you can still press your finger nail into it so apply it in one very thin coat ..we have never used it for a head gasket replacement , you might want to check the heat range to make sure , but i think you will be fine . I think you should apply in on one mating side and let it "tack up" and then assemble your pieces !

@daniel_6741
@daniel_6741 4 года назад
You can not bore a plated cylinder to achieve a tight tolerance and the necessary cross pattern honing produces. Without honing the oil has no place to stay inbetween the piston and the bore so it will rub mechnical and fail due to overheating caused by friction. All thats needed is a proper hone, just give that thing to a dedicated machine shop an tell the piston diameter, they will hone the bore to the right or demanded size.
@DeliciousDeBlair
@DeliciousDeBlair 4 года назад
@@daniel_6741 I can bore any metallic surface you can throw at me. I might need diamond to do so, but I can doi it all the same. Technically what would be best is what is called a 'bore-grind' where the cylinder is set up on a bore grinder/honer machine and carefully sized then surfaced. Since they make some low melting point aluminum solder, one could even go so far as to clean cut the entire bore, carefully aluminum solder it back INSIDE minimum dimension, THEN re-bore it to pre-plating bore diameter [with proper surface resolution] and THEN go back and re-plate it. A helluva lotta work? Yeah. Wiorth it? That's subjective to the individual. Better plan? Laser print the whole cylinder from titanium and then bore, hone and plate. As far as the 'required surface roughness for holding oil' that is a quality that a highly skilled and informed machinist can pre-program into the boring/finishing process just as accurately as an old world high precision manually operated engine hone, and far more precisely than a human hand. Ideally a steel, cast iron, or ceramic type cylinder sleeve could be incorporated into the engine when it is being cast for a far more rigid, reliable and long lasting surface for the piston and its rings to travel within, even if you skipped casting and actually laser printed the engine head in place around it.
