The people of Fredericksburg are also wondering where the money they are accused of having is. Yes! I agree. Musical lyrics have always been written about what resonates with the writer's soul, and they become popular based upon what resonates with the listeners' souls. Oliver hails from Virginia, from which the majority of citizens are extremely poor, much poorer than the majority of the rest of the country. Whereas people from poor inner cities often have the latest Nike shoes on their feet, people in the Appalachians still often times have no shoes at all on their feet, especially the children. Songs of oppression have always come from out of the Appalachian region (such as Coal Miner's Daughter, etc.), and Oliver's song appears to be simply a modern-day twist on the topic. Of course, nowadays, we all know why citizens in the United States, especially in certain regions, remain oppressed. It's no secret that the "rich men north of Richmond" in Washington DC (politicians) hold the key to the survival of the people of the Appalachians and elsewhere in this country. The part of the song about fudge rounds especially resonates with the hardworking men and women in this country. Why? It's because people who aren't working at all are getting welfare benefits such as food stamps, yet those who are working full-time may make $20 too much in order to qualify for welfare benefits and, in this economy, they still cannot afford to feed their families adequately. This song doesn't seem to be political, but rather, it seems to be about a portion of citizens in this country who are struggling to survive. I guess if people on the left or right feel offended by the lyrics of this song, they need to look no further than the way that politicians are voting in measures that adversely affect certain portions of our country and they can see exactly why 'Rich Men North of Richmond' is such a popular song.

You 100% missed something and it's kind of shocking to me because I really didn't think complaining about "the north" was subtle enough to fool anyone. But I'm from the rural south where people actually think like this, so maybe it's more obvious to me. This rhetoric literally goes back to the Civil War, or as these people call it, The War of Northern Aggression. He isn't literally talking about "the north" per se, but he isn't talking specifically about DC either. For this brand of right wing rhetoric, north vs. south is (for reasons that, again, have to do with the Civil War) a stand in for urban vs. rural, and ultimately for liberal vs. conservative. But more insidiously, this isn't *just* a right-wing rhetorical framing, because the way he's using it invokes a specifically *populist* flavor of right-wing rhetoric. Historically in America, populism was pretty evenly spread across the left-right political divide, and if you look at the true left (as in left of liberal) you still see a lot of populist elements, but starting with Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, populism came fully into the mainstream in American right wing ideology. So NOW the north/south divide as it exists in the minds of US conservatives isn't just a stand-in for the urban/rural divide or the left/right divide, it's also a stand-in for the elite/working class divide (and we can throw "globalist"/"patriot" in there too while we're at it). By using empty protectionist talking points about how he was going to bring back American jobs (which was never feasible, and wouldn't have been economically advisable even if it had been), Trump was able to win the Rust Belt. And in doing so, he appropriated what's an essentially leftist class struggle narrative--the honest working class little guy vs. the rich elitist big shots exploiting their labor--and adapting it to fit right wing ideology. This process involved anti-intellectualism (equating elitism with being educated and hence, with being liberal or urban) and an increased scrutiny toward immigrants and largely imaginary "welfare queens," painting them as enemies of the white American working class. That's not to say that these elements weren't already present in American conservatism, but they were only loosely related features of it until Trump came along and tied them together into an utterly superficial but emotionally resonant class narrative. The protectionist / anti-globalist features of Trump's brand was more of a real shift for conservativism, since those had been relatively evenly spread between the fringes of both parties before that, with the mainstream Republican party having a more pragmatically free trade-oriented economic platform than it has now. It was an extractionist platform then (the wealth will trickle down, they told us) and it's extractionist now, but at least previously most Republicans knew to keep their nationalist streak in a separate bucket form their extractionist economics, whereas Trump made his nationalism a guiding principle of his economic platform. There's an obvious irony to the fact that Trump of all people was the one to be able to merge the disparate ideological strands of conservatism and working class populism, given that he himself is elitism personified and has never worked a day in his life, but that irony was lost on his target demographic of rural and working class whites, because that demographic just isn't educated enough or politically savvy enough to understand the vacuousness of his rhetoric.

Yeah I think it is, especially after checking out his RU-vid channel and seeing a video in his playlist where two guys claim that Israel did 911, and two more about how there were Israeli people dancing in the streets after 911. Then he has an intro to his channel where he says that the left and the right are both controlled by the same evil people and then he just pauses. The way he beats around the bush and keeps hinting at it makes me pretty convinced he's probably a Neo Nazi. Then he keeps saying he's right down the center politically. the food industry isn't an unregulated market by any means, and maybe if you cooked your own food instead of buying premade, preprocessed junk food you could eat nutritiously and still save a pretty penny, but i guess time is money, and mcdonalds is too convenient to refuse.

The real cheapest healthy foods are whole plant foods which I do encourage people to eat and cook with, however it is undeniably disincentivized by the marketing power and bulk buying / manufacturing power of giant conglomerates and fast food empires. I ought to have said poorly regulated, but if you're nit picking because you'd prefer a less regulated food market you're barking up the wrong tree. Loose marketing regulations that are intensely lobbied allow companies to market foods full of hydrogenated and saturated fats, sodium, fructose, and heavily processed red meat as healthy, wholesome, and hearty. On top of that, studies are showing that the same foods in these groups are decreasing in nutritional value as years go by. Food deserts also have major implications on what poor and working people have available to eat. The FDA talking points are foolish and unfounded, although I have no doubt that some Limbaugh wannabe has wholeheartedly convinced you that you can protect yourself from Nestle better than their slaves can.
