Thicc Boi Nicholson actually played the Joker. He was based on 5 decades of comic book appearances. Burton read the comics and he Nicholson nailed the character. All Ledger's character had in common with the Joker was a name and a costume. Nolan literally ignored the source material and created an arsonist who wore face paint. Ledger only read one comic in his whole life. He read The Killing Joke only because they gave it to him as a reference. Clearly you don't like the Joker, you like psychotic arsonists in face paint.

Harvey Dent is another, often omitted, key difference between the two films. In the Dark Knight, Dent is presented as Batman's remplacement without a mask. He is brave, seems incorruptible and he's dating Rachel. Bruce starts believing Dent could get things done. He wants to hang up the cape and try to get back with Rachel. That's until Joker interferes. He makes Dent go through Rachel's last moments as he severely burns, incapable of saving her life, with the guilt of having survived instead of her. Dent's transformation is profound as he becomes the very thing he had sworn to fight against. After his death they have to cover the whole thing up and pretend like Dent never became two-face. In 1989 Batman, Dent is insignificant, he just makes you go : "hey that's Lando Calrissian!"

People are confused what the word "better" means. Here is the truth: Jack Nicholson played the Joker much more precisely and accurate to the Joker that existed in the Comics Heath Ledger invented a new Joker and did an excellent job at it! Nice BS. Bale is by far worst batman ever, only match by one person. Batman voice IS joke, Bale is joke, choreography is joke. HOW can batman make people afraid if HE IS pussy like Bale version was ? And Joke, even if great, had nothing to do with Comics version.

ares354 ares354 I actually like his voice because The Dark Knight aimed for a more realistic approach. If Batman or any superhero type of figure was real, they would do what comes natural to cover up their voice, they wouldnt care how dumb it sounds. I gotta agree the choreography is garbage, but people dont watch the Dark Knight as much for the fighting as they do for the story and dialogue (which is absolutely amazing imo). Whether you like Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne or not really does come down to personal taste, but I think hes good as Batman and the best as Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton was definitely the best Batman, but I didnt find his Bruce Wayne very interesting). And as for the Joker, hes so damn good and freaky that I could give two shits if it had to do with the comics version or not

The greatest contrast in these two films is within the respective eras. Burton’s Batman was filmed at a time when it wasn’t common for a film to capture the darkness and depth that we so ubiquitously see today. In other words, Burton’s Batman had to play the Joker for laughs at times, as they couldn’t take him but so dark or deep. That said, for its time, Nicholson’s Joker was both dark and deep. Few “family” films of the 80’s got nearly as bold. Had Burton been able to do then what he could do today, that film likely would have played a lot differently. Ultimately, I find it hard to compare the two. Yes, it is technically the same character, but both Jack and Heath did something in their respective day and age that no one else could have done comparably. Hence the fact that we are still talking about them both. Cheers!

You can compare 2 of the most abstract movies or things in the world if you look for what they have in common. Apples and oranges: which is sweeter, which is tarter, which is juicier, which tastes better? A girl and a boy: who’s more athletic, who’s smarter, who’s more patient, and who’s a better person? Astrophysics and a wooden table: which is more important to advances in technology, what materials make these up, and when were these discovered? Jack Nocholson’s Joker and Heath Ledger’s Joker: which Joker fits the comic book character better, which character has stronger symbolism, which Joker has more memorable lines and powerful scenes, which Joker is more entertaining to watch for the viewer, and which Joker is better? The idea that two things that aren’t exactly the same can’t be compared is a fallacy. The reason we compare things is to point out their differences, not their similarities. Would you compare two identical apples? No, of course not, you would compare two apples that taste different, or look different, or have different sizes. That’s exactly what Nicholson and Ledger are, two apples. It’s easy to compare.

@thesentinel5523
@thesentinel5523 5 лет назад
Correct. And it was completely intended that way from the day Burton came aboard the project. While alot of wimps like to say "oh TDK made me feel and get in touch with my feminine side as opposed to Batman 89 which is a dumb white dudes's "EMPTY" 80s action movie" Bullshit. Producer Michael Uslan and Director Tim Buton are very upfront about this. The special features on the making of blu-ray for Batman 89', Uslan stated that he and Tim wanted to go back to the roots of the character as he was originally intended to be by his creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane: as this dark creature of the night hunting criminals without pity or remorse. But these were characteristics of the 1930s-40s pulp comic book protagonists and very adult in comparison to the first superhero ever created, Superman. So who can we point to (that more than likely Kane and Finger loved and were influenced by themselves) in Pop Culture of late 1930s America, who's popularity was on par with Superman but in complete contrast to the tone and ethics of the big blue boy scout? The Shadow. (www.quora.com/Would-it-be-fair-to-say-the-character-of-The-Shadow-had-a-powerful-influence-on-Bill-Fingers-and-Bob-Kanes-interpretation-and-creation-of-Batman), "THE SHADOW" is the closest to Who and What Batman was created to be as a character, both conceptually and tonally based on how Finger reflected that in those golden age story-lines. It's an undeniable connection which influenced the entire character going foward despite the fact that the 1950s, 60s, and 70s didn't care to reflect in depictions. It's also a fact that modern Batman fanboys (especially the ultra-moralistic bleeding heart Nolan fans) will scoff at due to the use of guns by the hero, casual killing of bad-guys, and flippant attitude towards human life BUT you don't ever get a return to a dark and gritty Batman that Frank Miller most notably did in the mid 80s without FIRST AND FOREMOST Respecting what the creators of the character chose: the grim and ruthless creature of the night that set up his entire first year prior to getting his own comic and introducing Robin in Batman#1. Batman 89 and Batman Returns have always been the accurate depiction of THAT character based on how Kane and Finger, prior to being watered down in the early 1940s, intended him.

@DrSPF23
@DrSPF23 5 лет назад
Sharp Design Actually there is a key difference, in the 80s Batman had his no kill rule but he was inconsistent about it. In Ten Nights of the Beast Batman lets KGB Beast starve to death. There was another comic at the time where Batman disintegrated Ra,s Al Ghul and shot him into space. Robin gets mad at Batman for killing him and Batman simply says " did I Robin". Considering Batman doesn't,t know he is in a comic he probably presumes that this is the last of Ra,s Al Ghul. Now I have only seen certain panels of this comic so maybe their is an explanation but nowadays Batman "never kills". By the time batfleck came out their had been hundreds of comics that explored Batman,s no kill rule. So Batman killing so nonchalantly ruins chances of these storylines being adapted. I haven,t watched the video above yet, but in my opinion the Dark Knight is the most overrated movie of all time.

@Conrad Kujur true he was the perfect mix, Jack Nichols Joker was the bridge to get from the original Joker on the TV show to Heath ledger's Joker. The Joker in the TV show with all the way goofy and Heath ledger's Joker was more sadistic, Jack Nichol's Joker was in-between. How do you get from a goofy Joker to a more sadistic Joker, Jack's "Joker" you just blew my mind. Lol

Nicholson's Joker was more faithful to the comics where he was a psychopathic killer that had a more lighthearted and comedic method to his crimes. Ledger's Joker was just darker to a man with no real goals other then to spread chaos and anarchy just for the shits sake of doing so. There wasn't any real motive or clues to why he wanted that other then ,"Hey he's the joker." which felt kind of empty and just to have a crazy antagonist they made him that way felt like there was no thought behind it. He didn't feel like the Joker alot of people were used to. He played a great role non the less but to say Ledger was the Joker is subjective. Both men played phenomenal roles but both of them differed greatly.

@@Darth1Marik I'm not talking about preference, I am referring to you saying Nicholson's Joker is more "faithful". He is faithful only if you consider those Golden and Silver age comics that people don't really care about... for good reasons. Joker is a character who transcends the concept of character. Joker represents the idea of humanity's fragility to defend oneself from going insane. "One bad day..." The Joker could be anyone that can't stand the trauma he/she once faced. By giving the Joker a confirmed backstory and identity, you basically go against the core principle of the character set up by Alan Moore and nearly everyone who comes after. Joker's identity and backstory being shrouded in mystery and contradictions are what makes the Joker great. It's not what specific incident causes him to snap; it could be anything, and it would affect any normal person in a similar, or even more extreme effect. That's the Joker. Nolan incorporates that idea by having Ledger's Joker speaking his contradicting past that reflects the people and situations he is currently encountering. He knows the Joker is not just a mass murderer but a mass murderer who would allow his targets to survive to show him/her an even worse nightmare-- one that's terrifying because it's real-- that Nothing really matters. Burton brought the Dark Knight and the Crown to life on the big screen, but his work, despite retaining the cheesiness of the comic book, doesn't capture many core elements of the characters and stories. "Ledger's Joker was just darker to a man with no real goals other then to spread chaos and anarchy just for the shits sake of doing so." That's why I asked if you really read comics...

There is a reason there are so many documentaries and youtube videos talking about the genius of joker but not many about Jack. There is a reason the dark night is considered one of the best if not the best super hero movies and that is because of heath. There isnt much special about Jack's joker that i think you could tell me(other then oh well he was more like the comics he had a dark side and a bad side, just a bunch of stuff that heath took and made better). Heath did an amazing job as the joker maybe best acting job ever. You can try and seem as cool as you want for liking jack. But I'm sorry most everyone agrees with me.

I'd say Nicholson is way more comic accurate, but Ledger's Joker is by far the superior character, there is a reason he won an Oscar for that role. And yeah, it might be suspicious that someone who played a role in an Action/Comicbook movie could win an Oscar, but there have been a few people who were nominated posthumusly. As far as i can remember there has only been one other guy who actually won besides Ledger.

Nicholson's Joker isn't obsessed with Batman and is more interested in Vicky Vale. Comic book Joker would never have any interest in Batman's girlfriend unless she was a ploy to get Batman in a trap. Something that Nolan understood and used to a greater extent in The Dark Knight.

MotherChucker, if the only thing that the Academy acknowledged about The Dark Knight was Heath Ledger's death, it wouldn't get nominated in 7 other categories, unrelated to Ledger, and there wouldn't be talks from the Academy itself of it getting Best Picture.

MotherChucker, Sigourney Weaver and Johny Depp both received Oscar nominations for action movie roles. The idea of Ledger receiving one isn't preposterous. The Academy simply does't give it in that category very often. Ledger gave the best performance of any action movie, probably. Which is why he was recognized.

What I especially like about the scene with the two boats is that there's no guarantee that pushing the button will destroy the other boat. Just like the Joker switched who was going to die on Batman the people have no idea of what may be there but the Joker still as the Joker who would have enjoyed the idea that people would push the button to kill the other people and wind up dead themselves. this movie is by far my favorite action superhero movie.

Thank you for pointing this out. I've wondered that too. A lot of other people simply assume that the controls would do what the Joker says they'll do. Maybe it's because the best liars and manipulators tend to use the truth to their advantage? But others - and here's why I think you might be right about the bombs - don't care if they're believed or not. They win either way. There's no need to maintain the facade of truth. The Joker wins no matter which boat gets blown up. If the prisoners press the button and detonate the bomb on their OWN ship, they die - and the people on the other boat get blamed for it, even though they'll protest. Same thing goes for the civilians. So really, it could go either way, but at the end of the day the Joker is more interested in creating Chaos than making people live with the knowledge that they killed others to survive. That's a little too self-righteous.

One of the reasons that Batman '89 and The Dark Knight can be compared is because they are... well... Batman. Other than that, we are looking at two completely incomparable things. Batman '89 was intentionally a dark comedy. There is a reason Tim Burton directed it. Like there is a reason Christopher Nolan directed The Dark Knight; to deliver a crime drama. Crime drama is not in Burton's skill set like dark comedy is not in Nolan's. Each movie is great and the stellar performances of Nicholson and Ledger are outstanding in both. Nicholson is just playing Nicholson in clown makeup. NO ONE could have pulled off Batman '89's Joker other than Nicholson. Ledger was a singularity; a freak; a one-time only event that came together at the right time and could have been accomplished by almost any actor driven enough to want to understand the material. That person just happened to be Ledger. Ledger's Joker required every ounce of creative energy he could call upon. Nicholson's Joker was effortless and accomplished with ease. But in the end I adore BOTH Jokers. One a product of timing; the other a product of its time.

Bob, I don't want you to hate me. It's just hard for me to choose. Both Nicholson's and Ledger's Jokers were BRILLIANT! Logically, I can compare both in many ways; however, emotionally I just cannot bring myself to it because I like both so much.

ejeckk I think as much as I hate to admit it, you are absolutely right. I believe Ledger was at a point in his career where he wanted to immerse himself and master his role. I absolutely loved The Dark Knight and everything about it as a story, but as you stated any actor driven to produce a masterpiece performance can deliver something like this maybe once in their lifetime. Nicholson is being Nicholson which was just what Burton wanted for his film. Two Jokers, and two paths that lead to making iconic characters in Cinema history.

I'm glad to see people showing Batman respect in the comments because to be honest while I appreciate your analysis I must say that there are some scenes from Batman that you missed talking about. When Bruce finds out that Joker killed his parents you can see the pain he is in, the vulnerability and inner struggle. The same can be said for when Bruce grieves for his parents in the alley where they were killed, Keaton's acting there is so effective and says a lot through facial expressions instead of dialogue. Why these scenes get ignored is a mystery to me because they are really powerful. Now of course I am in no way dismissing Chris Nolan's films, Begins and Dark Knight are really great but people need to stop comparing the them to Burton's Batman because they are both different. It's harsh to judge the older Batman films because they aren't deep and philosophical but they don't need to be, the Golden Age stories were self contained adventures where Batman killed I may add. The older films are homages to these comics. They are traditional in the best sort of way yet at the same time they get the pain and struggle of Bruce across really well. In Returns Penguin says to him 'You're just jealous cause I'm a genuine freak and you have to wear a mask' and Batman replies 'You might be right'. More really great stuff there. Hell even Batman Forever did an alright job of showing why Bruce does what he does. The older Batman films need to be remembered more than just being dated, mindless and goofy superhero blockbusters because they are more than that. Batman and Batman Returns were made for adults and I love them because of that, twisted and gothic yet fun and classical in their execution. Movies that I unfortunately must call underrated.

I would say Joker in Batman (1989) was more threatening because he murdered Bruce Wayne's parents in the past (as Jack Napier) and continued to murder other people especially when he became Joker. In Tim Burton's Batman (1989), Batman (Michael Keaton) kills the villains. In the Dark Knight (2008), Joker survives several times only because Batman doesn't kill.
