Foot Fatigue on the onewheel pint or onewheel XR
If you recently bought a onewheel and wonder if other people experience loss of feeling or fatigue/soreness in your feet, you are not alone. Foot fatigue is cause by a few things. Just like any other board sport, you are using muscles that you are not used to using. For example when you snowboard, the next day you are typically sore in in your legs and glutes. This is because you are constantly in a squatted position while going down the slopes.
In onewheel riding you are using your feet to control and balance on the onewheel. You are using muscles in your feet that you typically do not use. Since the one wheel is so addicting, you may find yourself on the onewheel for an extended period of time. This causes you to use those muscles that you typically don’t use for an extended period of time as well. This is one cause of foot fatigue, however, once you put in a good amount of miles on the onewheel, foot fatigue shouldnt occur as often for you.
You might notice, if you typically ride in a certain terrain, then start riding on a different type of terrain that you arent used to, you will experience foot fatigue. For example, if you typically ride on smooth paved streets and concrete, and one day ride on dirt trails for 30 minutes you probably will experience foot fatigue while riding the dirt trails. This is because you are not used to riding the trails and you need to use more stabilizer muscles to handle the trails.
Another cause of foot fatigue is being too stiff on the onewheel pint or onewheel XR. When first riding the onewheel, a person may feel uneasy and cautious which will cause you to be stiff on the onewheel. If you are too stiff on the onewheel for a long time, your feet and legs will become fatigued. Take a break, let the blood flow back into your legs and feet and ride on again. This time be a little more loose on the onewheel and the foot fatigue will also go away.
The best way to fix foot fatigue is to carve. Carving is act of turning the one wheel left and right while redistributing your weight from toe to heel. When redistributing your weight, it allows for your muscles to relax then contract, allowing muscles to relax instead of constantly being flexed.
Learning to carve is a great technique to have because it allows you to have better control over the onewheel. Carving will make you comfortable turning and knowing how the onewheel will react in different situations. It will make your reaction time faster and will help alleviate foot fatigue on the onewheel.
