During the Russian Revolution there were more revolutionairy parties, such as the Mensheviks, the Kadets and the Socialist-Revolutionaries (SRs). They all played a role in the State Duma, the Provisional Government, the Petrograd Soviet and the February Revolution and October Revolution of 1917. And later in the Russia Civil War. After the Bolshevik Coup many fled the country. Others picked up arms against the Bolsheviks. An early example was the Left SR uprising in 1918. In this video more about the history of Russian politics.

Yes and no, the bolsheviks partly won b/c all the other factions also fought each other as much as the bolsheviks. I do agree though, a bolshevik victory was unlikely, it's a shame it happened.

The Bolsheviks were also an alliance of different types of socialists, social democrats, anarchists, and all sorts of exotic things like Islamic socialists and various local nationalists. However, the core of the party really consisted of the Bolsheviks. Actually, this was one of the reasons for the further Stalinist repressions. Such a mixture of views could not exist together for long.

Not that surprising when you realize how much money Wall Street bankers like Schiff and Warburg were gifting them. You think Lev Bronstein (Trotsky) was in NYC for 3 months in 1917,riding around in expensive carriages and dining in expensive eateries, because he was on a vacation and using his Marxist revolutionary bonuses to pay for it?

It should be mentioned that the Left SRs also attempted to assassinate Lenin in July 1918. The assassin actually hit Lenin but didn't kill him; however the wound is felt by some to have contributed to the strokes that Lenin had beginning in 1921 which ended in his death in 1924. Unsurprisingly, the assassination attempt ended the cooperation between the Left SRs and the Bolsheviks.

That is completely wrong. Yes, 'Bolsheviki' means "those of the majority" and 'Mensheviki' means "those of the minority", but this is not the case. The Mensheviks were several magnitudes in greater numbers than the Bolsheviks. The origin of the distinction comes from a meeting of the editorial staff of 'Iskra' ("Sparkle"), the magazine of the Russian Social-Democrat Workers' Party. Martov's faction pushed in one direction, Lenin's faction pushed in another. The supporters of Martov just left the meeting, to which Lenin's reaction to his supporters was "Well, comrades, it seems that we have the majority ('bol'shinstvo')." After that Lenin didn't miss a chance to point out to Martov in their power struggle, that he controls the majority in the party, but this was just a hollow posture. In reality of those four parties (well, they're actually six, because the Kadets and the SRs each had a left wing and right wing the same way the Social Democrats had the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks and each party split eventually) the Bolsheviks were actually the smallest until they mushroomed by the end of 1917 and the beginning of 1918. They have carried out the October Revolution not because they had tge popular support, but because as the smallest faction they were the most disciplined, instead of quarreling about yet another declaration, they had nothing to lose and very moderate electoral support, so they needed the radically turn the table and they had no problem to throw Russia into chaos, releasing criminal prisoners and radicalised deserter soldiers and sailors in the streets, while the other parties tried to preserve some basic public order. Of those parties the Bolsheviks were the "puritan" Marxists. They pretty much followed Marx's theory of the industrial working class as the vanguard of the revolution (although that class was very, very small in the predominantly agrarian Russian Empire) and a small party of professional revolutionaries as the core of that vanguard. The Mensheviks were the "revisionist" Marxists. They also followed Marx's teachings, but tried to adopt them to the Russian reality. They called for a role of the peasants equal to that of the proletariate in the coming revolution. Lenin's 'Decree for the Land' was his attempt to out-menshevik the Mensheviks, because until then he has hardly paid any attention to the agrarian question. The SRs were by far the predominant socialist movement in Russia, far more popular than Lenin's and Martov's Social Democrats. They were "socialist patriots" and have evolved from the Russian socialist agrarian utopists - the 'Narodniks', with little to no influence from Marx's teachings. Lenin's older brother, who was radicalised and in turn his execution has radicalised Lenin himself, belonged to that movement. The split between the left SRs and the right SRs came from the fact, that the right SRs were willing to pursue their views in a parliamentary democracy, while the left SRs have kept their revolutionary fervor and thus entered a practical alliance with the Bolsheviks. In fact even the Russian Anarchists were more popular than either the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks. What made the difference was that the Bolsheviks were least concerned about the actual revolution and most concerned about their rise to power. For that reason they formed temporary alliances and crushed their opponents piece-meal. As they gained power and momentum opportunistic SRs and Mensheviks jumped aboard and those, who remained loyal and stubborn were summary dealt with. The Kadets were actually the most centric, they have placed their bets on a parliamentary democracy, had the least backbone and perished first in the fire of the Revolution.
