Hello, German here. "Half a school year" is vastly understated. We spent at least two school years on the topic. One in elementary school to get the gist of it and how horrible it was. And one in middle school with more political and gory details... That doesn't mean that it didn't come up here and there outside of these two dedicated school years, though.

If you want to learn more about the Gulags I highly recommend "Gulag: A History" by Anne Applebaum. They actually did have alot of population problems in the Gulags especially during Stalin's purges so they would regularly incite riots inside the camps so the guards and prisoners could kill each other, not to mention the forced labor till you died and the random execution quotas.

The reason "Germany" has so many names is partly due to all the different Germanic tribes. The Alemanni to the south (French) (Alemanni might mean "All people" like the standard German "Alle Menschen") The Saxons to the north (Finnish) The Polish word probably came from a proto-slavic word meaning "foreigner" or "mute" or "not us" The word "Deutschland" is a cognate of the English "Dutch," which means the people but then evolved into being Germany. The word "Germany" came from Latin when Julius Caesar called these Germanic tribes "Germania"

Isn’t the monarchy basically powerless nowadays? I know the Queen can technically refuse to give royal assent, but doing so would probably cause her to lose her head, so she never does. (I’m American, so maybe I’m wrong about all this)

Oddly, while the Brits constantly drop the 't' in the middle of words, I've never actually heard anyone drop it when saying the word "British". Probably because when it comes to the British, "t" is too important to drop. Especially into a harbour.

Well... I don't see the problem in not being able to identify people of a random monarchy. It's not like the British monarchy is important in any matter for the rest of the world.
