I don't know about podcasts, but when you speak at conferences the questions you get asked are always the same, with a new one thrown in there every few conferences. It's good to write down the questions and prepare for the future. Sounds like it makes sense that the same would happen on podcasts. Also most people are trying to figure out how to stop making up problems that didn't happen yet, telling people to actually start making up problems is such a crazy advice.
@Guineapigsreadingbooks
@Guineapigsreadingbooks 7 месяцев назад
I think I get what he means with the inventing fake problems. He probably just means that if you are stressing about a hypothetical, you should put an easy „solution“ in place to ease your mind. Show yourself that the problems are not the end of the world. Mouse died? Have a spare one. Fear a tragedy will happen? Make good memories now so you can look back fondly. Fear losing your job? Keep LinkedIn up to date and try to have a financial safety net (obviously a privilege, but if possible).

maybe it’s just me but i feel like this guy doesn’t deserve all the hate he’s getting? as an autistic person with severe generalized anxiety disorder i can easily see how just rambling out my feelings to no one in particular like this can be extremely therapeutic- and maybe it just helps him feel more comfortable to have his podcast setup 🤷‍♀️ maybe he shouldn’t post it if he doesn’t want the hate but i know personal vlogs for therapy are absolutely a thing. i also don’t think his advice is necessarily harmful but he definitely could go a better way about it. for example the noise cancelling headphones: like i said before i’m autistic and being in overstimulating crowded spaces (like an airport as he mentioned) can send me into full panic attacks and/or meltdowns, but you do NOT need to drop 400$ for a solution. my noise cancelling headphones are actually those ones that they use for shooting ranges, twenty bucks on amazon and they’re a lifesaver. on another note i wanted to mention the catastrophizing from the first reel, which is a very common symptom of anxiety. i’m not here to diagnose but i don’t want to immediately jump aboard the privilege train either- mental illness sadly isnt pay to win. TLDR; i don’t think this guy is really hurting anyone, i’m completely seriously when i say i think this is a form of coping mechanism for anxiety or something idk maybe i’m reading too much into it

0:58 Anticipatory anxiety describes a fear and worry around bad things (be them real or imagined) that could happen. It can happen in a lot of different contexts, but it commonly focuses on things you can’t predict or control. For individuals that experience Anticipatory Anxiety, his “weird” habit is actually a recommended coping technique. The act of listing out the “problem”, then trying to come up with solutions to solve them helps to disempower the feelings or sense of being out of control.

Love how you can point out how funny/ridiculous this is without being mean to the guy lol, he strikes me as someone who might be neurodivergent and just REALLY into podcasts. His advice just instantly makes sense when you think that it may be coming from someone on the spectrum. I'm thinking maybe faking it is just a way to make it a highly controlled setting where nothing can go wrong, because anyone can just make an actual podcast even if just by themselves so why would you fake it? Checking out his website/youtube channel, I don't see him selling anything and the comments seem a lot more positive than on IG, seems like my dude's doing pretty well, just a bit.. unique.

Those things aren't necessarily negative for everybody though. They're negative for me (and a lot of people in this community, it seems! kinda nice to see) because I have an anxiety disorder. People who don't have anxiety disorders actually are capable of planning for the future without spiraling and assessing themselves/their actions without excessive self-criticism. That's not actually a normal way to view the world - the worst part about anxiety and depression is that they really do convince you that it's the only possible way to experience the world.
