The Pros and Cons of a Carnivore Diet | Should You Try it and Is It Sustainable?

Pros of The Carnivore Diet
The number one thing is I’ve killed my sugar cravings. This is something I’ve struggled with for years, sometimes doing better than others.
My tool of choice for this has been raw dairy and the REBEL brand of keto ice cream. That stuff helped for sure and prevented me from grabbing a tub of organic vanilla ice cream, which was usually my cheat of choice.
Number 2 benefit is a reduced appetite in general.
I”be been utilizing intermittent fasting for over 3 years now, so my appetite has already been pretty balanced and solid for awhile now.;
I was genuinely surprised going carnivore how I could reach another level of appetite reduction.
Number 3 pro of a carnivore diet:
I usually break my fast with a grass-fed ribeye or strip steak covered in butter and wild pink salt.
I have dialed in this cooking technique to the point where i cook my steaks perfectly medium rare every time. In fact, I just launched the first carnivore cooking video on how to cook a steak perfectly every time right here.
MY second meal is usually some ground meat, some raw foods like raw egg yolk, maybe some canned or frozen fish, sardines, oysters, clams, and some raw dairy usually.
The simplicity of my meals means much less food waste since most of the foods that would go bad are from the plant kingdom. I don’t spend $ on these foods anymore and almost no food I make goes to waste. (It’s something like 50% of the food in this country is wasted, and nearly all of it is from the plant kingdom.)
Finally, then last benefit is helped by the first three: I’ve reduced my eating out at restaurants to once or twice a week, usually chipotle. And even that doesn’t sound that good to me anymore since I’m so used to breaking my fast with a juicy steak. It just cant compete.
In fact, the only meal at a restaurant that can compare is usually expensive since it’s going to be a steakhouse. Every other restaurant isn’t going to have the same quality of meat available and it doesn’t taste as good as result. So in a way, carnivore hasn't ruined most restaurants for me, but I’m thrilled about that considering i used to waste way too much money and time eating out.
Fat loss: I took a before picture just in case here. And just today decided to do an after. I still have 60 more days until I get as lean as I think I can, but this progress without really trying, is great.
I feel lighter and stronger too; i dropped to floor other day and did 20 strict pushups in one quick set. Now that’s not that impressive as its something I’ve been able to do, but the speed and then ack of fatigue I hit at about rep 15 is what surprised me. Normally I’d slow down a bit at maybe rep 10-12, but that slowing didn’t come until about 15-16 rep and then rep 20 wasn’t nearly as close to failure as it would have been before.
Gut
This one is likely connected to a range of issues I’ve faced these past 3 months. One was cedar fevers, which flares up every year in Texas and was particularly bad this year. Had to get some steroids to help within this one this year.
We also moved to 10 acres in the country and we literally have cedar trees on my property. So that wasn’t helping.
Since then, I’ve been more susceptible to feeling weak/tired and getting short bouts of the common cold. I know this is connected to my depleted gut flora from that 2 week period of time recovering from throwing up everything.
So I’m currently working on a gut restore program, and plan to record a video on things I learn and my tools for that. Stay tuned for that.
Some of the benefits could be also be partially on a CON list depending on yourself. Maybe you enjoy eating out with friends a lot, and going carnivore makes things a bit harder eat out. While i think that’s def a pro since you could just fast or just eat a simple meal, like a burger patty, which will save you money and save your health, for you it might be a it more of a con.
Regarding $: if you were eating low quality, cheap foods before, which I wasn’t, then you might need to spend a bit more. This can be accomplished easily at places like costco where you can buy grass-fed ground beef for a reasonable price in bulk as well as seafood and other reasonable quality animal-based foods.
I also think you save a lot by removing the food waste, which is something i see nearly everyone do when they are buying a lot of plant foods.

biggest pro is good digestion, no farting and bloating after eating, that alone for me is reason enough.

I was vegan for 2 years, got super skinny and gave up on the diet. Had 2 months of eating whatever but I couldnt gain the weigt back so I went carnivore. It's been a year since then and I've gained 25 lbs, only muscle, and 0 fat. Eating is super simple, filling, I'm forced to cook which I've gotten way better at b/c of, and delicious. I think it's worth it to go out of your way for raw dairy if you can. If you're not getting your meat directly from a farm though I couldn't recommend carnivore, feedlot beef is dangerous compared to pastured. I don't even really have to think about what I'm eating in a day either, it's really easy, while I was vegan I always obsessed with food, always stuffing myself, and always starving. Carnivore is such a calm, steady ride in comparison. If you crave sugar mix some raw(!!!) honey with raw cream and you'll just get shredded and feel great.

I agree with you on the raw dairy. At least for variety, if nothing else. I also think raw cheese is probably a hidden superfood that has been demonized for the wrong reasons. That's great.. glad to hear it!

Hi. Just found your channel. Thanks for this video - great content. I was eating plant based most of my life based on preference- tried keto and then went carnivore for the last 10 months (for weight, digestive and health issues). I found everything you said in this video to be ‘spot on’. I have also found that I prefer not to eat out at all for same reasons- I have become so used to eating pure food that I don’t want to risk digestive upset with ‘mystery’ substances- even if the intent is for culinary artistry. I’d rather eat simple, nutritious food and use the resulting immense energy to find adventure and artistry elsewhere in life.

Yes exactly. I feel like it's the perfect way to keep oneself in check. Not to mention the amount of $ im saving by not eating out.

Here is the thing... I have been 95% Carnivore for 16 months now... I am obese... I did not lose any weight at all... The diarrhea did not stop at all & it has been really bad especially if I have steak.... Every person is an individual and what works for one does not work for another. I am determined to continue though, and right now I am water-fasting but after this I will go 100% strict carnivore without any Dairy. For my body, maybe it will be better without any dairy at all even though I was not having much up to now. The pros for me have been... bleeding gums healed completely, arthritis pain went away, more energy, and hope for the future. I think the reason I have not lost weight is because of Insulin-resistance, so that is why I am back to a water-only fast again.
@titiung

There's no way you're on carnivore diet and not losing weight.
@Dakiniwoman
@Dakiniwoman 4 года назад
Quoc Bao... I don't understand it myself... but I am only 55 inches tall and 74 years old, so maybe that factors in here... I know I have insulin resistance... I keep a journal of every bite I put in my mouth and so I know what I have been eating... every person is a unique individual... It is very frustrating for me... As I mentioned, I have been 95% Carnivore and for a couple of weeks of that time I had one rib-eye steak each day that is one meal a day, and did not lose one pound... my BMI is 37, so one would think I would lose, but the only way I seem to lose is with water-only fasting for a number of days at a time.
@titiung

@@Dakiniwoman That is incredibly strange. Are you sure you're not eating any sugary food, carbs at all? Because if you're not, there's no way you have insulin resistance.

I'm lucky as a expart farmer i live in Russia. Me steaks cost around 6 euro so I spend 180 euro a month (I could go cheaper if i take steaks for meatloaf or some egg diners) plus the butter so I will come maybe on max 200 euro a month, where it could go down, i can eat once every second day than it would be half.

You probably can get quality seafood for a good price, too, no?
@JR-mv7uz
@JR-mv7uz 4 года назад
@@ColinStuckert Not really, it's there but i don't like seafood. Also i know with meat from cows her there is a change there is antibiotics in,so i'm picky which brands I use. (disclaimer this antibiotica story counts not for EU countries) All prices are not bad for me, as expat. But if I would go back to Europe I would buy whole cow and get it slaughtered and freeze it. Cow cost about 1400 euro + 400 kg meat plus about 1.7 euro a kg butcher cost, you will have meat around 5 euro a kg.

Organic grass fed beef and good cuts of steak are expensive, but I’m eating a lot less. I would easily spend $20+ on chipotle and Starbucks in the same day, and then order in at night and spend another $35.

I would venture to say that those who have been eating fairly strict ketogenic won't experience some of these gastro-intestinal side effects going into carnivore like a plant based/carb eater would. I am planning at least a one month trial of carnivore from keto (though I might keep coconut oil, spices and some natural sweeteners into it). Will start this in April.

Hi Colin, do you think people over 60 should go on the Carnivore diet? I'm in that age bracket and I heard it helps in minimizing joint pains such as arthritis. I do have some knee pains and at times my legs feel very stiff. Some of the pains were over the years of running on the road as part of my daily exercise. I've stopped running now to avoid further pain. Can you shed some light on this?

Yes. All humans. This is the closest to a natural human diet you can get. I feed my son this and my 70 year old mother eats this way too, though both eat a bit of plants/fruit here and there as well.

I think it would really depend on your system’s tolerance to plants and your health goals. Are you older, younger, athletic, overweight, etc.? Your carb/veggie meal might cause an insulin spike or accumulate phytotoxins and “undo” the benefits of the carnivore-ish way of eating. The experiment would be interesting. Take notes and let us know!
