I think the confession of how Thunder Hawk can be born in Mexico but part of a tribe native to America comes from acknowledgement of boarders. I'm sure a tribe could be in Mexico and Southern United States at the same time, since the natives predate the formation of those boarders.

As a mexican myself, this was a pleasant surprise! I visited this place years back and seeing the details of the video here is a nostalgic trip xD. Even my fgc friends from mexico have debated on where t.hawk is really from but we do consider him as indigenous mexican 🇲🇽 ^_^ Excellent Work With This Video! Hope to see more as time goes on!

T.Hawk always seemed to me that his background is in a sonoran setting, minus the out of place Guadalajaran building XD

Hmmm, in regards to T. Hawk's ancestry, I think his design is mostly just something that's stereotypically Native American (I think the "American" in Native American simply refers to the continent and not the country). What I can say regarding his conception was that he was in some form based on Geronimo, a real-life Native American and historical figure who was technically an indigenous Mexican (yes, he was an Apache and he was born in Arizona, but during his lifetime, Arizona was part of Mexico and not the U.S.), and was even planned by Capcom of Japan to be named Geronimo... until Capcom U.S.A. told them that might come off as insensitive/offensive, so they had to change the name. So, T. Hawk's kind of just a hodgepodge of different Native American influences, I think. While some of his influence is definitely more South-Western U.S., there's the technicality that the real-life person he was based on lived in that area when it was still part of Mexico. But, obviously that wouldn't be the case in the modern setting of Street Fighter. Capcom probably just didn't quite have all their facts straight. Being of both Native blood and Mexican ancestry (though from different parents), I can at least still appreciate the effort that was put in, and I do love T. Hawk as a character. Great video as usual, btw! T. Hawk in general seems to be one of the more underrated SF characters. Actually, it's kinda funny how all of the New Challengers minus Cammy seem to often get overlooked compared to the World Warriors and the Grand Masters.
@baberuthless
@baberuthless Год назад
I agree I do think T hawk and the other new challengers side from cammy do get very much overlooked. I’m glad all of them are in alpha 3 and SF4 but I dunno I don’t see the same excitement for them as I do the others.

As Mexican, I could never identify myself with T. Hawk as he looks and feels more like a Native American rather than being from a Mexican ethnic group. I guess Capcom had no idea whatsoever about Mexican cultures (also that's the reason I can't relate Lily as one of us either). However, the stage was pretty accurate in a lot of things (although I'm positive there's no wet market in Hospicio Cabañas). Place is quite nice and yeah, Hospicio Cabañas is gorgeous.

Great video as always! Super engaging and easy to watch. I, and I think most SSF2X players, have a bit of a love-hate thing with Hawk's stage. To me, Hawk's stage is the sound of the arcade. Since basically nobody plays Hawk, the machines almost always inevitably end up stuck on his stage after every other character has been played. So it inadvertently has that emotional connection of hearing his theme upon arrival off in the distance and feeling the excitement of the hours of offline fun that await. But since his stage is so bright and monochrome, however, it can be pretty unpleasant to play on for long periods of time!

i always imagined T. Hawk was a plains indian (some examples being the sioux, pawnee, and blackfeet) due to the tipis in his usf4 story intro. his headband with a single feather in it would suggest eastern woodlands though. so to be honest it was probably capcom throwing in a bunch of native american stereotypes. but in my mind, hes indigenous american, but he had to relocate to mexico. The thunderfoot tribe still lives there as of SF6 , with Lily described as a mexican of thunderfoot descent, and her stage being full of decorated mobile homes.

I never considered the possibility that T. Hawk's stage was an IRL place in Mexico. And right there in the middle of Guadalajara! I was thinking it would be in central or north-central Mexico. 6:55 The instruments that make up a Mariachi band! Makes perfect sense. May I make a suggestion? For the sake of consistancy, I suggest adding "Stage Breakdown" or "Stage(s) Explained" to the titles of all your vids. This vid, for example, you can keep the "The real life location..." on it as a sort-of tagline to draw people in, just so long as "Stage Breakdown" or "Stage(s) Explained" remains in the title. I dunno if I'm just being nitpicky, but it's just nice to know what to expect.

There's an indigenous tribe that resides in the mexicali Valley and the close to the death Valley in California, not too far from the Sonoran desert known as the Cocopah (Cucapá). Since I grew up in that part of Mexico I assumed that it T. Hawk was alluding to these groups. Another group of indigenous people to consider, might be the Yaqui, from central/ southern Sonora in Mexico. Hope this helps to illustrate the social landscape and the connections with this awesome character.

Btw the name T. Hawk might also have originated from a Mexican Catholic Legend about a native who's name was Tizoc (if you know Garou Mark of the wolves, this is where the name comes from) I always though that the name T. Hawk was very close in pronounciation to the name Tizoc

5:53 Sony Handycams like the model CCD-TR91 already exist in the year 1993, so a tourist wouldn't be using a shoulder mounted video camera to take home videos and the camera held by the guy in the HD Remix version of the background at 5:42 isn't anachronistic.

If I had to explain T. Hawk's...poorly researched depiction I'd say he IS part of a Mexican indigenous tribe, but he dresses as a different kind of Native group as a costume? Like, that's his wrestling persona, so to speak. Maybe he's like "I made this stereotypical Injun disguise because Shadaloo would absolutely spot me as one of the guys bent on revenge they created. Plus, you guys couldn't tell an Apache from a Guayupe anyway, so that's how I make my money at whatever performance type job I do." I mean ideally next time we see T. Hawk they'd have a more accurate costume, and it seems they're moving that way from that with Lily so we're probably not gonna see some kind of T. Hawk revamp anytime soon anyway. But that's how I'd do that.

I don’t know if you’ve heard about American filibustering (the military term not the political term). I’m probably gonna describe this poorly cuz I’m doing it from a distant memory but during and after the Civil War they had guys on both sides basically running Native Americans over the Mexican border to basically destabilize and hunt them down. I could be wrong but as a result of all this chaos, I believe there are patches of Apache and other tribes with land in Mexico as a result of the chaos from this. It’s actually a big part of the plot of Cormac Macarthy’s Blood Meridian. That’s why I never questioned T. Hawk’s origin. lol
@baberuthless
@baberuthless 11 месяцев назад
That seems to mirror Thawks origin in a way as well. Which now knowing what you said is kind of in poor taste. Since capcom are weirdly recognizing that horrible event in history but instead replacing America with Shadowloo.

I wonder how and why Capcom decided on that location for the stage. I'm from the north of Mexico and I would have never known that hospicio cabañas place if not for this game, it is not that well known nation-wide. Also, if T. Hawk is from Sonora, why not make his stage in Sonora? It's weird. Speaking for myself, I don't consider him mexican, he looks too much like a native american. I also don't really like El Fuerte or Lily, so I'll keep waiting for a respectable mexican street fighter
