Seth, just wanted to let you know I made it through the Disney half. It was the worst time I have ever had doing a half, but the most gratifying considering I am almost 6 months from the day for being diagnosed with throat cancer. Thanks for the shout out last week and all the support. Love the channel and DGR community.

Another tip: I cinch the runner’s knot with my foot flexed rather than pointed. I have found if my foot isn’t flexed (foot and leg at 90 degrees) then it is a bit too tight when running.

Yep, I even give a little knee over toes to give me a little extra space. I also pull my laces a little through the arch to snug that up first.

Wow!!! I never knew this. I told myself, today I'm going to learn something new, and here's Seth giving us golden info early in the morning. Thank you! QD: I always use one simple, bunny ears knot and hope for the best. Always wondered why that extra hole was for.

Hey Seth, I use the runners knot but to make it extra secure I double wrap the laces before the bunnies ears, I learnt it from a military guy , it will secure the laces whilst you make the ears!

i just use a regular knot, tied once and have only had my laces come loose once in fifty years of running. i do however tuck the 'bunny ears' under one of the crossovers further down the eyelit chain so there's less laces flapping around and, if out on trails, less chance of them getting snagged on something.

I appreciate the attention that you're bringing to lacing up your running shoes. The runners knot doesn't work for me because I have extremely high arches and any extra pressure on the top of my foot in the wrong spot makes my toes go numb. BUT I've had to figure out what does work for me - skipping a lace crossover on the top of my foot. Looks weird but works and increased the number of shoes I am able to wear!

The runner’s knot has changed for the better how my shoes perform. A big difference. I have wide feet and I am always struggling for slack to tie my shoes after doing the runner’s knot.
@JohnnyG734

I use a modified runner's knot! My instep is thick so there is a lot of pressure on the top of my ankle with a standard runner's knot, so Instead of using the "runner's knot loop" at the topmost part of both sides of the eyelet chain, I use it at the topmost part on the outside, but do the runner's loop on the normal part of the eyelet chain on the inside so that it doesn't cross over my ankle :)

QD: I don’t use the runners knot…pretty much never. Regular lacing up with just enough tension/squeeze works fine for me for all types of runs. I noticed if I try the runners knot a lot of times I get pain around my ankle or top of it. I’m sure running gait pattern as well as foot shape plays a roll if it works or not. But I’m always here to learn something new! 😊

My shoelace tip is to double-triple twirl the laces before knotting. Makes the laces lay flatter in the foot with less of a pressure point on the very top of the foot. I use a runner’s knot but it doesn’t work with feet on some shoes. I believe the pegasus 37 I did runners knot on my left but regular on my right.

Very good running knot Seth, I've been using the runners knot for years, since I felt like I needed more lock feel on the heel counter, as I started to run faster and faster, a prefer a more snug lock. Gonna use your runners knot supreme a few interval reps to try it out, take care buddy

QD: I am VERY particular about tying my shoes. I almost always double knot, unless the laces aren’t long enough (like with my Rincon 3, but they always stay tied). I always use a runner’s knot for fast workouts and races, and I use one most of the time for daily runs, but not always. Some shoes fit so well that I don’t need to, and some don’t. Most importantly, I pull the laces tight systematically from the bottom up. Not so tight where my feet get no blood flow, but fairly tight, then when I’m finished with my run, I loosen them up in the same way from the top down. Wash, rinse, repeat!
@ForwardLooking832
@ForwardLooking832 2 года назад
I have high arch feet which means cinching anything down across the top of my feet impacts the nerves to my toes when my feet swell. Its so painful. I often have to lace up using techniques that hikers use and skip lacing the eyelets in the middle. This does mean the foot is not as secure around the middle, but its the only way I have found to minimize the problem. For me, a shoe that has a good soft padded tongue is important, and not tying too tightly around the cuff.

I still have to tuck the lace loops under the front lace as Hoka tends to have extra long laces.

First time I used the Runner’s knot I tightened the top to much and started to cause some tendon issue on the top of my foot. However, I was able to loosen it and get it correct a few runs later and every shoe of mine is using this knot. I tried one day to not do it and I noticed a lot of heel slipping. Overall it’s just amazing what one more crossover does for a shoe. Have a phenomenal day!

I can't use the runners knot. The shape of my foot does not allow it, but have never had a problem with slippage through the heel. I always double knot my laces regardless of distance or pace. Have to say.... gonna try the surgeons knot next time.

I’ve been doing the runner’s loop with my VF ever since and yes, no heel slippage. However, on my last run wearing the cielo x1 with the ugly laces, doing the runner’s loop made the top part of my foot, where I do tying the laces, painful. Maybe a bit too tight? How do I go with preventing possible heel slippage and not making the top of the foot painful without doing the loop tightly?! Is there any other way to tie the laces to prevent heel slippage?

Sadly I have a really high instep which means the laces are too short for a runners knot on 90% of my shoes. Hoka seem to provide the longest laces, with my Nike, Adidas, Saucony, Asics and New Balance shoes I wasn't able to do it and still comfortable tie them.

I tie my shoes with my got flexed (toes pulled back towards my knee) as it keeps my laces from digging into the top of my foot. My quirkiest lacing situation is with my Saucony Endorphin Speeds: I only runners knot the right shoe, and on the left I do a normal shoe knot. Feet are all different.
@brandonatkins1300

Runners knot is critical for me. My right foot is longer but has less volume. Besides rubbing, a slipping heel fails to keep the shoe adhered to my foot, and the shoe doesn’t flex. That causes a bunch of other issues.

No runners knot for me. Often use the extra loop though, depending on the shoe. I think I tend to prefer a smaller fitting shoe than most and probably means the naturally a tighter fit. Also I tend not to have much heel slippage. This will be a useful vid for runners who dont know it yet !!

I just do normal double knots 99% of the time and I've been fine but the Saucony Speed 2s are the first shoe I've experienced heal movement and it creates a hot spot at about 7kms (so I haven't taken them past 10) but the laces are too short to do the runners knot... What do you recommend? (aside from change the laces which is something I'll look at)

QD: Tight but not too tight. Maybe a little tighter on fast days. If it's Nike then probably double knot since those just seem to come undone more than other brands. I'll try your runners knot with my Nike Zoom Fly 5's. The original shoe laces are total failure. It's unbelievable how could Nike sell running shoes with laces like that. On the other end there are the shoe laces of the Asics Nimbus. I tie them only with a single knot and they never loosen up.

Seth, I can assure you that the double knot on race day is not necessary. The whole point of the runner's knot is that it provides the security of a double knot and the simplicity of being able to be untied with a single pull. Interestingly, I tie it differently from you although we end up with the same knot! I learned it from The Klutz Book of Knots over two decades ago.

Hi Seth, thank you for your insightful videos. I use the runner's knot in most of my shoes. I read some comments below that doing the runner's knot gives them some pain or discomfort in the instep of foot (top/front of the foot slightly below the ankle). This is due to the tension in one area caused by the multiple laces merging together after cinching them down and lacing them up. This is case to case though based on the shoe's eyelet configurations and height of the shoe collar. It's all about experimenting which one works best. One way of doing it is to skip one eyelet - you leave the 2nd to the last eyelet when you make the loop/anchor. Hope this helps. Cheers to you and your family, Seth. Be safe and well.

QD: Plain old double knot. I don't use the top eyelets on most shoes. I used the runners knot for a number of years but found it bothered the tendons in that front ankle area under the laces. Overly tight shoes can cause running problems as well, so I aim to stay a little loose.

This was such an excellent and clear explanation of the various options related to the runner’s knot. I tried the standard runner’s know back when you published your last vlog about it but then went back to traditional lacing. I probably didn’t take enough time to dial in the pressure throughout the lacing system. However, I find that my feet swell enough during longer runs (especially in warm weather) that I sometimes have to stop and readjust so the runner’s know might be too precise to allow me that flexibility and ease in doing so. I always double knot for races, and generally feel that if a shoe has heel slippage, it’s not a good fit for me so I simply don’t buy it. Martha

QD: I do the runners knot also. But I have funky feet and recently I’ve had to relace my left shoe, skipping two eyelets towards the top of my metatarsals, because that foot has developed a “knot” of its own. Relacing has relieved pressure on that spot which is very tender and shows up from time to time. Anyone else get a swollen muscle on the top on their feet the size of a golf ball? Any tips to prevent? I’ve just done the relacing and I smother the spot in tigers balm at night. This seems to clear it up in a day or two whenever it appears, but I’m not sure what’s causing it and it’s very painful for the first day or 2 whenever it comes back.

I started tying the runners knot a little over a year ago after watching a bunch of your videos and noticing how you were tying them. This is an excellent video that deserves to be shared to everyone’s running friends. I’d say most of my shoes are regular laced and tied, because that’s what feels comfortable to me for most of my runs, but pretty much every racing shoe is runners knotted, or if I’m doing tempo or speed workouts. That being said, 2 of my favorite shoes don’t have the ability to runners knot. Nike Infinity FK1 and Nike Epic React FK2…

Seth... interesting question. Has there ever been a running shoe with zips, Velcro or BOA lacing (like in cycling shoes) instead of the traditional laces ? I’ve been running for 20 years and I’ve never seen any. Gary, Pakistan.

I use them plastic Toggle Cylinder Cord Locks / End Spring Stoppers to tie my shoes. This enables me to quickly adjust if necessary (very long run when my feet got a bit swollen). I just pull both laces thru and then tie up those loose endings at the bottom of the eyelid chain (tie against the first crossover of laces). This also enable to fast taking shoe off if some pebble got in during the run etc. Cheers DGR

Been using the runner's knot with a simple, finishing, double knot since 1993, never ONCE have the shoelaces failed me or come undone. "Same as it ever was." _ Talking Heads

I can remember having a shoe sucked off on our notoriously muddy h.s. x- c course and running in 1 shoe to finish the race. Our coach use to make us athletic tape around our shoes and laces to keep them on!! I've used the runners knot for the last 17 years. Can't tell you how many people I've showed what that 2nd hole is for!

QD - I have skinny heels, to prevent slippage back there, I use the ‘runners knot’ always. With the ‘quick laces’ on some Salomon shoes, I can get a decent to pretty-ok lockdown. Road running and trail running with laces, I use this knot exclusively.

I always use the runners knot and double knot, I try to position my tongue straight, I even try to prevent flat laces from twisting so they lat flat as a pancake above my foot. I also engage my foot a little bit before tying up to prevent aching and allow the foot to swell, critical especially in ultra running. GREETINGS FROM SALZBURG/AUSTRIA!!!

I have been using the runners knot plus the surgical knot (I never knew it was called that, I learned it from someone somewhere) since 2014 and I have never ever had my shoelace come undone. It is the only knot I have experienced that does not come undone. Fully recommend it.

I'm glad you mentioned it takes some time to dial in the fit. While the original runner's knot changed how I lace up, I've found particularly on a couple races, I cinched down too tight, causing foot soreness not only during the race but quite a few days after! You live, you learn. Gotta try that "Supreme" method! Thanks!

The Surgical Knot is brilliant! Thanks for the tip. One thing that I always do is tuck the bunny ears under the laces. Since doing this, over 12 years ago, I’ve never had an issue where my laces come untied. Under one or two cross overs is fine! If for some freak reason, I need to retie in the middle a race, I’m not at the mercy of having to struggle to get a double knot undone.

The only time I've stopped to retie my shoes during a race was when my feet got swollen towards the end of a marathon and the pain on top of my foot became unbearable. The runner's knot really would not have helped at the point. I do always double knot my shoe; I've tried the runner's knot but do not use it because it puts to much pressure across the top of my foot.

QD: as the top part of my foot has a high volume, i don’t need to use that extra eyelit hole with exception of the Clifton 6 where had to go with runners knot. Always doubling the knot as otherwise the knot un-ties itself during the run!

QoD: I now runners knot since your last video on runners knot, but I previously simply single tied my shoes and it was pretty successful. Since transitioning I went too tight early on, but have now got it down 👍🏻

Just tried the "Runners Knot" Seth. I'm amazed at how much more secure my trainers now feel on my feet! Amazing, thanks from Wales.

Works for me. Going to check it out with this lacing on one shoe during tomorrow's run on Gel-Nimbus 23.
