Aye between 2015-2018, several members of OF dropped amazing genre pushing albums 2015: The Internet - Ego Death 2016: Frank Ocean - Blonde 2017: Tyler the Creator - Flower Boy 2018: Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs Incredible to see in succession, this group was not meant to stay a group. They were all creatives who wanted to do something different with their craft. They managed to supersede OF to become staples & stars in their own right. I still don’t understand why Hodgy wasn’t/couldn’t as big as Earl at least. He had the look, personality, style, and was positioned as Tyler’s right hand man when Earl went away. Was he the most supreme lyricist? No, but his work ethic (he had the most material and features out of the crew) along with him getting all his beats from Left Brain made him have a unique sound, which no one, not even dudes in OF had. It’s very clear that once Earl came home all the promo and attention went towards him which makes sense but I still feel like Hodgy could’ve been more. I mean do I see him being the superstar that Tyler is or the undergoing legend that Earl has shaped into? No, but I defiantly feel like he could’ve occupied that middle of the road lane like Vince Staples does now.

Lol Frank has been bigger than Tyler for years while literally doing no interviews, no social media, hiding in the shadows. Tyler's only more relevant now since Frank hasn't dropped in 6 years and he still only recently overtook him lmao. Tyler only has 5 mil more monthly listeners with 3 albums out since Frank dropped music. Like what are we talking about here? If he put out an album tomorrow, people will be flocking back to the ocean don't get it twisted. The personality is good but great music is great music.

I saw odd future back in June 2015 at the old national centre in Indy called the Egyptian room. I remember the mens bathroom smelling like weed, the chaotic mosh pit, having a black girl grind up against me thinking I was someone else, and buying a purple OF hat with a green brim also keeping the original concert ticket. Odd Future never fully died cause the influence in the music industry is still there and felt to this day. If you were around bumping to them in the early and mid 2010s in high school it was a special kind of vibe.

I was only 13 when I discovered OF. I was totally floored. I'll keep it a buck tho, I had been through a lot by this point (including SA) and I adored Tyler and OF's music because I was an angry, hurt little edgelord who wanted to rip shit up. I never read Tyler's lyrics as problematic or malicious, because I held deep resentment towards what my little brain understood as "the mainstream". I admired him for being such a goon while being so visible, and I also leaned into my darker inclinations in my own art. With that being said, the timeline of my growth as a person weirdly aligns with T's growth as an artist, and I've only fallen in love with his art more and more as time passes by. I don't listen to old Tyler or OF anymore, but that time of my life will always have such a soft spot in my heart and I will always be grateful for what their work gave me at that time.

Weird to call it a “death”… it just ran its course. As far as groups go, they had a good run. Tyler seems to have always been in a tough spot, but I think he handled all his relationships well. Specifically, I loved seeing how he supported Frank Ocean through him coming out and with him being MIA. Every group has a “Beyoncé”, but to have 3 Beyoncés simultaneously was pretty dope - it gave everyone else a bigger wave to ride. Definitely an era that earned a slot in the hip hop textbooks.

Yassine I got a question. using Odd Future as a "case study" what would be your overall takeaway about them and your views on collectives overall? Do you think they're usually doomed from the start? Do you think that managers (like Chris Clancy) pick a favorite member knowing that he has the most market value and probability of being a star? (In this case: Tyler). Which results in more time & resources being put into him? Just curious about your thoughts.

I don't see how Odd Future's death was "sad". The majority of them all went on to do bigger and better things. Odd Future was just a stepping stone for them. The members were so stylistically different that a split was inevitable. It was a great way for all of them to get notoriety and build a fanbase. They didn't need Odd Future anymore and had grown out of it.
