Today, we're going to take a look at a very interesting little watch, with a taste of the past, and a fair bit of modern style. Thanks to Lewis Jewelers in Ann Arbor, MI, (www.lewisjewelers.com/) for loaning the review sample along.
Great review, fantastic watch! I just got mine last week and can honestly say it looks even better in person, keeps perfect time and feels good on my 7.25” wrist. Very pleased, worth every penny! Thanks Nick!
I absolutely love my Seikos but I'm really glad to hear you calling them out on a few of their issues. For their price point, they could certainly do better. I'll probably keep buying regardless tho...
Just so people know I got this watch about a month ago. I paid $1000 AUD (about $680 USD) brand new. Mine does not have the alignment problem at all its all perfectly centred. Mine is also very accurate about +3 sec a day. I also own the Seiko SSA363J1 and that is around +/- 5-9 sec day. They're not as bad as Seiko says. I'm guessing they're just covering their ass with those numbers, not sure. But very happy with mine. It wears more like a 41mm. I used to own a Sub no date but grew increasingly tired of the whole Rolex thing so ended up with this instead and honestly this brings me more joy than the Sub at about 1/12th the cost. Cheers guys.
Loved the review. Especially the fact that you keep wiping off the fingerprints regularly to keep the watch shining throughout the video. Kudos to that. Thank you for this review, it helped me to finalize & place order for this watch, should be getting it soon. 🙂
Our first year at University I got a Bulova auto divers, and my buddy got the Seiko dive watch. We both lost them over the years. Wish I had that back...
How is the crown action, any wobble? Also how is the threads of the case tube, are they thick threads or thin fine threads? Does the diasheild really resist scratches or just Marketting?
For that money, I'd recommend the Shogun in titanium. So light to wear and in my view better aesthetics. But so many excellent points Nick, Seiko need to listen to you and their other customers; tighten the timing with better regulation from the factory, screws not pins, better bezel alignment on some models and if Steinhart can do all of that regularly for half the price, why can't Seiko?
Excitingly awaiting the tudor pelagos review. I am particularly interested in how well tudor does with the details, like hour marker alignment. I returned a tudor recently for having rather noticeably misaligned hour markers. Not acceptable for the price. I want to buy a pelagos but don't know if I trust tudor now.
i think you pretty much nailed it on this one. it's a very very nice tool watch that is very tool-looking but with some added flair, but the problems it has are too big and can't be ignored (bracelet, movement and price...) i mean, in that price range you can get an Orion or Tourby diver, both of which are better proportioned (the Orion is insanely thin for such a watch... and it has a display back!), have superior movements, and MUCH better bracelets. or if you don't mind going pre-owned (i know, apples and oranges), you can find some of the previous gen Seamasters and sometimes even the Monta Oceanking, both of which blow this Seiko out of the water, by a margin much much greater than the price difference which is a shame, 'cause i really really like this "renewed vintage tool watch" look, with that little bit of extra visual flair :/ Seiko really seems on a steady decline these past few years, ridiculously overcharging for underperforming watches, and discontinuing the great valued superstars that made Seiko what it is. sad :(
Diameter is fine, it's the lug to lug distance that is the problem. Plus, the end link on the case doesn't fold flat against the case back so it effectively makes the lug to lug distance even greater.
FYI the 6r is way more accurate than what Seiko has stated . I own them so I know even the 4r movement watches are for the money are crazy accurate don't knock until you've tried them
Great video and agree about the braclet more so the clasp, the braclet i didnt fine to be that bad or offensive still i bought one and absolutely love it....photos and video doesn't do it justice....and I have no issue with any alignment.
Good review. I think it is priced right for what it is. Comparing the deficiencies of the bracelet with the pelagos is unfair. The pelagos can't be had for a 1000 usd. I'd be curious what other manufactured watch offers more than this for a grand. And I'm not talking assembled microbrand stuff either. That's unfair. Manufacturer vs manufacturer.
I found this watch uncomfortable on the silicone strap. The top is huge, but the part that actually sits on your wrist is very narrow due to the case design so the watch would always tilt on its sides on my wrist because it wasn’t sitting flat.
Is it worth buying spb077 prospex? What’s the daily accuracy of the watch?can this watch fit in small size wrist and any issues problems while using the watch?
"I don't need cosc spec I just need +5 -5".... Cosc spec is -4 +6 I'd say if it were -+12 seconds a day that would be more acceptable and more comparable to it's ETA based swiss alternatives
I sold my 143J and purchased the 077J and I’m happier with the 077J. Bezel action is nicer, I like the larger diameter, the indices are nicer imo, I prefer the crown at 4, the chamfering on case is very high quality, the lume is wayy brighter. The 077J is extremely accurate. The 143J was losing 15-20/day. My 077 loses about 2 secs on wrist but gains 2-3 seconds overnight so i can regulate it perfectly. Only thing I dont like over the 143 is the lug to lug is a bit long and I have a smaller wrist but I’m not a small guy so it balances decently. I have it on a waffle style strap.
@@jaycamacho8179 Not a fan of the 6159 styling. Much prefer the 62MAS style case of the 143. Also, way too large for me. The 143 is similar in size to my 126610. Easy to wear and not extremely heavy. Good lug to lug and comfortable. Glad you like the 077 tho.
Fair enough, and thanks for the review of this watch which has some interest to me. But your logic of one statement is confusing me.You say you don't need COSC spec, you just need +5, -5.... So you need it in a range of 10 seconds per day. But COSC spec is -4 to +6 seconds per day, or a range of 10 seconds. So, for most intents, you are saying that you do need COSC spec, aren't you?
It sounds to me you're comparing this 1k Seiko Sumo to your 4k Tudor Pelagos, which seems a bit unfair...and FYI, I've seen this watch online for less than $ 600 and the Seiko 6R15 movement often keeps time within COSC specs (my Samurai 200m Automatic, with a 6R15, keeps 2 seconds per day).
Seiko has been trying to upscale the price of their entire mid-range line to ridiculous levels this year and it's going to come back and bite them in ass big time.
Sorry to bring it to your attention, but the watch suffers from Seiko's biggest problem - misaligned hour and minutes chapter ring markers. Mostly visible at 12 and 6 o'clock markers :(
I hear you for sure, most watch nuts are so OCD they're CDO. I actually read your comment before watching, so I was on alert and paused the video when Nick's almost reflection was centered, and at that point the chapter ring looks pretty good. The minute hand... meh.
Yeah I’ll stick to my Casio Oceanus, which has significantly better finishing. You can do much better for 500-1000. If people insist on automatic in this range I guess you get what you pay for, which is really not much.
Shame on Seiko for their pricing, in Australia this retailed for $1600 3 years ago. Today May 2022 $680. A poor watch for the price, and you should have some credibility and let people know this is a flawed watch for the price.
In the purest form of Capitalism, Seiko is winning, as their watches seem to be selling very well. However, for ME, the last 10 years or so, Seiko seems to be (over) charging top dollar for very "Okayish" features/quality. The bracelet looks cheap as hell for the price point. I am disappointed that it's not a high beat movement and someone else pointed out something that I'm surprised I did not notice........the second hand is way too thin. It does not look right (to me). At $1,000 (or thereabouts), I'll go for a microbrand, or add a few coins and go with Oris or Sinn.
Seiko is a bit lost, but hopefully they will figure out how to make a 40mm dive watch with a modern bracelet. And yeah, $1k for a 6R15 movement is ridiculous.
Just bought this watch as new in Italy . Just seen this review i must say the issues he talk about is stupid. He talk about accurracy and Seiko’ way to tell that in specs. This watch promise more than Seiko tell. I It’s fantastic !!! I have changed the Seiko brachelet which is very good. But my heart beats for strapcode brachelets which bring this watch up to world class.
The hands on this one are just ugly. It's clear they just took these from their spare parts box as the design doesn't work. Also, why the hell they are colored in silver and not brushed? it doesn't work with the indices. Had the 053 for 1 month and sold it as couldn't look at it..
I'm going to say it. As a man of "lighter build" (Part Indonesian) it really pisses me off that watches are continuously getting larger. The sweet spot for me is at 36 to 38mm. But even the luxury watches that used to come out at around 36mm (think Rolex Datejust for example) are now coming out at 41mm. It seems the entire watch industry is being adapted to fit the wrists of fat Americans "not calling nick fat by the way" (pardon my French). Very irritating.
Get the orient Mako. It is 41 mm. Or the Seiko Mini Turtle. Or the SKX013. Or the Oris 68. Or the Omega Planet Ocean 38mm. The seiko apocalypse and seiko turtle came out originally in 44 mm sizes. I don't know why you're saying this is a trend in dive watches today.
True dat. But just buy a cheaper seiko monster and get a timegrapher - both for less than $400. Calibrate your 6r15 to as accurate as you desire. Got mine to less than +15 secs a month after a few tries.
Well, my Seikos are actually surprisingly accurate. Almost all of them are in the +/- 5 sec range :о. They are all made in 2017 or 2018 if that matters
Ed Loki But shouldn't they have done that straight from the factory instead of you having to do it yourself? I have NH35 movements running + 5 seconds a day as the brand did regulated the movement before shipping the watch. The same with my two Borealis watches, both came regulated from Borealis and their Japanese movement of choice on mine is the Miyota 9015 4HZ and it comes in at around - 4 in the winder and + 3 to 5 on wrist, depending on what I am doing. Don't get me wrong, I love Seiko, but my Alpinist runs better than this reissue, don't know if the Alpinist is regulated, but it runs after everything is worn in, around + 4 a day on wrist and - 6 in the winder.
