You guys keep presenting just two options, that it was Ippei stealing or Shohei gambling. I think option3 is the most likely, Ippei gambled, but Shohei covered for him, not knowing that in and of itself was illegal. And that's why the lawyers are stepping in. That's not as clickbaity of a theory though.

I have worked in accounting and finance for decades and it was shocking to see how easily employees and associates stole from wealthy people or businesses. I have seen fraudulent wire transfers, fabricated checks, forged checks, etc. With that said, all these angles seem very plausible. Also, it is impossible to cover this up at this point bc you have various LE agencies involved, a financial trail, and the actual bookie's identity. You're also going to have a hoard of investigative journalists digging ... the truth will come out.

One comment about the IG Wife announcement, it’s actually very common for famous Japanese people to announce marriages that way. It’s often a sudden text post with an apology lol, very Japanese. if the other person is not a public figure they may never even be named by the mainstream media.
@mikayocc

The Japanese media are also terrifyingly intrusive; they would 've hunted down his wife's family, co-workers, college friends, etc. Shohei, basically being the most famous person in Japan, wanted to protect her identity before he married her. It feels like one massive thing that people are not factoring in here is just how insane addiction can be. Like it can turn you into an actually insane person. The turnaround between the 90-minute interview and the next day "that was all lies and now I'm ready to face all consequences" thing seems crazy, but also completely in line with how an addict thinks and operates. The old adage is "an addict will steal your wallet and then help you look for it." When an addict gets caught, they only tell the minimum level of truth they think they need to and surround it with lies, trying to save as much face as possible.

Im just surprised no one has comment on shohei's reputation as someone who DOES NOT care about money. All the past talk about him sending almost all his money back home, and living on quite a merger allowance, especially for a superstar. Yeah, he signed the biggest contract ever, but he is on record saying something to the effect of, I wish I could just defer every dollar. He's effectively playing for 1 mil a year and retiring on 70 mil a year for 10 years

That’s why I’m willing to go out on such a limb, beyond just being a dodgers fan. There is real reason to think ohtani is an honest hardworking person that wouldn’t get caught up in this kind of thing. Ippei? Not so much, he’s much more of an unknown quantity. I think it’s quite likely that he lied/manipulated his way into the interpreter role by making up working with the Red Sox for example, and he leveraged that position as an interpreter into becoming much more than just that over time. This could just be a web of lies finally crashing down. It doesn’t even have to be the most malicious planned out thing in the world, just someone wanting to be close to power and then trying to use that to his benefit to fund his gambling addiction. But it’s not that he necessarily planned from the beginning to steal millions from ohtani.

Exactly, "normal" means "non-celebrity" in Japanese media, and there are rules as to what Japanese media can expose. For example if the wife was a public figure (celebrity/current athlete), they can freely publish her face. If Shohei didn't expose her identity , they would have to blur her face in public. Shohei chose to release her identity because the Japanese media was going insane and basically putting a bounty on her photograph.

Yankees fan, big Jomboy Media fan, but you guys have covered this like shit. Half way through the discussion, right where Jake said Shohei gambling himself was option number one, I pressed like just to support the channel and stopped listening until you talked about something else. People seem to think Shohei manages his finances the same way we do, checking his bank app everytime he pays at the gas station to not overdraft his account. The guy is a fucking entity, you think Rob from Bank of America has a direct line to Shohei's phone to confirm his recurring netflix payment? No. You know who he may call to confirm something? His secretary/personal assistant. Because I know it may be hard to believe but Ippei's job was not just to help him with mound visits, scouting reports and interviews. His job is to digest information for Ohtani and give it to him. It's not so hard to believe he could divert funds from one of Shohei's possible many accounts where he keeps his investments and has constant traffic in and out. And even if there was anybody questioning it, if we believe the fact the he was the last part of the bottleneck for anything going to Shohei, he could easily just say "yeah, he authorizes it" and that was it. An addict will steal your wallet and help you look for it two minutes later. If you still believe Shohei placing illegal bets is option number one, that's just because it's what you want to believe, because everything surrounding all of this points toward every other direction.

guys, speaking as a half japanese person (my mother is a japanese national), i can totally see shohei having been grossly naive. it's hard to fathom, but believe it or not, most japanese people are culturally still SO honor bound that they do not see or expects the levels of deceit that we Americans see every day. they might expect it from a non-japanese person, but it's entirely possible they would take a japanese person's words at face value. japanese are a very literal people in many respects. for example, sarcasm often goes over a japanese person's head. younger japanese generations are generally better about this as theyre more attuned to western culture. not to say that japanese people are all 100% honest (though i will point out the astonishingly low crime rates in japan, generally, aside from those attributed to yakuza activity) but deceit means dishonor. honor suicide is still a very real thing in japan. that is how culturally honor bound japanese generally are. I of course admit my own bias because ohtani sama is a national and cultural icon but given the clouds surrounding ippei in the fallout of the gambling scandal (to wit, the truths about his fabricated resume at a minimum) i firmly believe that shohei did not know the full extent of what was happening. is he 100% absolved? no. as a japanese-american, i will be more than disappointed if i turn out to be wrong and/or shohei is kicked out of baseball. It will kill the sport.

It's easy if Ippei lied in some form about where/what the money was for. It's easy to believe Shohei was willing to cover Ippei, hence the multiple $500k transfers. If Ippei lied, it could still be theft via deception.

This type of thing happens all the time. Don’t think about it from your position. To a normal person 4.5 million is an ungodly amount of money. Shohei is rich beyond most people’s dreams, 4.5 million to him is not the same as it is to us.

I would say it would be even more strange if Shohei went through all this trouble to gamble through Ippei, just to make the payments directly from an account with his name on it. Ohtani has never managed his own finances, it wouldn’t be that surprising if Ippei tricked him into believing the money was going to him when it wasn’t. Or Ippei actually did somehow wire the funds without authorization from Shohei and just lied to ESPN to cover his ass from prison time.

The problem with Ohtani's Camp's sell is that it doesn't work in EITHER direction: 1. You're selling that Ohtani was just utterly oblivious and shuttered off from everything by a single man, after spending years painting him as a super savvy human who has made the correct call at every avenue or... 2. You're painting Ippei as this monster con man who wasn't smart enough to cover his tracks of DIRECTLY TRANSFERRING 4.5M to a bookie from Shohei's account. BOTH stories from his camp are contradictory within the story itself!!!

This is the answer. Power of Attorney(POA) or check writing privileges 。 Ohtani is completely innocent。 DANIEL KIM said, When I worked as an interpreter, I had to assist the players on just about every aspect of their daily lives. People are saying “an addict would lie about anything exc exc” and I get that but going public saying Ohtani covered his debts wasn’t going to protect him from anything. So why say Ohtani knew? What does he gain from that? And he had to know if he had actually stolen from him that Ohtani would refute it.
@alyw1988
@alyw1988 Месяц назад
The reason you would place these bets with an illegal bookie instead of a legal sports book is to keep them hidden, since MLB players can legally bet an unlimited amount of money on any sport that exists except baseball, this tells me that either the interpreter, Ohtani or both were betting on baseball

There are a lot of lessons in all this. One might be that it was always unfair of us to see Shohei as some sort of saint. Of course this could be an example of him bailing Ippei out. But if it isn't this, then shohei probably has some other unsavory thing that would change our opinion of him. We all do. The man is exceptional at baseball. He seems like a good dude. But now that we're made to question aspects of his life it was always unrealistic to think of him as perfect

@mikayocc We'll see. I just do not believe a guy (Ippei) making $100K per year would be given credit to amass $4.5M in gambling debt. It just doesn't work that way. With that income he would have been cut off at losses of around $20K. Also, I'm not buying that Ippei would have had unfettered access to Ohtani's bank accounts AND that the bank wouldn't have sent an inquiry to Ohtani after NINE $500K wire transfers for a total of $4.5M. Not buying it, and neither is most of the public

@@davelandsman4768 I can understand where you're coming from, and how people would think something fishy is going on. Maybe because I have immigrant Japanese parents I have to translate for for everything from personal medical records (a dr once asked me to ask my Dad if he has erections?) to bank transfers to very highly sensitive info, I can understand how Shohei coming over here at 23 and not knowing a lick of English or having family, his parents, or friends, entrusted Ippei to basically run his life. I was also thinking if the bank contacted Shohei to confirm and ask him questions, it was most likely Ippei who took the call to interpret, the way I would for my parents. It's hard to believe, but if you come from a perspective where you can see it as a possibility because of a language barrier, it's easier to understand/process. I just hope fans give Shohei a fair chance as the police/FBI investigate. Because if he's lying, it will ALL come out.
