If you pay attention, messing with proportions of facial features such as the scale of nose, jaws, distance between eyes is how they make models less attractive compared to a real person models were based on. I actually feel sorry for the artists because they were told to make them like that.
Hate this argument. I preferred Ashley in the remake of 4 and even thought she was more attractive (prettier) and a better character all together. Her wardrobe wasn’t integral to the character. With Maria… it is.
To think we will get this instead of kojima silent hills is depressing. This remake makes silent hill feels like some unknown resident evil clone when in reality it was his biggest competitor and had a very unique style. The shooting in the knee of monsters shows me they dont get the horror of silent hill, which is about surreal/psychological stuff, in contrast with resident evil more grounded in biology enemies. Manequins should just try to regain balance with some unnatural moves, nurses should try to at least simmulate a real woman being shot making you question if these enemies were really monsters or people or anything disturbing like that. For god sake, silent hill 1 original version had small enemies make children noises while stabbing you... Everything about this remake just makes me sad

I think the biggest issue is how the much the artstyle of the Original Game is stripped away , now it looks like one of those awful Unreal Engine 5 concept demos with all those depth of Field effects , Chromatic Abberation etc and it lacks that solid art direction which made the silent look both beautiful and terrifying .
I feel that's been an issue Silent hill has had starting with Homecoming. Silent Hill to Silent Hill: The Room seem to have this gritty stylistic look to them. The grunginess, pure unnatural darkness, and just overall makes you feel both suffocated and openly vulnerable at the same time. Homecoming onward just doesn't seem to strike the same feelings or even remotely close. Their styles felt more, I don't know what to call it, generic realistic horror?
Yup. And the saddest thing is, SH already tried that "TLOU style", years BEFORE TLOU was around. Everybody hated it. But alas, the younger zoom zoom generation eats such feces slop up with a smile, and gets instantly triggered by the "old" gameplay style.
Bloober is nothing but a plagiarism machine. Every one of their games plagiarizes something from somewhere else. It's not them paying homage, it's them outright ripping shit off. Which makes it extra funny how they couldn't just plagiarize SH2 as a whole to do it right.
You can hear it in the voice acting, too. Everyone has that soft, breathy cadence that every single character in every single Playstation exclusive has.
This. She's literally meant to be a WHORE, a super confident sex symbol. But I guess that and all the other character's roles and backstories totally flew over the nu-devs' heads.
She was, but her appearance was not like a super model. I completely agree that this game is compromised, but Sato designed characters with slight flaws, like Maria's baby fat and the loose threads on her shoulders.
I showed the Angela model to my friend. And the only knowledge of Silent Hill she has are my rants and few gameplay videos i've showed her. And she legit replied that Angela looks like a Sims character and she's right.
There is another artistic misdirection that people, at least on subconscious level, will notice. James is an exhausted, anxious, sexually frustrated, guilt split individual. Angela is under major depression, on the verge or suicide, even delusional to an extent. Maria carries a shadow of James' wife, that is also a deeply traumatized individual. They are not like that "since yesterday", their suffering and trauma lasted for years and years. This leaves a mark on your face, on your expressions, on how your eyes look, the totality of your facial features and micro expressions, even at rest when you are not talking. This was very well conveyed in original SH2 textures, look at shadows and eyelids of Maria's face texture, very similar for Angela. Instead of making the game richer in that sense due to new technology, they placed basic models with a default face expression (except for James that kind of looks a bit tired, mostly because the real actor also looks like that). That is why they look like a Sims character.
@@mihajlog9245In almost every instance they seem to have forgotten the visual storytelling from the character designs, but they added super on the nose scenes to make up for it. In the reveal you had James freaking out in the bathroom and crying in front of the noose, and now Angela has added lines saying, "I'll be good, tell him I'll be good".
This new Angela actually sounds a lot like the voice actress that does Bobby on King of the Hill and coincidentally enough looks very similar to her as if they used her as a model
the big problem with the models is that they stand out so much while being around fog. In the old version, the fog was actively in front of the model and it looked more natural. In this version, it looks more like an in-game model being used without fog at all. They don't fit in.
The complaint about Angela's appearance is not that she needs to be sexy, but that every single Western developer who employs DEI consultants ends up with EVERY female character being made less attractive/less feminine/fatter, etc. It's not a 60/40 split, it's more like a 99/1 split toward deliberate ugliness. That visual change is the easiest marker to recognize they've been given power over the final product, and it's dumb to assume that power didn't extend to the writing and story. When James watches Pyramid Head from the closet, he's going to be surprised that Pyramid Head is asking for consent.
Honestly I wished they didn't go with the new camera angle. Not every game has to be a third person over the shoulder style game with QTEs and icons for nearby items. It kind of just makes it feel more generic like alot of other games. The radio mechanic was designed with tank controls and a fixed camera in a dark space in mind and now it seems unnecessary. You didn't need it in RE2 or RE4 remake so why would you need it here? If Bloober actually thinks that a fixed camera is better they should add some optional mode where you can turn on fixed camera angles and tank controls while not making it the default way to play.
Maria's outfit, Angela's face, the "modern audiences" refrain trotted out every time a character undergoes a change that makes them less beautiful or well adjusted, etc. These changes are all symptomatic of a culture incapable of coping with hierarchy. Everything must appeal to the lowest common denominator to ensure we remain in this delusional inversion of reality wherein beauty is subjective and normativity is relative. The deepest existential fear of the "modern audience" is inequality, inherent or otherwise.

For Angela, I think it’s the thick eyebrows, less almondy shaped eyes, and chubby jawline that make her feel like an entirely different character to me.
incidentally angela is the only character that seems alright to me. DIFFERENT but alright, you can already see what she's hiding inside, she seem much more real to me this time. Not that the old angela was bad FAR FROM IT, just that its another take on her here and i kinda dig it. Problem is i don't recognize any of the other characters....
Definitely worrisome. It has a "gummy" look to it, like everything is made out of soft plastic. You can see the springiness of it when James picks up the letter. It somehow has this bouncy-ness to it, like a Disney movie or Overwatch/Blizzard stuff. The behind the character camera and prompts are awful. I'm leaning toward skipping this. The movie has me very worried.

As soon as I saw the Angela and Maria models, I was like, okay, it’s Silent Hill 2 ESG, just like all contemporary AAA titles. And Christophe Gans sucks.
I love silent hill. I really do.. but it’s always so disappointing in some ways more than not that I think they should let the series die. Nobody is ever happy and none of the directors listen. They change too much shit. Hell, Maria doesn’t even have her OG outfit on in the remake and in the film her wig looks like it was bought in party city 😂.. I’m just tired of it being disappointing. Nobody will do it right .. time has shown that.
What is even worse is that she got chubby but not enough to match her fat face. It feel like the body sculptor and face sculptor worked separated and were told "make her fatter" but each one had different standard for "fat"
I never payed any attention to Angela’s appearance she was always an interesting character because of how incredibly unhinged she was right off the bat. It’s practically immediately noticeable in the original that “hey there’s something really off about this lady”. Also when she gives you the knife is such an iconic scene to me. She tells you to take it then freaks out like you’re the one holding a knife to her! So id say my concern is from even just the small amounts we’ve seen the Maria and Angela characters aren’t convincing. For once Mayo you might have more hope than I do.
The change to Maria also bothers me because her colors made her stand out quite loudly amidst the muted colors of the game. It added to what makes her an iconic character. This outfit change is so bad it's ridiculous. They still have time to fix it before launch and not make it DLC or something horrific like that.
I hope you realize a western dev made this remake. It's already an L by proxy alone. Just go back and replay the classic on your console or emulator. If Konami cared about the IP they never would have hired a western dev period.

We should not need to turn off half of the game to make it "tolerable". This is why I will forever defend the classic RE and SH games and their use of SMART cinematic camera-angles: the devs could effortlessly direct the player's focus towards points of interest, and also CULL details away from their point of view, as they saw fit, crafting a truly impressive looking, memorable and atmospheric adventures we've not gotten since.
It's cool that I recently bought the original version as I've never played it before. Definitely is a worthwhile investment compared to paying 60 quid for yet another third person action shooter game such as this remake.

Bro you are tripping here. Game and movie look like absolute shit. Game looks soulless and fails to capture the vibe of the original- it’s obvious bloober doesn’t *get it*- the movie looks like a cheap fan film, has no style or texture- characters look like shitty cosplay. Silent Hill has become an absolute joke tbh- I’m almost embarrassed to have spent almost 25 years obsessing over it. PT was the last hope for the franchise to return back to something respectable and progressive.
A some issues I have with the remake so far: The justification for button prompts on items is a bit redundant, as it takes you away from the experience by reminding you you're playing a video game, and James is shown in the gameplay trailer to adjust his gaze towards grabbable objects. While the adults have melodramatic voices, even before their troubles are clearly revealed, having Laura with an exaggeratedly sullen voice avoids the fact that until late in the game, she's free of sin and/or a justification to commit sin. Although she's shown to dislike James for his surliness towards Mary, she's also shown to warm up to James over their bonds with Mary in the diner: which is betrayed in *that* scene, making her internalize an active hatred towards James and makes her lash out at him. Since I've rambled on about voice acting enough, I'll keep this last bit short. The voices of the adults are clearly the VA's "acting" the characters instead of becoming them, removing a lot of their believability The environments are really impressive, and they capture Silent Hill quite well, the models don't quite have the same fidelity. They seem to have some shine; they look a bit like plastic dolls, particularly in the hair. I almost feel like they were ripped out of Silent Hill Ascension.
I don’t think there will be any changes to Maria’s outfit with progression since the tattoo placement has changed. If they were going to show it off later, why move the butterfly to her chest early on.
What I feel like they should do is when you were close to an item, James would look at it and I feel that would be good to add that as an option for veterans of the old game

For anyone having trouble as to what is off about Angela’s model, lemme put in my 2¢… I just feel like they made her look a little Derpy. Like… attractiveness etc aside, that doesn’t really matter. But making her look “mysterious” and “realistic” are what I believe is lacking in her model/tone. As for Laura, I think its just preferencial at best, but I just hate the “pathos” they give some of her lines. They feel so “hollywood” and introspective now, as opposed to a legitimately naive child running around who hasn’t yet learned how to talk to adults. Just my take as a long-time fan who is excited to see his favorite game remade.

Well, now I'm more excited for a remaster collection of the Silent Hill trilogy on PS4/PS5 than this remake. I hope Konami will do it, like they did for Metal Gear Solid.
Never gonna happen. At least for the foreseeable future. The mgs collection was made because mgs1 was emulated and 2 and 3 were just re-releases of the HD Collection (look at the year in the copyright on the main menu). Silent Hill 1 could be emulated as well, but there is no pre-made HD Collection to repackage (that isn't ass) 2, 3 and 4. AND they lost the source code for SH2 and SH3. So... Yeah.

It tells something about the state of modern, Western AAA industry when the 3rd movie is the most "okay" looking Silent Hill announcement. The de-make of SH2 is literally ALL the worst fears and internet memes come reality, without a hint of irony nor self-awareness. Yet another generic 3rd cinematic person shooter with bland visuals, and literal Sweet Baby Inc 2.0 "consultants" driving the project, including an ex-male self inserting himself as a character.
It is bitter funny how Bloober(or Konami) team can f things up in a unique way, and no this is not based on "nostalgia", but a few ridiculous comments I read, and I have to debunk: 1. *Angela now looks like an actual 19 years old, and in original she looked 40* : Angela is an actual character that suffer from untreated major depression disorder, after years of childhood abuse and rape. People like her don't look their age, even when 19 years old, they would look 20 - 35, so the original encapsulated that well. As for the remake, I didn't know that having a severe bee sting allergic reaction on your face is a true testament of being a 19-year-old. 2. *There are dozens of ways a character can be sexualized, Maria doesn't have to be like in the original at all be sexualized by James* : False, Maria is not a real character, but a projection of James' psyche. In that regard, how she appears, how she talks, moves, even where her tattoo is, provides different interpretation of James' psyche, which is a core element of the story. In general, the exact way the game will sexualize Maria, will determine the interpretation of the core story elements, due to the nature of her pseudo-character. All in all, this isn't edgy gatekeeping of nitpicking, SH 1-3 are games profoundly tailored by nuances and details which contribute to the core story as much as large and obvious element do.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on Maria. Her entire persona is sultry, sexual, flirtatious and provocative. It completely ties into her character and what she represents. This is one of the very few times sexualizing a female character is necessary. Maria’s face in the original always was smirking, with bedroom eyes, very arched eyebrows, the poster child for the confident vixen she portrays. I can completely understand not wanting to sexualize women in a game when it serves no purpose other than to just objectify, but this is not that situation. As for Angela, I respect the emptiness in her demeanor, like a glazed look in the eyes. But the one thing I would’ve changed is to make her appear emaciated and exhausted. I visualized an underweight, heavy dark circles under her eyes, sunken cheeks, boney, cuts on her body and two emotional stages, one being vacant, the other for her traumatic outbursts. She does not stand to gain anything from being beautiful, but I also think the look they chose is a bit one-dimensional on her broken spirit. She almost comes off bored? Not so much traumatized? I can’t quite put my finger on it. There’s also the uncanny valley-ness of some characters due to their heads appearing too large for their bodies, but that can be fixed through mods. Of course these are just my opinions and that’s subject to change with the full release of the game but it does spark some interesting conversation.
When they make changes to please newcommers and causual gamers it will ruin the game to the targeted audience. The hunt for more money and a bigger audience will always hurt a game.

I agree with most of the points being made in this video. Faces look weird, facial expressions look great, over-the-shoulder cam takes away a very important aspect of the original games, and the new movie seems promising save for that James. However, where is the noise filter!
I hate what they did to how the characters look. Especially Angela and Maria. But Angela mostly. It's not about her being less pretty than the original, it's about her not resembling her original self. If the original Angela was ugly, I don't any of us would have had much of a problem. It just it seems that modern developers are hellbent on uglyfying female characters for no good reason. We've seen this happen to many game characters. Also, what I really hated the most is how overt they were with Angela's trauma in the trailer. The original always kept you guessing, and they never showed the extent of what she's been through. The remake is beyond disappointing. And Laura doesn't feel like the same kid anymore.

If you're right about Bloober Team actually wanting to use fixed cameras... perhaps there's a chance they'll include an unlockable fixed camera mode? Or something like that? I won't really bet on it, since designing a game for both camera styles is not particularly simple, but given that they don't seem to be having much development trouble or tight deadlines, I think it could be a possibility. That alone could balance any of my problems with the dialogues, character design, combat, etc...
I really hope Silent Hill 2 Remake is an easy game to make and use mods for because some 3D modelling will be necessary to make me like the new Angela. For example, with Resident Evil 4, we can have the original 2005 models for the characters. Kind of.
It seems to me James's Story is being placed in a new modern timeline instead of him having that old blue car. He could have had his Iconic look. But I will check it out anyway because it looks good.

The acting is terrible imo and I don’t like character designs ether. The gameplay looks good but i dunno, I don’t think this will be as good as the original.
I honestly really like the idea of Maria’s outfit and behaviour changing overtime throughout the game it could add to the uncanniness and be a cool twist on the story while still staying faithful I just hope they to god they don’t screw it up. As for Angela I don’t mind her design at all my only problems are her eyebrows and her cheeks looking puffy other than that she looks decent imo.
I don't have much faith in recreating this game. Companies these days like to avoid topics that are in any way negative or real. They'll just probably only use metaphors instead of being direct.
Why are so many people complaining about the head accessories being silly in a serious game but at the same time accept that there is a dog ending where a dog manipulates the entire narrative of the game. please make up your mind people
Gee maybe because that's a secret ending that was earned after already having experienced the game twice. And not something used to market the game from day one.
@@underthemayo Secret ending or not it's a remake and people should already know that the game has its silly moments/dialogue and if they do happen to have access to these head accessories in a new game they can easily ignore it and not equip it so it doesn't matter whether the silliness is in a first walkthrough or not. You can tell the og developers had fun with the game by putting out the ending meaning they added some light heartedness to the game. Also sh2 isn't the only game to do this Silent hill 1 had the UFO ending and Silent hill 3 had heather with the princess heart skin those were completely out there. The point is that you and others like to point out that it doesn't fit in a serious game like this while they are clearly known for putting things like this. One thing I do agree on is the Maria censorship given the fact that nobody got changed and locking these accessories behind marketing which comes off as a very scummy tactic just like any other game that has done this in the past (separate ways and golden tickets) in the re4 remake but that wasn't the point of my argument it was the fact that people are saying to not add these accessories due to the theme of the game. Not to sound like a smart ass but you have beaten the og and know about all the endings yet you still complain about the accessories being silly so what's the point of it being tolerated behind 2 plus walkthroughs.

the film is being made in canada for tax reasons, and the car might have giving some funds to the production like most brands do now. i enjoy the look of the first film, the second "3D" one was forgettable but i am hopeful for this one. as for the games, i really think it'll be at least decent. i dont care about the changes in terms of appearance of the characters (like who rly gives af) but the combat is something that could really make or break the game. just look at Homecoming.. that said, i probably wont buy on release and just wait for the word from gamers. if its that bad then konami doesnt need the $$$ encouragement. but if its good, then they need to know this is the direction SH needs to be going.
I refuse to believe the character models in the game are finished. From the animations, to the hair, to the faces and the proportions of some of the body parts, everything about them looks unfinished. This is a AAA priced game and it looks like everything was half-assed. I expect nothing but Bloober Team and they somehow always manage to disappoint.
The movie looks so cartoonish to me, Maria looks too goofy w that wig to be taken seriously and pyramid head looks like a toy. That all will take away from the tone of the original game if that's even what they're going for. The game on the other hand, I actually really feel good about. They can still tweak some things for sure but they did the impossible and made Laura bearable. 😂

Getting a bit tired of SH fanboys trying to convince themselves any of these looks good...the game, its been close to 2 years since the first teaser, and it still looks like a fanmade game, cheap, completely missing every single point of the OG...why is this a 3rd person shooter? why do we have a dodge button? why they dont understand the basic character designs and personality of the characters? Angela was never suppoused to look 18, that was the point, Maria was suppoused to look like a hooker (while Maria looks almost angelical), that was the point, and James is suppoused to look and sound friendly and nice because, you know...he is, because he doesnt know he killed his wife, that was the point (this reminds me of Troy Baker's work in the "remaster", who sounded like a punished and tortured soul, now the only thing missing is him carrying a sign saying "I'm sad because I killed my wife") And about the movie, it looks...ok? again, looks fanmade, looks cheap, this is a movie that should've come out in 2008, starring Sean Bean's character, as a loose adaptation of SH2, like the ending of the first movie already set up...also, again, they screwed up James, he is not suppoused to look like a douchebag, because, again, he doesnt know what he did, because, again, that is the point. Also, the make-up, very subtle, maybe he will be carrying the sign I mentioned earlier in the movie... Anyway, more tired of fanboys than Konami at this point, who keep pretending any of this looks fine, including coming up with absurd theories like the one with Maria...
I'm getting tired of the SH fanboy's dismissal of any criticism as "nitpicking" and "haters gonna hate" as if any negative reactions are immediately invalid.
@@balthazor44i mean it really is majorly nitpicking. “Why is the camera angle 3rd person” why is the combat clunky it should be actiony” why is james running” “james would never do x” james is supposed to do why” most of it is shallow. The only valid concern I’ve seen is Angela’s model im assuming that due to the fact she was the last person to work on it
Revealing, suggestive, and carefree. These were important parts of the outfit because it plays into James' psyche. Try understanding the game instead of insulting people with valid concerns over the direction of the remake.
Hey Mayo just thought I'd let you know that Hit Detection are the company that are likely the reason Maria, Angela and the nurses look the way they do in the remake because on their site they have blooper team listed as a partner right now and their goal is to modernise gaming similar to how Sweet Baby Inc does
