The Stunning Forgotten 190 year old Fox Manor House Down South in North Carolina

This historical old house was built by a Quaker family in the early 1800’s. First building a simpler log cabin structure then eventually building the larger house seen today around 1830-1845. The family history is very interesting, as they were a family of quakers. The house stayed in the same family until the early 1930’s when it was auctioned off during the Great Depression and foreclosed on. The house would be bought and lived in until sometime around the 1960’s to 1970’s and has sat empty for the last 50 years. Incredible old historic farm house in rural southern North Carolina crumbling away in the woods. Never had any large updates to the house besides electricity sometime in the 20th century. Still has all the old original beautiful features left, even the original summer kitchen is still behind the house. So glad I could preserve this old house on film. Thanks for watching!
Also happy holidays and happy new year! Last video of 2022! Thank you!!

Great house. The old metal roof is a big part of why this is still standing. The other big part is that the foundation and floorboards are built out of "heart of pine" which is the center section of the pine tree. For the new subscribers, the center of a pine tree contains a lot of pitch (resin) and over time this gets so hard that you cannot drive a nail into it without drilling a pilot hole. Termites and other insects can't penetrate it either. I noticed the ceiling light bulbs at the same time you did, and that there are no light switches or even wall sockets anywhere. I did notice 4 or 5 electric space heaters. The TV in the front hallway is like one we had in the late 1950's or early 1960's, so this would match that got abandoned in the late 1960's or early 1970's. Thanks as always. Merry Christmas.

@Hy-Brasil
@Hy-Brasil Год назад
@@stevew271 a lot of houses even in the 50s and 60s didnt have much in the way of indoor plumbing. my mom was a teenager in the 60s but the family farm house didn't have a bathroom. all the girls would heat water and dump it into a big wash tub out in the barn. they'd take turns keeping watch so each one could get a bath. they had plenty of money to install plumbing, her dad just didn't want to. many man years later when i was a teen we moved into an old house that started off as a shotgun shack. over the years the original owners built additions onto it. each room led into the next one through the closets lol these kinds of houses are sometimes called "Gozintos" because each room "goes into" the next room. the back porch contained the ONE bathroom. and omg was it COLD in winter time! it was added onto the house some time in the 50s or 60s when the porch was built. completely horrible, draughty, and COLD place to live. i always said i wanted to live in a castle until i moved into that house. it was as close as i could get - being in FL the summers were hot and the winters unbearably cold. there were fire places (double sided) but boarded up because they weren't considered safe. parked in front of them were old gas heaters - which were disconnected because they too weren't safe. we had space heaters all over the place. and no, they did NOT heat the room because the ceilings were so flippin high. and when it rained you couldn't hear anything because of the tin roof. and the mold was insane. humid summers and all..... there was no avoiding the damp. it was my least favorite place to live but looking back on it i appreciate the experience because it toughened me up lol i was already not used to having central heat or air. but in previous homes we at least had a window unit. not in this place!!

How cool is that???? So great to see a historical place where thieves haven't stolen the mantels, or vandals haven't ruined it. Or...horrid 70s wood paneling and hideous paint colors. This is truly spectacular, and should be preserved as a museum. Wouldn't want to be the lady of the manor, and try to manage long skirts on that staircase, though! Thanks, Kappy-Merry Christmas to you and Ruby! 🎄🦌🎅

@wendycrawford1792
@wendycrawford1792 Год назад
@@JulianaBlewett It depends. Firstly, you try and track down the owners. Secondly, you determine if the house is beyond repair, and perhaps other architectural elements are missing. The house that was featured had integrity and hadn’t been damaged. All the fireplaces were in tact . It may have been because there is indication that someone is storing items there. The mantels in this very early house were about as basic as you can get and l loved them for their primitive quality. People would be far more likely to tear them out and steal them if they were more ornate.

You can tell that the house was well taken care of by the Quaker family. Which is why it wasn't remodeled over and over. Did you see the front door know as you first entered the house? Beautiful. My imagination ran wild during this walk through. I pictured living there in the mid 1800's. Then I pictured how I would bring this grand old home back to life with as much of the original features as possible. I can dream 😌...

notice the wavy glass in those original panes? There is a lot of gentle dignity left in that abode. Amazing that it hasn't been tormented by human graffiti or molestation, especially amidst so much traffic. It retains it's peace, even as it trembles when the Iron Horse stampedes past. Grace amidst chaos: that may be a lesson learned from that structure. TY for sharing, Kappy. May Comfort and Joy bless you this holiday season. Happy Christmas.

I lived in a house that was next to the train tracks. I remember sitting on my back porch drinking coffee in the morning and noting what was moving. After hurricane Katrina, there were FEMA trailers. I've seen toxic substances, wind turbine blades, cars, stuff trading between Mexico and Canada. I could tell how the economy was doing by the amount of stuff on the train- or lack thereof. I noticed the quiet more than the noise.

Heyy Kappy, now that was a stunning place, man o man. Almost everything was was still on site, I was was as incredulous as you were, but you were there. Story time, my ancestors James and Eliza Gregson had a log cabin that they built on Sullivan Road in Graton, California in1850. This was shortly after panning for Gold starting in 1848, (they arrived in October 1845) and washing the 49'ers clothes in Verba Buena Bay in downtown San Francisco at Kearney and Vallejo Street on Telegraph Hill in a tent. Sometime in the 1860s they added a second floor to the log cabin and added a facade exactly like the one in this video. Kappy your mind is a treasure trove of architectural knowledge, and now I now the style of my ancestors home in Sonoma County, California. When James died in 1899, the siblings went to war with one another and the house was burned to the ground out of spite. Kappy, another gem of a video was just added to your collection. Thank you so much Kappy, you made my week!!!

The people who built this house would have been of average income. He/she built it to last with only the necessities. It is really awesome to see the huge beam under the house. The vacuum in the house, I don't know what brand it is, but I have a replica of that same one in miniature. I inherited it from our 100 year old grandad. I read up on it, and what I found said that the one I have would have been a "salesman's demo". They would carry it to show people what it looked like only in miniature. That particular one was very heavy and carrying it wasn't practical. Thanks for another great video young man! And thanks for taking me along!

Sound home, good "bones". Heart pine kept termites at bay and the roof saved the rest. This is the same style and condition of one I renovated with family. Learned skills are more important than all the money without them when renovating. I'm from the same general part of NC and happy to see this in such condition, not truly abandoned due to no undergrowth or vines growing in missing windowpane etc. I was disappointed seeing a comment that taking mantels isn't stealing, it's very much a problem and hope that person turned others to think it's open season. It's also rare to find the unattached kitchen, as most burned which in our area was the predominant reason for using them. Heart pine has incredible lasting durability, but highly flammable and a source of many home fires in the old days, leading to a surge in building and using them, often converting any previous kitchen to usable room. It looks like that space has been used for storage in the not too distant past. Great find.

I had to view this again.. it really is amazing it hasn’t been vandalized or updated thru the years; that loud train might have been a deterrent when the thoughts of “ updates” came. I did once live in a ranch that was near a train switching yard, very loud but over time you got used to it . And after I moved from there I realized how I missed the clickity clack of the train cars kind of rocking me to sleep lol. If I had money I’d love to preserve that cool old places! It was obviously built so well!! I was also wondering where the privy was located.. I also had some thoughts about that second building, it seems the kitchen was on the side (or back ) of the house, as it wasn’t open to the main house.. maybe it was the winter kitchen. I found it interesting there were two entrances on the separate “ summer kitchen”; that fire place was certainly large enough for cooking in the olden times.. I wonder too though,if it was a bunk house or slaves quarters .. altho it seemed close enough to the main house , for it to be a living quarters. On another thought, as I see these old dwellings in the south.. I still just cringe at the whole thought of slavery & all that it entailed.

I grew up in downtown Cary NC in the 70’s. We used to love exploring old abandoned houses as kids. I’m in my 50’s now and this reminds me of the good ole days. Now , I’d love to use my metal detector to explore the yards and detect under the big old trees on property like this. Brings back memories. Very cool. I subbed to ya.

Love the setting of the buildings and how there laid out. Being the Christmas Season I can only imagine how many happy memories were spent around the fireplace, the holiday decorations and the laughter of small children in the home. Thanks Kappy for another beautiful upload. Merry Christmas my friend to you and your family .....God Bless. Stay warm safe and spread the love to others.❤🎄🦌🎅✝🙏

@@urbanexploringwithkappy1773 Hi Kappy...The left 'parlor' was the formal room for visitors as you can see with the fancier scoting and mantle. So I would guess the Christmas tree would have been in that one. The 'parlor' on the right was more for the family gatherings i.e. library, music, some old farm houses in my state had 'smoking rooms' for the gents. The history of these old places makes us appreciate how life was in those days. I've been studying and reading about it for many years. Even before internet.

Rare to find a home with no major modern updates such as plumbing and electrical outlets and switches…. Wow, what a true gem! And the fireplaces haven’t been converted to the modern wood stove inserts - this is a very rare find! Love this! Wonder if you found an outhouse or old water pump outside since no indoor plumbing

That was a gorgeous old house and summer kitchen. Of all the old houses you have explored, have you considered doing a video of your top 10 favorites? I imagine that’s difficult yo choose. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas and safe travels!

What a treasure you uploaded today! Close to a somewhat busy road and extremely minimal if any vandalism and no harvesting of all that wonderful woodwork. What great detail inside and out. Thank you for another great explore. Now I will just sit back and see what strange replies I get to my post.

This reminds me of my grandfather's house, not a two story, but the same 1 light bulb in the middle of the room and that's the extent of the electricity, but that's the way it was back in the day. No indoor plumbing, they drew their water from a well and used an outhouse. it was that way until the house was dismantled in the late 1980's. My grandfather lived in that house until just a few years before he died in1982, and my mother and her siblings lived in that house until they grew to adulthood and left. It just was the way it was. Most Americans aren't aware of this.
