Re-Upload Had to make a couple of changes to this as YT decided (months after release) that the original episode needed to be age-restricted
Minnie Freeman-Lee lived in a once lavish mansion though, by the time of her murder it had long since seen it's best years. After the death of her son and husband Minnie became more and more reclusive as the mansion decayed and it's gardens became over grown. To that end, when George Russell offered his gardening services Minnie accepted. This may have been her biggest mistake.

02:15 - Minnie's body is discovered
03:20 - The Investigation Begins
05:00 - George Russell is Arrested

Paying your bills only on the final reminder was actually considered to be the proper thing to do among the upper middle classes until around the 1950s. As one household management book from 1910 put it "never pay a tradesman until you absolutely must or he will think you are not good for credit."

The fact that George Russsel had a record of numerous petty crimes might close the book for some, but the mysterious changes to the time of death, the doctored inventory and the propensity of police and prosecutors to "solve" the crime as we so often witness now makes the conviction sketchy at best.

How sad for her. At her end she had no husband, no family, no friends and no one to even say one nice thing about her, then she was murdered. My goodness, that would be awful. Terrible fate. 😔

I have already listened to two of your compilations and yes, I would like to hear more of those, as requested by you. I find it amazing, that even centuries ago, perpetrators are sometimes quickly found in an era without mobile phones, social media, et al. Now that is real policing. Looking forward to hearing your library of cases and of those to come. Thank you so much.

After all, do you want to be responsible for an Innocent person going to jail, or the gallows in this case, because it was 'suggested they did it?' Or if you are the one on trial, would you be happy that jurors had convicted you because you 'looked like' you may have done it? There is No Evidence in this case that should have resulted in George being hanged. Simple fact. Suppose the guy said too much to the cab driver who then beat him to the crime. As for timing and the alibi I'm not sure the ME was confident of the TOD in his initial report. The scarf could have been planted because the law had so much circumstantial evidence and they could have been protecting someone. Times were different. So much to wonder.

Keith Simpson aspired to be Sir Bernard Spilsbury -- who would have been a hard act to follow. This "chop and change" of the time of death sort of DEVALUES the worth of the autopsy -- if time of death can be so easily changed to suit the police case. The man may or may not have been guilty, but on the meagre "evidence" presented by the police, he should never have been HUNG.....even if he'd been guilty.

For me it's the finger print. If the police can conclusively show that the print was George's then that without a doubt places him at the scene of the crime and that needs explaining. But if there is doubt over the fingerprint then he shouldn't have been convicted. The 'time of death' wasn't then an exact science and in the most genuine cases I heard of ToD vary greatly, and can change during the investigation due to two different pathologists. The blue scarf was never identified conclusively. Even if these piece are genuine and not a stitch up, they shouldn't be able to convict someone as their is too much reasonble doubt with them. But, the fingerprint. In all honesty, whether George did it or not, the authorities saw a chance to get this anti-social character off the streets once and for all and took it. If I can resolve the issue of the fingerprint I can, in my mind, resolve the case.
@tmlawson751
@tmlawson751 Год назад
It was a tentative match to begin with. At that point, the technology was cutting edge and new for criminology. That said, it seems like he did it --- based on the narrative the police provided, but who is to say with that kind of doubt? It could be argued that the late addition of the scarf was due to a fumble at the desk typing the report up, or an almost forgotten addition that had to be edited in. Likewise, with the time of death, again, the doctor may have been mistaken, or taken into account that the perpetrator wouldn't have just stuck around if a woman was slowly suffocating --- he could have established an alibi, especially with the notion that she wouldn't be checked up on, anytime soon. The milk delivery may have damned him. The lady sounded like a nervous mess --- unable to cope with the world outside her door, except for a single delivery. I wonder how he was able to get into her home, without being noticed or making an obvious mess with wood/glass shards. The blue scarf was never explained by him, either, or at least, his defense wasn't recorded. For all we know, everything was fabricated --- except for the guy's established criminal record. In a home with so much stuff, and presumably a lot of time, why was this the only thing taken? Or was everything worth something hocked before this ... or did this lady just not have much of anything (cash, jewelry, etc). To me, if he still had some jewelry, or was reported to have spent a lot at the pub recently, that would have clinched it. As it stands, too many questions to be sure if it was him.
@hogwashmcturnip8930
@hogwashmcturnip8930 Год назад
It'sactually quite simple.If he was working there, and the house was as dirty and dusty as they said, it is quite possible that he had entered the house at some point and it had been there for ages. The key issue is Where it was found, and that was never addressed.

A throwaway remark that he made that could have just as easily Proved his innocence if taken another way. I hope you are never on a jury, but I Do hope you face one as blinkered as you!

I believed the case was engineered. Wouldn't he have known the Police had his fingerprints ? Wouldn't he have worn gloves? He was an unrepentant criminal with multiple convictions but murder wasn't one of them.

Russell did it. Fingerprint evidence put him on the spot, he had no alibi and he incriminated himself

That or he was framed by someone working for the cops. But I do lean towards he did it.

Totally circumstantial. If he was working at the house and it was not cleaned that fingerprint could have been there for ages. Secondly he Did have an alibi, until the coroner changed the time of death. As for his comments about her wealth or lack of it, she was a lonely old lady with no one in the world. What is to say she did not talk to him, as he went about his work? Even the scarf is circumstantial. He had a blue silk scarf. The victim May have owned a blue silk scarf at some point in her past. No evidence that they were one and the same, other than an unreliable witness who said they looked similar. This should have been laughed out of court, instead a man died for it. He May have killed Minnie, but on this evidence there was no way he should have been convicted.
@andrewwarmington
@andrewwarmington Год назад
@@hogwashmcturnip8930 Mostly circumstantial but circumstantial evidence IS evidence and the evidence of the fingerprint is compelling. It was found in the depths of the house, which Russell said he had never been in - he had wiped his prints off everything else but missed this. Of course the scarf is not very strong evidence but he was not and would not have been convicted on the strength of it. The rest of the evidence was more than enough to convict him.

@@susanfaulkner2304 The way I used to hear it was that a fortune teller told someone his dad would die on such a date. His father lived long after the predicted day but sure to form the milkman croaked it to the very hour.

I tried to find out how she lost her husband and sons, but couldn't. I thought maybe all in the great War so very, close in time. Going from gay, surrounded by people to alone, paranoid is very sad. am sorry she could not trust, or at least enjoy, that one old friend. Yea, guilty. Bobbies will frame you, but this is a kind of decent circumstantial case and really his life was headed in this direction. If he had not tortured her, I would feel a little sorry for him as well. One cop at the scene first was a lady officer. Good on you, U.K.!

You said it yourself Circumstantial. There is Not One Shred of Evidence that should have led to a man being hanged. This is not a Lynch mob, this should be a properly carried out trial. And it was nowhere near.

Well based on the facts he did see Minnie and think the police didn't have solid evidence even though they new he did it manufactured evidence to suit their needs. It doesn't mean he wasn't guilty. Sad thing is their is a slight chance they could have been wrong. I would hated to be on that jury It is sad in those times she had no friends and died lonely no matter how hateful she was.
@hogwashmcturnip8930

Nor does it prove he wasn't innocent. There is a thing called 'Element of Doubt' If you are on a jury, if you have a single element of doubt about the evidence you have been presented with, or the accused's guilt, you Must find Not Guilty. This case is so full of holes the Owl and the Pussycat could set sail in it. Just thinking 'he probably did it' is not good enough. In those days that was a man's life in your hands, and if you wrongly convict that makes you as much guilty of murder as the perpetrator of the original crime.
